Established in 1750 at Abercorn and Oglethorpe Streets, Colonial Park Cemetery, used as a burial ground for Christ Church Parish. holds many victims of the Savannah Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1820. Since 1853, when burials stopped, many tombstones have been damaged either by vandals or time without the hopes of restoration since no one alive is able to contribute information. In 1913, the Daughters of the American Revolution erected the iron entrance way. Spanish Moss adds to the somber vibe that is felt while walking through this cemetery.

This is an older photo from February, but it was the first Mardi Gras I got to celebrate in New Orleans. It was probably the best party I've been to in my life, hands down. I was amazed at how laid back people were for how crowded it was. I hope I can get there again before I'm too old to have enough energy to party. :)

Just when I thought Savannah couldn't be anymore beautiful, I was amazed by the driveway that was lined with more than four hundred oak trees in Wormsloe, a colonial estate near downtown Savannah. This colonial estate from 1736, belonged to Noble Jones, one of the original 114 English colonists that arrived in Georgia in 1733. It is the walls of his home, constructed from 1737-1745, that is considered to be the oldest standing structures in the Savannah area. The property overlooks Jones' Narrows, which was the main waterway for ships that were traveling through the area during the 1700's. It has since clogged with silt making it impossible for travel.

Historically it has been one of the most important channels for the commerce of the region, providing a passage for marine traffic between Upper New York Bay and the industrial towns of northeastern New Jersey.

December 31st is an important day in Cuba. Families get together to prepare for the next big day, “Triumph of the Revolution” National Day, and they cook pork: “cerdo asado.” Most Cubans take on all preparations themselves. First, they take out the intestines and sew the belly back; then, above a slow-cooking fire, they spin the pork for four to five hours. “Santiagueros,” people living in Santiago de Cuba, are known to cook their pork publicly, in the street. On December 31st, we visited the outskirts of Santiago in the Mariana de la Torre neighborhood. At Gabriel’s house (last 2 photos), just as the pork was almost ready, Gabriel tore off one of the legs and handed it to me. That’s when I put the camera away. Delicious.

The Court House was completed in the beaux-arts or "Modern Renaissance" style courthouse for $3.3 million. Similar to Italian Renaissance palaces, the exterior of the courthouse is noted for its granite walls, bronze window frames and doors, Corinthian columns, and low flat copper dome with the torch of victory

The free-standing canopy of four columns and arches above the altar in the sanctuary of the Upper Church. The term comes from the Spanish baldaquin or the Italian baldacco, which refers to the lavish brocaded material imported from Baghdad and hung as a canopy over an altar or doorway. The term also applies to the canopy used in Eucharistic processions and to that which covers the episcopal throne or cathedra. The most famous of baldachins is that of Bernini (1598-1680) in the Basilica of St. Peter.

Exchange Place Center was the tallest building constructed in Jersey City in the 1980s. It is east of Hudson Street and on the north side of Exchange Place with a view of Hudson River.

While most residents of Jersey City were born in the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital I was actually born in this building. Why I don't know.

The Ford Mansion, atop a beautiful hilltop in Morristown was the site of the hard winter(December 1779 – May 1780) quarters of George Washington and the Continental Army. That winter remains the coldest on record for New Jersey.

"Named after General Casmir Pulaski, the Polish hero who was mortally wounded at the Siege of Savannah 1779. Begun in 1829 and completed in 1847, the fort was constructed principally under Lt. J.F.K Mansfield. There Robert E. Lee saw his first service after his graduation from West Point.

Fort Pulaski was never garrisoned until its seizure by Georgia troops in 1861 to prevent occupation by Federal forces. On April 10, 1862, Federal batteries on Tybee Island commenced the bombardment of Fort Pulaski. After 30 hours of bombardment as a result of which the walls were breached and its guns disabled. Col H. Olmstead surrendered the Fort. The bombardment marked the first effective use of rifled cannon against a masonry fortification and constituted an epoch in military history.

Abandoned by 1885, Fort Pulaski became a national monument in 1924 and placed under the national park service in 1933."

The St. John's Chapel, to the left of the High Altar. This chapel displays a rotating collection of more than 100 U.S.-themed kneelers, embroidered by volunteers. A Harriet Tubman kneeler shows a train and shackled black hands, a reference to her underground railroad that guided slaves to freedom. An Alexander Graham Bell kneeler has a telephone. Others honored include Albert Einstein, Samuel Clemens and Susan B. Anthony.

This gorgeous park that has the Black River as it's centerpiece and is stunning in the fall. The Black River is flanked by massive boulders. These boulders create many waterfalls that can be seen from the trail. At the end of the trail the river lets out into a pond where people can swim. The park is known for its hiking and scenery, especially in the fall when the leaves begin to change colors.

I remember a tine when Jersey City had no skyline. Today the waterfront is impressive. If the price of gasoline keeps going up more and more people will be moving back to cities like Jersey City.

Jockey Hollow is part of Morristown National Historical Park in New Jersey. Jockey Hollow contains legendary war sites, and Revolutionary-era homes, was chosen by George Washington as a location for an encampment during the winter of 1779-1780. It was used as an encampment by the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. It was here where the army suffered the long hard winter often attributed to Valley Forge.
