The red laterite rocks eroded by water and wind have developed into a magnificent vista in this corner of West Bengal.

Tucked away in the south-western corner of West Bengal is Gangani (or Gongoni), a nearly 70- feet deep natural canyon carved by the River Shilabati. Or, as the local people believe, it was the upheaval resulting from a fight between the demon Bakasura and the Pandava brother Bheem which dented the rocks. Local people also refer to it as Gangani Danga. Although far from the original in look and size, the place is popularly called the Grand Canyon of Bengal.

White Pocket is NOT an easy place to get to. You have to WANT to go here. The drive is long and challenging, and then there is a small bit of a hike. Bring water.

But once there, the surroundings are incredible! One could easily spend the entire day here, exploring, climbing, and taking in the dynamic landscapes. As the light changes, so does EVERYTHING! Grey whites, sage green, honey golds, tangerine oranges, dry dirt brown, and Arizona reds-- the color palette is stunning. Definitely worth all the trouble getting here :).

I saw an image like this somewhere in my murky past and it stuck with me so this is my interpretation

In the moments after Mt St Helens erupted, an entire forest fell like matchsticks. Here's one that remains amid the hummocks formations that line the Toutle River valley.

A hummock is debris that forms a large hill or mound left after a puroclastic flow.

Southwest of Olympia, the Mima Mounds Protected Area has some of the more unusual landscapes anywhere. First, natural grasslands are rare west of the Cascades. But even more so, these grasslands are covered with hundreds of symmetrically spaced mounds, about 20 feet in diameter and about 8 feet tall. No one's perfectly sure how they formed.

Original settlers assumed they were Native American burial grounds, but no evidence has turned up for this. Rapid glacial melt causes bumps, similar to the way waves create parallel striations in sand. Or, an earthquake can cause multiple resonance points that cause uplift like this. It seems certain that a rapid event caused the mounds.

They are an interesting site that not enough people visit. If you're ever in the area, take the hour from your day to visit this unusual landscape.

Bumpass Hell is the biggest volcanic area at Lassen Volcanic National Park. It's filled with fumeroles, steam vents, boiling lakes and mudpots. It's like another planet.

Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument. - the hummocks are a landform created by pyroclastic flow. This is the Toutle River valley up close. These piles of sand and debris were created by the reuption on May 18, 1980. They are quite intruiquing and otherworldly up close.

This tree is incredible, every season - winter spring summer fall. Dr. Seuss must either live in this house or be the designated arborist. Living sculpture.

This was weird...walking along the beach at low tide to find 1000s of Jellyfish beached in a massive long line for about half a mile...

As part of my first visit to the region, I had just under a week to explore Kyrgyzstan with my brother in April. We rented an old 4x4 and set off to explore and had an absolutely wonderful visit. The roads were challenging at times, but loads of fun. People were incredibly friendly and kind. The food was delightful. The horse herds and landscapes fascinating. Before the visit I didn't know what to expect, but Kyrgyzstan absolutely delighted us with its kindness, hospitality and beauty.
