AN ELEGANT AND UNMISTAKABLE pure white, heron-like bird with a black, dagger-like bill and a long neck. A local bay called Grenham , not that well known for birding, thought that I may see some Brent Geese with no luck, just about to leave with head hung low in disappointment, when a local man said there was a Little Egret in the opposite direction to what I was looking at, so ran the quarter-mile or so, in sub Usain Bolt time, in time to fire of a few images from the promenade and in full view, working the rock pools, before it took flight away. Job done a big grin restored. and the fifth of November shall be remembered.

STAY SAFE friends, enjoy the weekend the best you can..

100 meter sprint... 'lamb style'

You don't naturally think of the Grebes as the most dynamic of birds., but when this one noticed an unwanted male suitor with half an eye on his girlfriend., suddenly is was Usain Bolt 'eat your heart out'!

0 to top speed in a matter of seconds it made for some unexpected photographic action

The intruder was successfully evicted and a reminder these guys can fight as well!

My name is Bolt, Lightning Bolt.

Usain Bolt

I can run at speeds of 60 cm per second but some of my cousins can run at speeds of 9 km/h (5.6 mph), which, relative to its body length, is about 22 times the speed of an Olympic sprinter, the equivalent of a human running at 480 miles per hour ; )

One year ago I was on holiday in Nippon. These are some photo's of exactly one year ago.

They held the Tokyo Motorshow from October 24th - November 4th 2019 with motto: Open Future. It was divided over two locations: the Ariake exhibition (@Tokyo BigSight) and Aomi exhibition (@Tokyo Teleport). They were 1,2km apart and there was a shuttle or you could take the metro or walk between the sites on the "Open Road" where they lined up all kind of interesting cars like this replica of Usain Bolt's gold Nissan GT-R. He was gifted one by Nissan because he is the fastest man alive.

You know they are out there., but getting to actually see one isn't so easy! This one was doing his Usain Bolt impression next to a lake in Rutland., literally gone in 30 seconds! Lovey to see but forget all the 'compose the photograph' stuff., this was swing the lens and click or you miss it!

I don’t usually pay much attention to our nearest beach. Just three miles from home along a narrow winding downhill road past the local pasty emporium (seven out of ten for the flaky steak variety), Porthtowan has always been a bit of a curate’s egg to me. It’s as good as any of them for surfing, although high tide can be a bit of an adventure, and the Blue Bar with its bay windows offering expansive sea views is a popular haunt in these parts, but I’ve never really got my head around how to smuggle a decent photograph home from here. The only pictures I’ve ever taken worth sharing are of surfers in action, using the wonderful 70-200mm lens that’s faster than Usain Bolt in a hurry for the bus. Maybe that’s still the case – you can decide that for yourself. But when there’s Portreath just a couple of miles further down the coast, and then my favourite playground at Godrevy another ten minutes’ drive away from there, it always seems so easy to end up heading west instead. Unless of course I’m going the other way towards Holywell Bay. The common factor among those favoured beaches is that you can look out to sea and there will be an obvious focal point to settle the camera on. It’s the same when I head down towards the infinite pleasures around Land’s End. Perhaps it’s a lack of imagination on my part, but I do like to give you a sporting chance of realising what you’re supposed to be looking at when you take the time to view my images.

But Ali likes to bring Rosie here, her sister’s cocker spaniel who loves to race over the clifftops in her endless search for unwary rabbits. Sometimes I go with them, just to get a breath of air and a small dose of vitamin D from those mood filled winter skies, and New Year’s Day brought a classic “I suppose I’d better move my backside from the sofa” moment. The Great Escape wasn’t on the TV anyway as far as I could tell, and if Steve McQueen couldn’t be bothered to entertain me with his motorcycle antics then it seemed that the world was telling me to go outside and embrace it. I don’t always take the camera with me on these outings, but then again, I usually regret it as soon as I take one look at the sea. A couple of weeks earlier we’d arrived here on a sunny Thursday afternoon; one of those calm winter days when the Atlantic was propelling perfectly formed rollers crowned with snowy white plumes of seaspray towards the shore. The phone clearly wasn’t up to it and I cursed myself for failing to do the simplest of things and putting the camera in the bag with a suitably long lens. The sense of lost opportunity from that beautiful day remained with me, and since then each time I’ve gone to the clifftop tooled up for action – albeit without a tripod.

I hadn’t intended to do anything more than take a couple of shots to dabble with half-heartedly in an idle moment in Lightroom later, but as we arrived at the view over the beach, two things caught my eye. Firstly, the swell was in a playful mood, with phases where groups of waves would break extravagantly across the scene. And secondly the cliffs beyond somewhere just off Portreath to the west had almost completely disappeared into a haze of sea mist. Normally from this spot you can see all the way across to St Ives, even on a dull day, but today things were different. And so the inevitable came home to roost. With seascapes every single image is unique, bringing the usual inability to know when to stop that afflicts me every time I’m in this situation, and my co-walkers were soon somewhere over the horizon above me on their circuit towards Chapel Porth of the eastern side of the cliff.

I really should have brought a tripod with me. I’d made my usual mistake of bringing the unforgiving but lightweight budget lens with the enormous focal range; the one where I’m never sure about exactly what it’s focusing on. I tried sitting on the grass, then balancing the camera on my knee and using the touchscreen autofocus, but I couldn’t really see the composition properly. Through the viewfinder I tried it alternately in autofocus and then in manual focus, producing another glut of raw files that would take some sifting later. As the time since I’d last seen Ali and Rosie increased, soft peachy tones began to gently warm the sky. With little idea as to whether I’d got a worthwhile shot, I eventually decided that enough was enough and chased off along the path in search of my companions. The inside of Ali’s car may resemble a farmyard as a result of the extracurricular dog walking activities, but getting into it was still far preferable to walking home. Besides which we might get a cup of tea at her sister’s house as a reward for our efforts.

Later that evening the sifting began. The good news was that each time I went through the many, image number 9048 stood out. After three passes through the lot of them, firstly on the PC’s photo viewing software and then in Lightroom, image 9048 was still the one that caught my attention. I think it was the two lines of breaking waves that singled it out. And gradually, very much like that Tamron lens and Porthtowan itself, the image grew on me. The energy of the ocean below me and the soft sky palette had conspired to win me over. Somehow from this unprepared adventure I’d managed to wrestle an image I thought worthy of sharing with this most discerning of audiences. I hope it passes muster.

Still wish I’d taken my tripod though. Do have a lovely weekend.

The traditional red box was painted in the colours of the Union flag, with the Royal Standard draped over the top.The Royal's shown in this shot, are the Queen with her beloved corgi and Prince Harry, striking the Usain Bolt pose. The box was originally located in London is now being temporarily located in Clifton, before moving around the country.

Fortunately Hare coursing was banned in the UK in 2008.

Hares can reach maximum speeds of 35 mph (56 km/h) in short distances of approximately 90 meters, and a top speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) for about 20 meters.

Leatherback Sea Turtle: Fastest Reptile in the World: 21.92 mph

Man (Usain Bolt): 23.4 MPH

Sailfish: Fastest Animal in the Ocean: 68 MPH

Cheetah: Fastest Animal on Land: 70 MPH

And the winner.. The fastest animal on the planet is...

Peregrine Falcon: 242 MPH

(Fastest measured speed In a dive)

Enough said! ?

Well not quite... In level flight, the peregrine, with an average speed of 40 mph, is not even quick enough to catch a pigeon!

Luckily I photographed this one in 'Pigeon mode'!

My little Usain Bolt !!! Arturo on the beach last year, today comparing the photos I realize everything you've grown!

This was built for Bricks Culture Magazine as part of my one year residency. My challenge was to create a portrait. For a full explanation for the build you will have to read the article but essentially I wanted to portray a sporting hero of mine (in motion) and who better than Usain Bolt, especially as the Olympics are just around the corner. The terracotta background was inspired by ancient Greek pottery creating another connection to the Olympics. I really hope you like this one as it is my favourite of my ‘in motion’ range.

I have used glue to create this photo however the build is possible without glue, it only needs a transparent piece supporting the groin.

I would love to hear your comments.

Kingfisher drying off after a dive, Usain Bolt style

Found this gnarly fellow dabbing away in the woods on Dartmoor. He looks like Usain Bolt pulling off his signature move lol. I am sure I missed dozens more compositions in this wood but was overwhelmed a little bit by the conditions and subject matter. I guess with more experience I will be able to focus more and train my eye to pick out those killer shots more quickly.

I have clearly booked my two week break way too early as the colours in my area now are magnificent and rueing the fact that I now have to work 7 days this week to cover a colleague at work who has taken his hols this week but has no interest in photography! Gutted....

Yes, 9.72s!! I will always remember this guy’s name: Usain Bolt from Jamaica – just like a lightning bolt, 21 years old, the 5th time in a race and he broke the men’s 100m world record… I watched the whole race live at the Icahn Stadium in the Reebok Randall’s Island Grand Prix meet. It was breathtaking… in fact, he got Tyson Gay (9.85s) chasing the whole way, read here.

I and several friends of mine were watching the whole tournament especially to see the world champion and Olympic gold medalist Liu Xiang to compete in the Men’s 110m hurdle. But it turned out that Xiang mildly hurt his hamstring during practice and therefore couldn’t race just to be conservative for the coming Olympics … he came and said sorry to all the fans though :) It was late at night. Just when we were about to leave, someone said oh let’s see the last race - the Men’s 100m. And of course we stayed and were expecting Tyson Gay to put up yet another amazing performance. But now you know what happened… I am glad that I wasn’t trying to shoot photos in the race otherwise I would miss seeing the most amazing 100m race in my life. I was standing in the middle of the home stretch on the audience stand. There were 2 false starts before they finally got a clean one… when the runners passed my location, Usain Bolt was 1.5 yard ahead of Tyson Gay and both seemed to be in the same pace but we then saw Mr. Bolt hit the finish line first. I was just about to talk, one of my friends yelled at us – look at this, 9.71. He broke the world record!!! (they later adjusted it to 9.72 adding the wind speed) Oh yes, I knew that Tyson would not run slow but it was this guy who ran really fast… just amazing! Then he walked the whole lap and came around to the home stretch again... that's when I took this photo. There were thousands of Jamaican fans chanting and he waved to them, may not be realizing how excited everybody was…

Oh btw, it was a nice Saturday evening, loved it! I watched the amazing performances by Veronica Campbell-Brown (my all-time favorite :)) (10.91s) in the Women’s 100m, Wallace Spearmon’s 20.07s in 200m and Xavier Carter’s 44.70s in the Men’s 400m. Really nice races! And, Sanya Richards was signing autographs and taking photos with fans at the end :)

Near the end of this walk with Heptonstall on the hill in the distance!

This young killdeer reminded me of Usain Bolt as it dashed away a split-second after I snapped the shot. It looks nearly identical to an adult now and could fly if it felt really threatened.

Roadrunners have been clocked at 20mph. Not as fast as Usain Bolt, but faster than most of us can sprint. This is a crop of a panned snapshot taken at dusk. I hope the blur gives the illusion of high speed... (f5.6, 200mm, 1/15, ISO 400, handheld)

Usain Bolt's 9.63 seconds was just 0.05 seconds slower than his own world record, was a new Olympic best and capped a race in which seven men went under 10 seconds.

I love taking panning shots. A while back while waiting in the Passengers Lounge I took one shot of a plane about to take off!

I use name of famous Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt in my title because of nice rhyme. Everybody are invited to House of salt at city Nin :o).

P.s. 12th September 2017. Oh my God what a tragedy :(. Flood make a big damage yesterday at Nin and Zadar too.
