We left Sydney on the 20th August 2018 and flew to Hawaii where we spent a relaxing three days in Waikiki. Good weather conditions prevailed till late on the night of our departure.
** Hurricane Lane had been building in intensity in the South Eastern Pacific Ocean since 15th August and was predicted to reach category 5 status by the time it came within reach of Hawaii.
We were fortunate that we flew out of Hawaii on our scheduled flight the same night but before Hurricane Lane made landfall on Oahu.
Hurricane Lane became the wettest tropical cyclone on record in Hawaii. It also ranked as the second-wettest tropical cyclone in United States history, after Hurricane Harvey of 2017. Wikipedia
Our departure flight, late on the night of 22nd of August, was full as one might expect and I believe, one of the last flights out of Hawaii for several days following Lanes ascendency.
Lane was considered unusual in that its path had threatened to bring it closer to Hawaii than most Hurricanes had come in the past so Hawaii was on full alert the whole time we were there.
We flew to Los Angeles, and with just an hour between flights, on to Seattle from where we commenced our driving journey through many of the USA's amazing National Parks, from Waterton (Canada) in the north, travelling through some amazing scenery as far south as Las Vegas.
** A bit more info relating to Hurricane Lane from Wikipedia.
Hurricane Lane was only the second Category 5 hurricane to pass within 350 miles (560 km) of South Point, Hawaii. The other one was John in 1994.
Lane prompted the issuance of hurricane watches and warnings for every island in Hawaii. From August 22 to 26, Lane brought heavy rain to much of the Hawaiian Windward Islands, which caused flash flooding and mudslides. Strong winds downed trees and power lines on Maui, and brush fires ignited on both Maui and Oahu. One fatality occurred on Kauai, and damage across the state reached at least $200 million (2018 USD).

One mile past the blowhole is the world-famous bodyboarding beach, Sandy Beach shown here in this image. There is also a Lava Tube at the back of Halona Cove Beach.

Resorts L to R
1. - Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina - 92-1001 Olani St, Kapolei, HI 96707, USA
2. - Aulani - A Disney Resort & Spa - 92-1185 Ali'inui Dr, Kapolei, HI 96707, USA
3. - Ko Olina Beach Villas Ocean Tower - 92-102 Waialii Pl, Kapolei, HI 96707, USA
Apparently, these beaches were excavated by resort developers, the bays created and the sand imported (maybe from Australia). Apparently, the excavation of the, now four Ko Olina Lagoons, was granted provisional to the developers allowing public beach access.
Hawaii is interesting though in that much of the land surface is basaltic lava flow so most of the soil in green areas on golf courses is achieved by fine crushing basalt to make soil.
This is a nostaligic memory sketch of Venice Beach, California as I recall it the first time I saw it in the summer of 1959. I recall the aroma of sub sandwiches, the tantalizing scents of suntan lotions and the sound of uproarious laughter as I walked along the promenade, that cement strip that some refer to as the boardwalk. Jumping on and off the trams seemed to be the kind of fun that delighted the adolescentsof that late 50s and early 60s culture. The drivers, mostly men, didn't scream or shout, they treated everyone like they had a transit pass. It is possible that they too were equally as mellow at the passengers. Though Venice eventually acquired a reputation as a kind of pot paradise for grass smokers, there didn't seem to be a lot of it going on in the time I spent there. There was a lot more drinking out of brown paper bags then as compared to those sucking up the last exhaustive inhalations of joints. Believe it or not, I never smoked a joint until long after my beatnik and Navy days were over and done.
Laguna Beach is a small coastal city in Orange County, California, known for its rugged coves, tide pools, and long-standing art scene. Originally a retreat for plein air painters in the early 20th century, it developed into a popular destination for both tourism and counterculture. Today, it remains a mix of upscale beach town and creative enclave, with art festivals, galleries, and a protected marine reserve drawing visitors year-round. The city’s strict building regulations have helped preserve its natural beauty and historic character, particularly along its scenic coastline and walkable downtown area.

Edgar always came to see me when i returned to laguna every summer for years. And then, one summer, he did'nt show up. Edgar was gone, out of my life forever. I knew he had gone on to where seagulls go when their wings finally tire...
