"The first trip outside of my host city, Vienna, brought us to a beautiful monastery overlooking the city of Melk along the Danube river in Lower Austria. I remember taking this photo of a traditional Austrian town and the feeling of excitement that washed over me as I thought about all that I was about to experience during my semester abroad."

"The mountain range consisting of Mount Vesuvius stands triumphantly through a window of one of Pompeii’s ruined buildings. The volcano which caused the city’s downfall continues to overlook the destructed city seemingly proudly."

Ripon Water Tower

175-foot-tall facility holds 1.5 million gallons of water

Ripon's tower

stands 175 feet tall with a tank that's 60 feet wide.

Driving by Highway 99 at Jack Tone Road, the tower looks like a sentry and acts

like a massive billboard for the city with the Ripon name and logo emblazoned

unabashedly across the tank.

Then, there's the functionality of it all. The tank holds 1.5 million gallons of

water, making it a symbol for life itself in this parched Valley.

To call it a mere water tower hardly seems appropriate.

?It's a hydro-pillar,? said Tom Uppena, the project manager for CBI

constructors of Texas, which built the structure in 2003 for $2 million.

He said the Texas-size hydro-pillar in Ripon is the biggest of its type in

California. The only other one like it is in Dinuba, near Fresno. But it's not

as large.

Ripon city engineer Matthew Machado immediately saw the advantage of elevated

water storage as an efficient way to provide constant water pressure at any

demand level. Water demands vary in Ripon from

3 million to 8 million gallons a day, he said.

But beyond the mere utility aspect, Machado said there was an allure of having

the pillar become ?a monument to the city.?

?You could see it from 580 and the Altamont,? Machado said. ?It's cool.?

Another value of the elevated hydro-pillar style is the enclosed space on top of

which the storage tank sits.

?The legged towers can't use that space below,? Uppena said. ?It's wasted.?

Entering the tower from the ground is like going inside a big hollow tube 60

feet wide and 130 feet tall. The tank is above that.

Some cities have turned the interior space into fire stations or garages, Uppena

said. Ripon hasn't done much with the bottom part yet.

A tour of the inside of the pillar reveals considerable warehouse space that

holds a few of the city's surplus items. There's an old Smokey Joe barbecue, a

Stairmaster, file cabinets and office chairs. The city's sewer vacuum and

pothole fixer also are parked there.

But Ripon is saving its best ideas for when it builds a second hydro-pillar at

the Mistlin Field sports complex a few miles away, northeast of Highway 99 at

River Road.

Not quite a twin, the new pillar will be 80 feet wide with 15,000 square feet

below the tank. This time, Ripon will develop the space into meeting rooms,

concessions and an observation deck.

The cost? Seven million dollars, Machado said. The higher costs of steel and all

the detailed work will add to the expense.

Construction has begun at the base of the second hydro-pillar, which Machado

said should be completed by 2007 or ?08.

For now, the current hydro-pillar is enough to send Machado into raptures.

?It's a sign of prosperity and growth,? he said of the Ripon tower. ?It has the

look of strength, community strength. If you don't have water, you don't have

community.?
