Sky shot, to test low ISO noise and Active D-lighting (set to normall).

Converted in Adobe Camera Raw 4.3, and saved in PS CS3 at as high a level of JPEG as possible to fit under Flickr’s 10mb file limit (quality 12 or 11 setting).

This version from ACR has had manual adjustments in the “recover” and “fill light” dialogs to try and emulate the unclipped shadows and highlights of Active D-Lighting metadata that ACR doesn’t support (at this time).

The story:

About two weeks ago I got the chance to hold and shoot on my own card with a pre-production Nikon D3 and D300. The D300 is the focus of this set of test shots, as I am on the list to get one of the first production models ( yes, retiring the long serving D70).

The camera couldn’t leave the sight of the Nikon people, so these were taken within 5 feet of the front door of the camera shop in Portland and I only had a couple minutes to shoot something. The camera was set to record medium jpeg + RAW and the reason I have not posted these was the lack of compatible RAW converters and that the jpegs had compression artifacts just from the file format, not because of anything to do with the quality of the camera. Adobe has just released version 4.3 of it’s PhotoShop Adobe Camera Raw plugin now supporting the D3 and D300, and Nikon View NX has been updated to support it as well, so now I can compare RAW output from two converters.

I mainly wanted to test the new Active D-Lighting feature that corrects the dynamic range at the time of shooting (as opposed to post processing). I also shot a couple higher ISO shots for those into that. It’s rare I would shoot that high, but they’re good enough that I will probably shoot by setting my shutter and f-stop manually and putting it on auto-iso, something I would never trust my D70 to do.

All these shots were taken with the new 24-70mm 2.8 lens.

My opinion is that it is a fantastic and capable camera, one I will be hard pressed to find it’s limitations anytime soon. I honestly believe that it is capable of equaling or besting the image quality of any current or previous Nikon DSLR. That’s right, look at the most interesting D2X shots on Flickr. Given the same quality of lenses and photographic talent the D300 should be capable of anything that nice.

This is an update on the tub of flowers posted earlier (see below). The slugs and snails have not chewed it up, but then nor have they chewed the other identical one which does not have the copper tape deterrent. I don't think they like crossing the gravel underneath.

The alstroemerias have come up very quickly to fill the gap at the back.

Here's another picture of the little mice I found about a week ago. I took them some chinchilla food I had left over from my chinchilla, so they're set for food for awhile.

Just a few weeks to go!

Not too sure if any of my contacts on here particularly care about my life, but I just thought I'd let you guys know what I've been up to.

If I had to sum up everything? Everything's fine. I've come to realize I say that phrase way too often, but it bluntly describes so much.

Since starting to work for Pup Fresh, I've been given so many great opportunities and shows to cover. I'm forever grateful, I wish I could take an entire week of my life just to edit pictures from the past three months and sleep. But alas, I'm a senior in high school. Between AP Photography, being the President of the NAHS chapter at my school, a member of the robotics team, Science Olympiad, hanging out with friends, taking senior pictures/band promos, and so much more, I'm incredibly busy. Combine that with covering shows and my schedule is completely full, with hardly anytime to do homework rather than sleep (averaging four hours a night, holla'.) Not saying that I want to slow down, I absolutely love my life right now and wouldn't change it for anything (okay, MAYBE I'd include a working relationship.) I have to at least try to keep my grades up so colleges will accept me.

Speaking of college, I haven't been accepted anywhere yet so I'm still going crazy over that. Still hoping my 3.0 GPA and ACT score of 28 pulls out for me somewhere. I don't really know where I want to go, which makes everything worse. I know I want to end up on the east coast (specifically New York), not so sure if right now is the time to dig up my roots.

Anyways, I'm sure I'll have pictures edited and put up between now and the New Years. That's my goal - to have all pictures taken this year put up in 2011. I'll definitely be able to do it, I might even have it all done by Christmas break, about 2 weeks away.

Everything's resolved. The issue was Windows not recognizing my USB port for some reason.

Also have to say that the support at Drobo is pretty awesome. Two calls from them today to make sure I'm ok. You don't get that very often.
