The free-standing canopy of four columns and arches above the altar in the sanctuary of the Upper Church. The term comes from the Spanish baldaquin or the Italian baldacco, which refers to the lavish brocaded material imported from Baghdad and hung as a canopy over an altar or doorway. The term also applies to the canopy used in Eucharistic processions and to that which covers the episcopal throne or cathedra. The most famous of baldachins is that of Bernini (1598-1680) in the Basilica of St. Peter.
Behind the altar is a copy of a famous window in Chartres Cathedral in France. To its right is a reproduction in stained glass of the ancient icon "Salus Populi Romani" (Salvation of the Roman People). The treasured original hangs in St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome, and this reproduction required the special permission of Pope Pius XII. Continuing to the right are windows portraying the proclamation of Mary's Assumption by Pope Pius XII in 1950; Our Lady Queen of Peace; and the Visitation by Mary to her cousin St. Elizabeth, both expectant mothers.
