Mating hoverflies syrphus ribesii. The male's eyes join up, whilst hers are widely separated. Useful garden insects as they feed on aphids. These two obligingly posed whilst I tried out my new (second hand) macro lens in the Wildlife Cafe this morning.

PS can you see who's hiding...?

This image is born out of just one of our recent domestic crises - others have happened since and are still unresolved. So I'm so sorry if I'm not keeping up these days. Jeff, of Jeff's Useful Shop in Walmley, told me where to find this beautiful wood. And this is what I found...

Sorry to overload you with bluebells ... just one bluebell wood please, before they're over :o)

My first attempt with Topaz and PhotoShop - hope you like it. Thank you for stocking everything useful Jeff - and to you, Tony (Guy@Fawkes) for your tuition in Photoshop - still a long long way to go....

At one stage it looked promising for a great sunset, there was plenty of broken, high cloud.

The first problem was finding anything useful as foreground and then it didn't really matter as the sun dropped behind a bank of thick cloud hanging over the Western Isles.

This shot captures the sun as it was about to disappear behind the cloud with some colour overhead.

A broken drying rack near Reine, used to dry fish; you see them all over the islands. Very useful for compositional purposes :)

A lighthouse, small but useful for finding your way in bad weather

Heading down the road towards Richmond Virginia we Had to turn around to see this bug up close! The amount of creativity in this world is astounding! I wish we could have seen it after dark as it's covered in little lights. :)

We had a wonderful day all together where Anita got yelled at, we accidentally found the best restaurant offering vegetarian fair all within steps of a great parking spot. (if you know downtown cities you know how hard a parking spot is to find!) and we visited a fantastic chocolate candies store! There was also a small lake (or large pond) involved in the day's adventuring.

Looks like another beautiful day weather wise so I should probably go outside and do something useful! Have a blessed day everyone!

Wild - at Paracas, Ica - Peru - early morning.

Breeding in saline lakes throughout the southern Andes and the lowlands of Argentina, the Chilean is the most common of the three strictly South American species of flamingo. Where all three co-occur in the altiplano of Peru, Bolivia and Chile, the Chilean Flamingo is best separated from other species by its blue grey legs with bright pink "knees," and by the pink base to its bill. Another potentially useful clue is its faster foraging rate, typically walking while feeding almost twice as fast as the other two species. This more rapid pace stirs the water sufficiently so that small groups of Wilson’s Phalaropes (Phalaropus tricolor) will cluster around their feet and feed on the prey that is churned up. Do not know what this old and forgotten place was used for but it now sits abandoned along interstate 80 in Nevada, suspect it was maybe used in mining.

Pharmacological research has shown that the essential oils and extracts from D. viscosa (yellow fleabane) possess a variety of biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, and antioxidant properties.

Even though they are useful and meaningful, we must be careful not to overemphasize those little traditions to the point that we make them indispensable and elevate them to the position of divine, unchanging, eternal truth. They should not become the focus of our activity and attention to the point that they replace our relationship with Christ Himself. They should not be reduced to superstition, nor be observed in a ritualistic or legalistic manner, but should be practiced as an expression of our faith and of true Orthodoxy. While we embrace, respect, and esteem Tradition, we must be careful not to lapse into a rigid observance of customs, which is traditionalism.

Situated in the north part of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Falls of Falloch is a beautiful waterfall with a popular beauty spot for picnic.

The falls boasts a prime location just over three miles from the village of Crianlarich which makes the site a useful stopping point or brief leg-stretcher if travelling on the A82. Standing at 30 ft high and with the River Falloch passing through Glen Falloch as it makes its way towards Loch Lomond at Ardlui, Falls of Falloch is a truly entrancing site set in a peaceful glen.

The image shows a typical house in Alberobello, a town in Italy famous for its trulli. Trulli are traditional limestone buildings with conical roofs. The facade of the house is painted white and features a wooden door with a window on either side, both protected by metal grilles.

The roof of the house is made of stone and has a characteristic conical shape, with tiles stacked in concentric circles. The house is decorated with potted plants, including vibrant red and pink flowers. Vines with red flowers climb up the facade, adding a splash of color to the white walls.

The architecture and decorative elements highlight the picturesque and traditional style of this region of Puglia, Italy.

Trulli were constructed in this distinctive manner for practical and historical reasons. The dry-stone construction method, without the use of mortar, allowed them to be dismantled quickly. This was particularly useful in the past to avoid taxes imposed by the local lords, as dismantling the buildings made them less taxable. The conical roofs are not only aesthetically unique but also provide excellent insulation, keeping the interiors cool in the hot Mediterranean climate and warm during the winter. This architectural style dates back to the 14th century and reflects the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local people.

Another photo of that hedgehog I saw in broad daylight in my garden. It was walking around, sniffing here and there under leaves, looking for food. They are insect eaters and quite useful to have in your garden. It seems it's a good idea not to clear away all dead leaves and twigs, but to leave some in your garden as a possible place for them to sleep.

After removing the outer, paper-like skin from these soup shells, the strengthening ribs have been revealed. These of course add nothing to the flavour of the soup itself, but rather, they help to keep the constituent particles and fluids safe as they complete their migratory travels.

Once liberated from the metal fortress, the soup is surprisingly soft, with viscosity varying according to species. Flavours are extremely varied also, ranging from delicious to disgustingly inedible.

As a bonus, the lightness and strength of the discarded shells makes them useful for all sorts of technical projects, with the two shown here being prepared for use in an experimental solar heating system for a greenhouse.

No one really knows where soup comes from and the internet is full of misinformation on the subject. But, thanks to painstaking new research from universities on several continents, it now seems highly likely that this universal delicacy really is the product of the (once thought to be) mythical Soup Dragon.

Remember though, this new hypothesis should be taken with a pinch of salt.

HGGT!! RESIST!! IMPEACH!!!

one of the views from Rachel's Knoll, Sedona, arizona

After Rachel's death in 2001, the property that the Knoll sits on was sold to Seven Canyons, but with provisions to allow visitors to the site on an ongoing basis. Originally the buyers did not follow through on these provisions, but because of diligent work by Rachel's children and their lawyer, the courts have now declared that Seven Canyons must comply

Imagine the pristine beauty due west of Sedona with nothing but magnificent red rock formations in all directions. For many years, residents of Sedona were allowed to use a very special place in this extraordinary area. It was found on private property in the Long Canyon area and was owned by a woman named Rachel. She purchased this beautiful land, piece by piece, in the early 1970s and then made it available to the residents of Sedona, and all people from around the world.

Her property was perched high above the Long Canyon valley on a knoll which was later to be known as Rachel’s Knoll. To access her property one had to walk about half a mile meandering up a dirt road allowing ample time to experience and honor the drama and magical beauty of the land. Once on the knoll, one would find medicine wheels, seating areas, trails to guide you around to the meditative areas plus one of the most extraordinary red rock views in Sedona.

This land was most sacred to the Native Americans in the area and was used by them for centuries for their ceremonies and inspiration. Rachel knew when she entered this sacred place that it would be her goal to save it for all people so they might enjoy and honor the Native Americans who once lived there.

In some cases it can be useful to have an all-round walk around lens. Especially at times when you don't want to lug around all your equipment. That's why I bought a 24-105 lens. This is the first test.

Citroën 2CV is an air-cooled front-engine, front-wheel-drive economy car.

A characterful, ancient Citroen that has become legend, was produced between 1948 and 1990 (yes, that really is 42 years of production), the 2CV (deux-cheveaux or ‘two horses’) was originally conceived in the late Thirties as a rugged, useful, affordable car. Famously, it was designed with very specific requirements, including being able to carry four people and 50kg of goods at 30mph, across muddy and unpaved roads if necessary. so the farmers loved it! The eggs did not crack! :)

Very useful plants in costal regions. Their dense foliage provides excellent erosion control, shelter and nesting sites for various birds and animals, the rose hips are a food source for birds and other wildlife. It seems that beach roses play a vital role in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems.

And they are very decorative, I think.

Coast of Thy National Park, Danish North Sea coast.

The koru (Māori for '"loop or coil"') is a spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond.

The silver fern has been accepted as a symbol of New Zealand’s national identity since the 1880s. To Māori, the elegant shape of the fronds stood for strength, stubborn resistance, and enduring power. To Pākehā (New Zealanders of non-Māori descent), the fern symbolised their sense of attachment to their homeland.

The Koru is also the logo of our national carrier.

It has been worn by our national rugby and all sports teams since 1888, and its associations with the military are almost as long. First used by New Zealand troops fighting in South Africa (1898-1902), the fern symbol continued to be used to identify New Zealand units during both world wars and subsequent conflicts. The symbol’s greatest emotional impact of course comes from its use to adorn the headstones of our war dead.

Although they are called ‘silver ferns’, the undersides of the fronds are usually white; only in some northern populations are they actually 'silver'. The undersides reflect moonlight, making them useful aids to navigating bush pathways at night.

Geomagnetic activity pushed the Northern Lights down to where they were visible from Co. Mayo, Ireland on the 2nd of October 2013. That small little annoying gap, in my hedge, that refuses to grow comes in useful at times like this.

Featuring some new unique, beautiful, and very useful items from Cinoe, Hive, and Vespertine.

From Cinoe the Teruteru-bozu doll. Includes a decor version and puppet version. A teru teru bōzu is a small traditional handmade doll made of white paper or cloth that Japanese farmers began hanging outside of their window by a string in hopes for good weather the following day and no rain! In shape and construction they are essentially identical to ghost dolls, such as those made at Halloween.

MM junk drawer

We actually have two junk drawers - one for tools and nails sorts of stuff and another for kitchen/office sorts of things like cards, candles and corks. This item could reside in either drawer! But more likely it’s hanging out on the counter or headed into the wastepaper basket because they are a pet peeve - yes, even if it’s blue!!

Size verification will be in the first comment box in a bit. The blue plastic item is about 2.6cms

Cool!! 😎 Your junque drawer contains useful and semi-interesting things! Thanks for sharing! ….. 💙 HMM 💙

We had one night on our road trip this year when the sky was clear, the moon wasn't up and we found a whale-watching lookout away from town lights that at night was pitch black. So having got the (near) perfect conditions all I had to do was take a decent shot. This didnt turn out to be as as easy as I'd thought! However, I did manage to get one or two acceptable ones.

I read somewhere that it's useful to use a high ISO for such shots - certainly seemed to work for me and only really achievable because of my new 80D camera!

It was such a beautiful day yesterday, I was in a t-shirt all day till late afternoon. I even saw a Small Heath butterfly , ridiculously late in the year. I have to wait in today as I have a. drone arriving, so I'll probably start another painting. I 'm not a fan of drones but it'll be really useful for recording our habitat management for the High Brown Fritillary. It was so warm it felt a bit like Summer in Siam by The Pogues.

Dunoon, Puck's Glen, the start for our walk or the end for others.....

The Glen is about a mile long with walkways and bridges, but very dark and I needed a tripod with each shot..

Located about 2 or 3 miles north of Dunoon... very useful wee coffee "horsebox" at Benmore Gardens another few miles on...
