Garmisch et Partenkirchen étaient deux villes de Bavière voisines mais bien distinctes et séparées jusqu’à ce qu’en 1935 Adolf Hitler ait souhaité que les deux villes s’unissent pour la célébration des Jeux Olympiques d’hiver en 1936. Les Jeux Olympiques d’hiver de 1940 sont attribués à Garmisch-Partenkirchen, mais la Seconde Guerre Mondial entraîne définitivement l’annulation des Jeux. Les villes sont depuis restées unies tout en étant …bien différentes.

Je suis né ici, face à cette mer toujours incertaine

dont les ancêtres étaient venus de loin pour s’inventer un pays tout aussi incertain.
Moi, je suis poète. Mais c’est pareil… un zeste aventurier.
Je reviens ici de temps à autre
Pour mieux entendre les battements de mon coeur…
…s’emballer lorsqu’un poisson récalcitrant mord à ma ligne…
Et entendre Paul, un ami de jeunesse resté ici, se moquer de moi en me regardant paniquer, comme il le faisait autrefois. Il y a des choses qu’on ne veut pas voir changer…
…Comme notre vieille école qui lutte pour conserver une illusoire jeunesse.
Je reviens ici de temps à autre
Pour mieux entendre les battements de mon coeur…
…se briser en voyant le vide laissé par la disparition de l’Hôtel Central et de son propriétaire. Monsieur Smith, toujours souriant, me laissait jouer de la contrebasse, debout sur une chaise dans la salle de bal. J’étais trop petit…
…s’accélérer comme une tornade en retrouvant les gravures de mon nom et de celui de Jeanne, unies par un coeur, cachées sur le mur arrière du vieux hangar de pêche rouge, face à la mer. C’était notre secret.
Ce vieux hangar était alors pour moi, le centre du monde!
Il l’est resté.

... speed up like a tornado when finding the engravings of my name and that of Jeanne, united by a heart, hidden on the back wall of the old red fishing shed, facing the sea. It was our secret.
This old shed was then for me the center of the world!

Gedenkmünze 750 Jahre Berlin
Im Jahr 1237 wurde aus den beiden Handelsorten Cölln und Berlin eine Städteunion gebildet, die sich gegenseitig eine militärische und rechtliche Zusammenarbeit garantierten. 1432 schlossen sich beide Orte zu der Doppelstadt Cölln-Berlin zusammen. Die offizielle Vereinigung zur Stadt Berlin erfolgte erst im Jahr 1709.
Im Jahr 1987 wurde, „BERLIN 750 JAHRE“ alt. Das damals noch in „West/Ost geteilte Berlin veranstaltete in beiden Teilen der Stadt Gründungfeiern. Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland hat aus diesem Anlass diese 10 DM werte Gedenkmünze geprägt. Auf dem Rand der Münze steht „ Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit“. Diese Münze ist auch heute noch ein Zahlungsmittel, sie hat aber eher einen Sammlerwert.
Der Bär auf der Münze ist längs geteilt, die Linie zeigt wo Berlin in West (links) und Ost (rechts) getrennt wurde.

Commemorative coin 750 years Berlin
In 1237 a union of cities was formed from the two trading towns of Cölln and Berlin, which guaranteed each other military and legal cooperation. In 1432 both towns joined to form the twin town of Cölln-Berlin. The official union to the city of Berlin did not take place until 1709.
In 1987, "BERLIN 750 YEARS" became old. Berlin, at that time still divided into West and East, organized founding celebrations in both parts of the city to mark the occasion. The Federal Republic of Germany has minted this 10 DM commemorative coin on this occasion. On the edge of the coin it says " Unity and right and freedom". This coin is still today a means of payment, but it has more of a collector's value.
The bear on the coin is divided lengthwise, the line shows where Berlin was divided into West (left) and East (right).

Pièce commémorative 750 ans de Berlin
En 1237, une union de villes est formée à partir des deux villes marchandes de Cölln et Berlin, qui se garantissent mutuellement une coopération militaire et juridique. En 1432, les deux villes se sont unies pour former la ville jumelle de Cölln-Berlin. L'union officielle avec la ville de Berlin n'a eu lieu qu'en 1709.
En 1987, "BERLIN 750 ANS" est devenu vieux. Berlin, alors encore divisée entre l'Ouest et l'Est, a organisé des célébrations de fondation dans les deux parties de la ville pour marquer l'occasion. La République fédérale d'Allemagne a frappé cette pièce commémorative de 10 DM à cette occasion. Sur le bord de la pièce, il est écrit "Unité, droit et liberté". Cette pièce est encore aujourd'hui un moyen de paiement, mais elle a plutôt une valeur de collectionneur.
L'ours sur la pièce est divisé dans le sens de la longueur, la ligne montre où Berlin a été divisée en Ouest (à gauche) et en Est (à droite).

Quick update for my Flickr friends - about Jonathan’s accident which involved falling flat on his face. Spent over 5 hours in eye casualty yesterday with a covering note on his optician’s findings which pretty much were the same at the hospital. No ocular bleed but one eye still being pulled slightly to one side due to the muscle being affected and in the same eye the Iris not dilating properly so he needs a repeat scan in a few weeks but they were not overly concerned so we are off to the beach today come rain hail or shine :)

Oh yes this was bracketed hand held with my back against the wall so I could also brace my arm on the wall behind me.

Canada Day celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act, 1867, when the three separate colonies of the United Canadas, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into a single dominion within the British Empire called Canada.
Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the same year that the Canadian constitution was patriated by the Canada Act, 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

Against the backdrop of a fading day, the sun cloaked itself behind the skeletal silhouette of an electrical tower. The usually bold celestial body was now a shy luminary, playing hide and seek with the world below. Strands of sunlight streamed through the steel lattice, creating an intricate dance of shadow and light. The normally cold, impersonal tower was momentarily transformed into a grand stage for the sun's golden farewell. As the sun receded, its light flickered, mimicking the pulsing energy coursing through the tower. Two powerhouses of energy, one natural and one man-made, united briefly in this captivating dusk spectacle.
Sur fond de journée qui s'estompe, le soleil s'est dissimulé derrière la silhouette squelettique d'une tour électrique. Le corps céleste habituellement audacieux est devenu un luminaire timide, jouant à cache-cache avec le monde en dessous. Des brins de lumière du soleil traversaient le treillis d'acier, créant une danse complexe d'ombre et de lumière. La tour normalement froide et impersonnelle s'est momentanément transformée en une grande scène pour les adieux dorés du soleil. Au fur et à mesure que le soleil reculait, sa lumière scintillait, imitant l'énergie pulsante qui traversait la tour. Deux centrales d'énergie, l'une naturelle et l'autre créée par l'homme, se sont brièvement unies dans ce spectacle captivant du crépuscule.
My first infrared shot for a while - taken at St. Uny's church in Lelant - I love this place right by the sea. I always think my Hoya infrared filter suits ruins, graveyards and churches.
I am finding my second hobby/activity, running, is taking more of my time at the moment, I intend to run the Cornish Grand prix, a 15 race running championship - I must find time for photography though and will be out this week!

The Altar at St Uni Church. The earliest references to St Uny church are in 1150 and 1170. Both documents give the church and tithes to the Priory of St Andrew at Tywardreath. The 1170 document bears the signature of the archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket.

Nuart Aberdeen, the award-winning and internationally renowned street art festival, returned to the walls of the Granite City from 6-9 June 2024.
The theme for 2024 festival is 'Living Heritage’ and brought 11 acclaimed artists to visit Aberdeen to create new artwork in the city, ranging from large murals to smaller, more intricate installations.
HERA (Jasmin Siddiqui) is a Frankfurt-born German-Pakistani painter with artistic roots in the graffiti and street art genre. She has been travelling the world since 2001 painting large-scale murals
HERA was part of “Artists for Human Rights“, the first ever street art exhibition inside the European Parliament in Brussels in December 2022. In 2023 she worked on several United Nations funded projects with the NGO “Streetart for Mankind“ promoting social change.

Nuart Aberdeen, le festival d'art de rue primé et de renommée internationale, est revenu sur les murs de Granite City du 6 au 9 juin 2024.
Le thème du festival 2024 est « Patrimoine vivant » et a amené 11 artistes de renom à visiter Aberdeen pour créer de nouvelles œuvres d'art dans la ville, allant de grandes peintures murales à des installations plus petites et plus complexes.

La chapelle fut érigée en 1608 par le capitaine Thierry Le Jeune, seigneur de la Baillerie et officier brabançon de l'archiduc Albert, afin de remercier la Vierge de l'avoir protégé de la mort durant la Guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans provoquée par la révolte des Pays-Bas septentrionaux (Provinces-Unies) contre le royaume d'Espagne.

The Try-au-Chêne chapel, also called the Notre-Dame de Hault chapel, is a rural chapel located in Bousval, a village dependent on the Belgian town of Genappe, in Walloon Brabant.
The chapel was erected in 1608 by Captain Thierry Le Jeune, Lord of La Baillerie and Brabant officer of the Archduke Albert, in order to thank the Virgin for having protected him from death during the Eighty Years' War caused by the revolt of the Northern Netherlands (United Provinces) against the Kingdom of Spain.

Located in downtown Ottawa, this monument is the first in the world dedicated to universal human rights. It is a tribute to the historic struggle of all people to obtain and safeguard their fundamental rights. This monument symbolizes Canadians’ commitment to live in peace in a society based on these rights.
The monument portal is inscribed with the first words of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Within the monument, granite plaques are inscribed with the words “Equality,” “Dignity” and “Rights” in 73 languages of Canada’s First Nations peoples. The plaques highlight the vital role that language plays in preserving culture.
September 24, 1998, marked the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To honour the occasion, the President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, unveiled a commemorative plaque at the monument which was dedicated to John Peters Humphrey. This Canadian jurist was the author of the first draft of the declaration, during the time that he was director of the United Nations Division of Human Rights.
The monument was created by Melvin Charney in 1989, and unveiled in 1990 by the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s leader in exile.

Situé au centre-ville d’Ottawa, ce monument est le premier du monde à avoir été consacré aux droits de la personne. Il rappelle les luttes historiques de tous les peuples pour obtenir et sauvegarder leurs droits fondamentaux. Cette œuvre symbolise l’engagement des Canadiens à vivre en paix dans une société fondée sur ces droits.
Le portail est gravé des premiers mots de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme des Nations Unies: « Tous les êtres humains naissent libres et égaux en dignité et en droits ». À l’intérieur du monument, les mots « égalité », « dignité » et « droits » sont gravés en 73 langues des Premières nations du Canada sur des plaques de granit. Ces plaques soulignent le rôle essentiel de la langue dans la préservation des cultures.
Le 24 septembre 1998 a marqué le 50e anniversaire de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’homme des Nations Unies. It was dreich and almost like fog but I believe sea mist due to the high winds but it suited me as only myself Jonathan and our dogs were actually on the beach at this particular bit anyway.. Taken just at the far steps down to the beach with Godrevy to the right of here. Through the mist I believe I can just make out the pine trees and St Uny church at Lelant but stand to be corrected. I am not sure how much detail is lost due to compression by uploading to Flickr. I have tried to catch up but am aware there are a few more of you left to catch up with but hope to catch up later today...Sue :)
With Snow falling, Ipswich Buses ADL Enviro 200 pulls away from Stutton on the 0825 Ipswich to Manningtree 92 service. KY55 UNY (77) was vice the usual Optare Versa. I belive these are quite sure footed on snow covered roads.

Le musée Ariana est un musée suisse de la céramique et du verre, situé à Genève, dans le parc homonyme. L'édifice se dresse à deux pas du palais des Nations, le siège de l'Office des Nations unies à Genève.

UN Broken Chair is a wooden sculpture located in the public square across the Palace of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
It symbolizes the despair and dignity of armed violence victims and aims to remind the obligation of states to protect and help victims.
Designed by Daniel Berset and constructed by Louis Genève, the chair is 12m high and made of 5.5 tons of wood.
