The new Nikon D810 rocks for sports photography! New Instagram!
Nikon D810 Photos Pro Women's Surfing Sports Photography Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD !
I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracells took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 24mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in Lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

Nikon D810 Photos Pro Women's Surfing Van's US Open Sports Photography Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD !

This was the finale at the end of a performance by a Juggler from Cirque du soleil. The lovely young lady joins him on stage after he "falters" at the end of the performance. It's a very sweet moment.

The new Nikon D810 rocks for sports photography! New Instagram!
Nikon D810 Photos Pro Women's Surfing Sports Photography Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD !
I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracells took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 24mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in Lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!

Heading home after some work on my vehicle, I took Concession 5 in Niagara-on-the Lake (NOTL) toward the Niagara Escarpment. Near the base of the escarpment stands a slowly-deteriorating bright red barn with a slightly odd cyan door on one end. I have photographed this barn a few times over the years and felt like doing it again since the opportunity was right there. Grabbing the camera gear and some protection against the fine rain that was falling, I found a spot to set up and get this composition. Although the fine rain was of the kind that slowly, yet steadily, soaks everything, it had the advantage that the wet paints on the barn really popped. - JW

Tech Details:
Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an Tamron 100-400mm 1:4.5-6.3 DI VC USD lense set to 240mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority Mode, f/9.0, 1/20 sec with an EV-0.67 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source GIMP from Nikon SOOC JPEG source file: scale image to 9000 px wide, use the Curves tool to slightly brighten the image mainly at the brightest end of the curve by pulling the White Point to the left, adjust the Contrast/Brightness by sightly increasing contrast and reducing brightness, use the Hue-Saturation-Brightness tool to decrease the brightness as well as the saturation of the red channel and then on the cyan channel reduce its brightness and also increase its saturation, all the adjustments were slight, add a non-destructive adjustment layer and use it to darken the grass a little, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on bottom, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen, save.

The new Nikon D810 rocks for sports photography! New Instagram!
Nikon D810 Photos Pro Women's Surfing Sports Photography Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD !
I shot in DX mode which crops away the extra pixels and takes me 1.5X closer while allowing for up to 7 FPS with the Nikon D810's Nikon MB-D12 Battery Grip using the 8 AA battery option! 8 Duracells took me through around 3,000 shots no problem--maybe more! I was shooting at the equivalent of 900mm with the 1.5x crop factor! Pretty close! Had I gone with the Nikon D4s, I would have gotten 12 fps, but no DX crop factor, as the sensor has only around 24mp, compared to the d810's 36 megapixels! Sure the larger pixel size on the Nikon D4s full frame sensor comes in handy indoors or at night, but in the bright sun, there's more than enough light for the smaller pixels in crop mode! Sure we lose some pixels from the outer edges when shooting in DX crop mode, but most of those pixels would be cropped away in Lightroom anyway. And the smaller files make the memory cards last longer, while also upping the FPS to 7 shots per second! Not quite 12 FPS, but still awesome and enough I felt!
