Epic place: Hearst Castle, in San Simeon, along Highway 1. When you cruise from San Francisco to Los Angeles down to San Diego, it is an excellent stop at San Simeon and Hearst Castle, recommended.
It was built between 1919 and 1947 by William Randolph Hearst, the publishing tycoon, and his architect, Julia Morgan.

Cité de la mode et du design - Paris - France
J'ai ouvert le diaph à fond pour que le temps de pose ne soit pas trop long. Je ne voulais pas que l'eau soit trop lissée.
Les Docks - La Cité de la mode et du design, est un bâtiment situé à l'emplacement des anciens magasins généraux quai d'Austerlitz, à Paris1. L'ouverture au public, initialement prévue début 2008, a eu lieu au printemps 2012.
L'Institut français de la mode s'est installé en 2008 dans un bâtiment construit par le cabinet d'architectes Jakob + Macfarlane.
Depuis le 16 novembre 2013, le site accueille Art ludique - Le Musée, musée consacré au divertissement (dessin animé, cinéma, jeu vidéo, bande dessinée...).

Les Docks, en référence à la vocation première du bâtiment industriel qui en constitue l’ossature, propriété du Port autonome de Paris qu’il gère au nom de l’Etat. Construit en 1907 pour accueillir en bord de Seine les marchandises transitant des péniches vers la gare d’Austerlitz toute proche, l’architecte Georges Morin-Goustiaux choisit de ne pas habiller d’une façade-décor ces Magasins généraux comme cela se faisait, laissant à nu son ouvrage en béton. Une première en France, un choix architectural décrié à l’époque pour son côté novateur et jugé inesthétique par certains. Cent ans plus tard, un esprit d’avant-garde toujours pas goûté de tous, en l’occurrence pas par le maire de Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, qui, en 2007, en parla comme d’un « lieu assez moche », son adjectif fétiche quand quelque chose lui déplaît.
En 2004, la Ville de Paris dépensa 23 millions d’euros pour l’acquisition des droits d’occupation durant 50 ans et le dédommagement des quelques occupants (notamment un magasin Saint-Maclou). La ville lança alors une consultation en vue d’une réaffectation du site quasi à l’abandon que la précédente mandature prévoyait de démolir. On chassa au passage les nombreux SDF qui y avaient trouvés refuge tout en étant un haut lieu de drague gay nocturne, immortalisé en 1992 dans le film « Les nuits fauves » de Cyrille Collard. C’est la Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, via sa filiale Icade qui remporta le marché en mars 2005 grâce à son concept de Centre de valorisation de la création « dans les secteurs de la mode, du design ou des loisirs culturels » avec un investissement de 40 millions d’euros (plus le rachat des droits d’occupation) et la promesse de « créer un lieu qui signe le Paris du 21éme siècle ».
La réhabilitation confiée à l’agence Jakob + MacFarlane, les deux architectes choisirent de ne pas masquer le bâtiment d’origine mais de le recouvrir « d’une peau dynamique, active, intrigante et végétale qui fait écho à l’eau et à la nature », appelée Plug Over. Une structure tubulaire de couleur verte conçue par modélisation informatique et distorsion de la trame du bâti, sérigraphiée et ondulante qui vient comme s’y greffer, ce qui en fait toute l’originalité. Le toit est végétalisé bien qu’on ne le distingue guère depuis la rue.
Livrée en 2008, la réalisation fut commentée avec mépris par le président de la République de l’époque, Nicolas Sarkozy - « Ce truc vert collé sur le bâtiment doit être de l’architecture. Chacun ses goûts » - ce qui lui valut une réponse outrée de ses deux auteurs qui dénoncèrent des « termes réactionnaires ». Ce qui ne manque pas de sel vu la manière dont M. Delanoë avait jugé l’ouvrage de leur prédécesseur en proie, à son époque, aux mêmes critiques simplistes. Un Bertrand Delanoë qui, en revanche, ne tarit pas d’éloges sur le bâtiment relooké, parlant, lors d’une visite de chantier en octobre 2007, d’une « œuvre majeure ». « J’ai le sentiment que c’est une des plus belles choses qui va naître à Paris » ajouta-t-il . Ce même jour, Jean-Pierre Caffet, son adjoint à l’urbanisme, y voyait « LE « geste architectural » qui restera de cette mandature ». Pour son ouverture au public en avril 2012, Lyne Cohen-Solal, adjointe chargée notamment des métiers d’art, s’enflammera à son tour : « Quand le centre Pompidou a ouvert, tout le monde y allait de son surnom : l’usine à gaz, la raffinerie... Aujourd’hui, personne n’imaginerait Paris sans Beaubourg ». Enfin, en toute modestie, le site web des Docks n’hésite pas à évoquer « l’un des monuments contemporains les plus remarquables de la capitale par l’audace de son architecture ». S’il ne mérite certainement pas l’opprobre, mérite-t-il tant de louanges ? Pas sûr.
CHAPELET DE MALHEURS
Passons avec pudeur sur le fiasco assez ahurissant de la naissance de ce projet, situation dénoncée de bonne guerre par l’opposition parisienne tandis que l’équipe municipale rejetait toute la responsabilité sur la Caisse des dépôts et sa société gestionnaire SCI Docks en Seine. Il faut dire, que c’est un véritable chapelet de malheurs : ouverture retardée plusieurs fois sur quatre ans tandis que les charges s’accumulaient, succession de trois directions, complications administratives, baux prohibitifs, mauvaise accessibilité autant pour les piétons que pour les voitures, arrêt de la navette fluviale Voguéo, défauts d’aménagement en tous genres...
Que penser du lieu maintenant qu’il est enfin ouvert au public sous la houlette des sociétés Clipperton Développement et Urbantech à qui ont été confiées la commercialisation et l’animation du lieu ? Sincèrement, l’enthousiasme nous manque pour en dire du bien. Si l’extérieur, côté Seine, ne nous a jamais transcendé du fait surtout de sa couleur, à part de nuit - la magnifique mise en lumière est signée Yann Kersalé -, sa façade côté rue est encore plus décevante. La couleur vert pomme associée à des formes triangulaires nous fait bêtement penser à un magasin de bricolage. Si, de l’intérieur, les points de vue sur la Seine sont inattendus, l’aménagement sommaire laisse sur sa faim, loin de ce que laissait présager le caractère futuriste de l’enveloppe extérieure. Désert, d’un design pauvre plutôt que sobre, ouvert à tous les vents, le lieu n’est pas franchement accueillant et serait même plutôt inhospitalier. Une impression renforcée par la présence de vigiles - tout à fait sympathiques, là n’est pas le problème - qui vont et viennent pour sécuriser l’endroit, le bâtiment étant totalement isolé, coincé entre le pont Charles-de-Gaulle et une rue peu fréquentée par les piétons, sans autre vis à vis que la Seine.
Le toit terrasse végétalisé par le paysagiste Michel Desvignes est, à nos yeux, la partie le plus réussie. Cet espace des plus attractifs, offrant une vue inégalée sur les quais, n’a pas été accessible en même temps que le reste, la préfecture, énième malheur, ayant refusé son ouverture pour des questions de sécurité : insuffisance d’escaliers et d’accès pour handicapés. Ouvert depuis le début de l’été librement en journée, tout du moins pour l’instant, on n’y trouve cependant rien pour s’asseoir, ce qui est fort dommage. Peut-être s’agit-il d’une incitation à consommer au Moon Roof, bar-restaurant installé là et qui propose, le soir, une ambiance DJ. Si le design du mobilier s’adapte harmonieusement au lieu, les palmiers, en revanche, dans l’ambiance végétale minimaliste créée par Michel Desvignes, c’est pas possible (conseil d’un botaniste : des euphorbes en pots). Un autre bar, ultra branchouille, devrait ouvrir prochainement en vis-à -vis. La terrasse restera-t-elle alors encore en accès libre ou sera-t-elle totalement privatisée ?
