Although the little mini vacation with the family to Chicago would involve a little railfanning, the CP F units were the last thing on my mind. So despite the Eco middle unit I figured a chance to shoot the CP Fs was something I should try out. Just north of the Illinois border, CP #40B heads south under WI Rt165 in Pleasant Prairie, WI on the C&M Sub. Thanks to BTC and CG for the location ideas and train updates.

Unplanned and unexpected encounter. Unbeknown to me this pup was delivered on the rock or in the water within hours of our encounter i.e. at the end of an ascent up the drying rock from a wreck dive .I noticed the placenta on the seabed as we hurriedly departed to leave it in peace. The mother left the pup, but returned when we left . The umbilical cord is still attached.

The grey seals pup in autumn and pups are white which is why I originally thought this seal was an adult .

I had been meaning to go out for CPKC I41 with a KCS Geep leading, and when I tuned into the IHB channel to see if they were headed back, I happen to hear this guy, IHB 721 (Norpaul Switcher?) calling with IHB 4013 ready to head to Paragon Manufacturing to drop their two cars. A completely lucky chance catch but one I am beyond happy with!

They are crossing 17th Ave here as they continue south towards Paragon.

An unplanned sunrise this morning, body clock woke me before my planned lie in, quick look out of window, clouds looked canny so it was a mad dash to the coast

Went for an unplanned, spur of the moment adventure with Rebeak today. The sun was shining and the skies were clear after several days of snow. It was one of those days where every shot I took I loved. Every step we took was a new photo opportunity of incredible lighting and reflections.

Unplanned, walked out on my dock this morning and there before my eyes.......

unplanned day off - off you go to whatipu beach, it's only 40 min drive from auckland but it feels remote, wild and brooding, all complete with a couple of very handsome rocks and a little lighthousey thing, black sand being a west coast beach

This was a totally unplanned shot from last Friday's adventure on the Cape. After shooting the departing excursion coming off the bridge at Canal Junction we barely beat them here to the site of the old Sagamore station thanks to faster than expected train speed and heavy summer traffic. Hoping out at the last moment I was quite pleased with this nice going away image of the southbound train.nnMeanwhile, already set up on the canal side of the tracks can be seen intrepid young shooter Vincent Colombo adding another to his stunning collection of images of railroading on Cape Cod. This is about MP 59.7 on the MassDOT owned and Mass Coastal Railroad Cape Main.

Mass Coastal's ex CDOT FL9 #2011 (blt. Sept. 1960 as NH #2038) brings up the rear here while on the other end of the four car train is sister FL9 #2026 (blt. Sept. 1957 as NH 2007) and both are very much at home here on these former New Haven rails.

An unplanned montage of images depicting both the invasion and beauty of rust.

18 months after my previous image of 58046 on the South Yorkshire Joint Line ( flic.kr/p/229ZVpy ), 58046 'Asfordby Mine' is pictured again working a coal train, but this time in the remains of the Leicestershire coalfield at Lounge.

The train is working from Toton to Hicks Lodge, a temporary opencast disposal point that operated from 1998 until around 2005. Lounge was itself a former opencast disposal point. The train was at Lounge to run around in the runround loop. Unfortunately, on this morning the runround was blocked due demolition work on the former rapid loader. Scrap from the rapid loader litters the run round loop.

On this windy February morning, Lounge was not a particularly comfortable place to lounge around: it became clear quite quickly that nothing was going to happen: either the loop would be cleared or the train would have to reverse back onto the mainline: we didn't wait around.

An unplanned opportunity presented itself this morning and it was quickly seized. With the Apache coming into town to pick up a windmill tower train, they brought back an empty hopper car that they used as a buffer car on yesterday's train to separate some tankers from the power. The crew decided to shove it out of the way in the depot track and with that, spot their power next to the 800 for a few pictures. Even better was the discovery of the nose stripes being painted since yesterday afternoon. After a close up inspection of the work by the crew, they were back on the power and rolling down to the tower train.

The shoot with Jane wasn't planned before I left for Riga, and at first I wasn't sure I would manage. This wasn't the only request I got for a shoot that wasn't planned ahead.... perhaps I should try to stay a day longer next time :-)

In an earlier post this week, I talked about the "unplanned" adventures that we treasure so much in Alaska. That one featured kayaking amongst the glacier and ice formations and caves. I spoke of this one briefly, but I thought that I would share a bit more of the experience through a representative image.

Always having the "bug" in us to experience something new each trip, in 2014 we decided that we wanted to try to cross the Denali Highway for our first time. Now when I say highway ... that conjures up images of 65mph and Exit signs every now and then. Nope, not this "highway", this is, after all, Alaska. This one was nothing but sheer ruggedness ... mostly unpaved, gravel road ... sure potholed in places, but with views that literally took my breath away. Now when traveling east-west (or vice versa) in southern Alaska, the Glenn Highway (a real paved road) has always been our "go to" road and is spectacular as well, but you run across commercialism, more vehicular traffic, the sights already seen by many. The Denali Highway is the proverbial "road less traveled".

For us, we started out our trip across the infamous road in Paxson and were immediately treated with an amazing display of the aurora borealis. Now that is very weather and solar flare dependent, but the darkness of the seclusion around us, made it that much more so intense and rewarding. Just us, the northern lights, and memories of 7 years before ... the day we first saw the lights ... exactly, to the day. The skies were clear with only those beautiful amazing wispy clouds stretched across the sky. Every mile along the 124 mi road was more amazing than the next. Wildlife was at a minimum, as unfortunately it was hunting season. It was just fabulous landscapes and the newness of the adventure.

Things change rather quickly in Alaska and by the time we got 3/4 of the way across, those beautiful blue skies turned gray and rainy. When we got across and ventured into Denali NP, that rain turned into snowfall and we were treated again!

So, as we prepare (5 days left to go) for Alaska, I'm quite anxious for more of what I have grown to love about Alaska - it's spirit of adventure!

Thanks for stopping by to view and especially for sharing your thoughts and comments too.

An unplanned but necessary update to the Minifig.

Another unplanned shot from the road.

I was driving to the south shore of Loch Tulla after shooting the sunrise on Rannoch Moor and this greeted me as I came around the corner.

There was a lot of wind and the beautiful light was quickly turning to drizzle. I didn't have time to find a good place and puzzle on the composition. I quickly got my tripod out and had time to shoot just two panoramas.

As it turns out, this was the last of the interesting light that day. I spend the afternoon walking around, but the low clouds kept me from taking another shot that day.

Totally unplanned, I just happened to be in Tucson the day they towed the freshly-restored F-106 back out for display at the Pima Air and Space Museum. This aircraft has been a longtime favorite of mine, so glad to see it back out on display and stoked to have caught it with the windows before they cover them with protective latex.

Another completely unplanned shot. We were hiking in the "Mars Valley" which has a few very impressive sand dunes. I watched him climb the dune and when he started his descent I snapped this image. I didn't expect him to throw up so much sand when he launched but I like how the sand mirrors the clouds just above him.

Hit "z" twice to count the grains of sand around the subject! ;-)

Adjacent to Irish Pub in Pueblo (Shamrock Brewing Company).

Their Irish Ale is akin to a nectar of the gods. A black buzz in liquid form.

Historic Route 66...

This was one great happening of our unplanned and unintended part of our trip. I wasn't sure what to expect after leaving two incredible places like Sedona and the Grand Canyon. But the day that ensued on this historic route turned out to be a blast. I cannot trade the laughter and fun and time in the car we had together for anything! We must have stopped every 200 yards or so, to get out and snap pictures.

We started here...at this sign. We pulled right up to it, got out of the car and started snapping away at things in every direction. The sky was amazing all throughout the day, with it starting very dreary...moody...signs of the clouds breaking...then sun!!

The shots that follow on Route 66 will be varied. I took all sorts of things ranging from landscapes to macro shots of barbed wire fences...run down buildings to mailboxes on the side of a road. Hours of driving and good times.

What a day!!!

Enjoy!

One of those unplanned road side stops that turn out to be a bit special. Me and my mate had planned a hike the day before but with the weather being a bit "meh" we just ended up visiting a few Snowdonia stops and short walks. Beddgelert was our base for the evening, lovely food and with the long nights we were in bed by 9pm.

In the morning we headed over to Dinorwic and on the drive i spotted Llyn Cwellyn looking mirror like so we had a quick stop and the light was amazing but fleeting. I do have a wider shot of this but really like the trees in the spotlight.

After an unplanned stay in "hotels" called the Royal and Jubilee in Glasgow this is a nice reminder of a happier days. Thank heavens for the wonderful staff in the NHS.

This shot was completely unplanned. My wife and I were actually Christmas shopping in York and walked across Lendal Bridge over the river. I like to think I can spot a good picture but I can't claim any credit for this one. My wife saw the double rainbow, and she also saw the reflection. I have never seen a rainbow so vivid. Ten minutes later, the rain had arrived and the sun never reappeared. The shot had gone, for good.

The photo illustrates the water erosion in unplanned neighbourhoods and its impact on buildings. Residents then try to protect their mud-brick houses with sandbags. The gradual adoption of concrete blocks has shielded many households from these constraints and the most extreme forms of housing insecurity.

Challenging unplanned mini adventure to Purton, heavy dull overcast skies with very flat light made photographing the decaying remains of these aged boats pretty tricky!

The banks of the River Severn have historically suffered from erosion by the tide. Between 1909 and 1965 redundant and unwanted vessels were beached on the foreshore and allowed to fill with silt.

These vessels formed a barrier and helped prevent the river eroding in the adjacent canal embankment. The various working boats now form one of the largest collections of historic inland waterway craft in Britain.

Our visit was unplanned. We had it on our list, but had almost forgotten about it. Suddenly, on the way to another spot, we found out it was only a few kilometres away from our path.

Maybe because of this, our excitement was even greater.

It was a privilege to explore this treasure in all its exuberance. We were in awe of the insane carved compositions, mythical creatures, animals, and human figures, all telling countless stories.

The complex (which was larger, including a monastery) dates from the 11th century and gradually took its final form over the following two centuries.

*

Unplanned juxtaposition.

I took an unplanned drive out to Gros Cap the other day to relax and unwind after a busy day at work. Not a lot was happening that evening, weather and lighting wise, but I was okay with that. I did capture this one long exposure for fun while I was out there, as it's been forever since I last put the Lee Big Stopper to work. It felt great getting out, so hopefully this is the first of many evenings out with the camera.

It seems that while I was shooting the wedding this past Saturday I dislocated and sprained my right knee.

I had thought it was just a pulled muscle (9 hours on feet is not a usual activity for me, so I thought I just over-did it).

But as the pain persisted through Monday I decided to less foolish than usual and went to the clinic.

Four hours and a set of X-Rays later, the doctor let me know just what I did.

Bad timing; I was supposed to go to the water park this weekend, but now I get to rock this splint for another week.

Oh well... at least I got the shot ;)

Hope everyone has had a good day.

My unplanned visit to this local site turned to be very fruitful. This species is very common this year but they generally are not that cooperative. Here a small number of them were flying and settling often in a small area giving me ample photo opportunities. I thus managed to get all the views I want in one place at one time.

Both males and females look the same with wings closed.
