Today's fun fact - Black Swans were presumed not to exist because there was only ever records of white ones. Then when Europeans discovered they did in fact exist, in WA Australia, the phrase "black swan" was coined. The Black Swan by scholar Nassim Taleb, was ranked by the Sunday Times one of the 12 most influential books since World War II. Taleb's black swan theory states that dramatic unexpected events matter more to history than regular happenings.

Bit simpler for me, I just like to photograph them on the local lake. Especially at sunset. Like little floating silhouettes. (bit of an older pic, revisiting some unloved pics from my Flickr exile years)

By the evidence of the criss crossing webs, spiders do though... I am an Arachnophobic and this is the simple truth but when in the woods I just knock them off my arms - how is that ?

Fearless riders of the gale,

In your bleak eyes is the memory

Of sinking ships:

Desire, unsatisfied,

Droops from your wings.

You lie at dusk

In the sea’s ebbing cradles,

Unresponsive to its mood;

Or hover and swoop,

Snatching your food and rising again,

Greedy,

Unthinking.

You veer and steer your callous course,

Unloved of other birds;

And in your soulless cry

Is the mocking echo

Of woman’s weeping in the night.

Florence + the Machine - As Far As I Could Get

In the celestial vaults

I drew bedraggled breaths

Because I am unloved

I went as far as I could get

In the cedars like sparks

Wasting my goddamn time

Past the museum of death

And the mad man yelling answers

I sail on new beginnings

And psychics taking chances

In the cedars like sparks

Wasting my goddamn time

As far as I could get

I went as far as I could get

In the cedars like sparks

Wasting my goddamn time

Past the spires and the temple

Looking like a Disney castle

As far as I could get

Past the girls late for rehearsal

Oh, a pirate on the left

And Jesus on the right

And the Pacific sweeps through

Like a bird in flight

'Cause if I am unloved, I have unloved too

'Cause if I am unloved, I have unloved too

As far as I could get

I went as far as I could get

I went as far as I could get

I went as far as I could get

Past the city and the cement

The cemetery standing still

Past the mountain and the monument

The houses and the hills

Past the signs and the sirens

The sinners and the saints

I went as far as I could get...

Past the hallowed and the horror

The humbled and agreed

I went as far as I could get

'Cause if I am unloved, I have unloved too

As far as I could get

As far as I could get

As far as I could get

And I'm not far enough yet

I went as far as I could get

I went as far as I could get

Looking for signs of hope in a time of pandemic, I see that disregarded, survivor plants are still with us giving some semblance of normalcy. We'll make it through somehow.

Ashlett Creek, Fawley, Hampshire. The present building, replacing earlier tide mills here going back as far as the 13th century, was erected in 1816 and continued in operation until the very early 1900s. Later, it was used by the nearby Esso oil refinery as a social club for its workers, and by the Ashlett Sailing Club as its clubhouse. Now, however, the mill is now abandoned and unloved, its future uncertain.

Time for a PSA to talk about what I post and why. I recently shared some of this on my FB Profile, so thought I’d expound and share it with my Instagram, Flickr and FB Page followers. Some of you may ask, and some have asked, “I see you in Maine, then Colorado, then Florida, then Maine again, some old, some new, what is going on?!?”. I began my journey in photography about 15 years ago. For many years thereafter I did very little with my photos other than share some with family and friends. I didn’t get active with sharing publicly on social media and printing until about 5 years ago, significantly ramping that up when I retired in 2018. At that point I had hundreds, if not thousands of unloved photos waiting for some love. Since then, I have been slowly releasing and sharing my archived photos along with photos current at the time. As you also know, I post my photos slowly over time, usually 2-3 per week, preferring to savor and share individually over time, rotating through the several genres that I enjoy, rather than big dumps. I hope you enjoy my journey!

The call from an adult is a loud "Jay Jay!" this one has a wee little crackled call "Jaaay, Jaaay." We have several juveniles visiting - not sure where they have nested but I finally managed a photograph of this young one. More white around the eyes and the pink at the corner of her beak.

I adore these birds, like Magpies they can be misunderstood or unloved. But Jays mate for life and are incredibly smart. And who doesn't love those blue feathers!

Happy Friday!

Maybe this was the lull during Super Saturday. Remember Super Saturday? It was the day when the Snaefellsnes peninsula was our world and we explored it royally. From mid morning at Grundarfoss until after sunset under an enormous pink swirling cloud at the black church of Budir we stopped here there and everywhere on a day of maximum input and an output that will have me reaching into the archives for months, possibly years to come. I have no less than eighteen separate folders full of RAW files from that finest of days, some of which contain large numbers of images to pore over, while a few, such as the group I took from a layby on the road to Hellnar have just two or three files, little more than handheld snapshots.

By the time we arrived here, we’d already had a very agreeable few hours at the lesser known Svodufoss on the northwest corner of the peninsula, where we’d bathed in autumnal sunshine under the majestic white peak of Snaefellsjokull. We’d paused briefly to photograph the church of Ingjaldsholl in front of the glacier, before sauntering happily along the remote and empty Utnesvegur, passing a discarded landscape of twisted forms. A crater here, a lava field there. For now we were just driving through the landscape, enjoying the privilege of witnessing this extraordinary peninsula. We’d stop at Arnarstapi and photograph the white house again next, we decided. But for a moment we’d take that side road to Hellnar and pause in the layby for a snack, from where we could gaze down at the church we’d abandoned all intentions of photographing twenty-four hours earlier. I’d seen some very agreeable images of the subject in these pages, but from wherever you looked it was surrounded by clutter, and the most compelling pictures I’d found for reference had been simplified by a blanket of snow. Reluctantly we’d agreed that there probably wasn’t a shot here for this trip. I took a couple of snaps with the long lens and duly filed the results, instantly forgetting the episode as we moved on to the next stop where there was an already tried and tested composition to revisit. The lull was over, and the feeding frenzy of Super Saturday had resumed.

It was only much later, in one of those moments when I decided that while I wanted to play around with some shots in the editing suite, I wasn’t in the mood for sifting through a large number of candidates. I wanted simple, and simple didn’t come easier than a folder with only three RAW files, two of which appeared to be almost identical. The shortlisting would take approximately zero seconds. Maybe I could declutter the space around the church? Another monochrome conversion with a bit of contrast would help to simplify the scene, and perhaps there was an image hidden in plain sight that was worth persevering for. Just a quick half hour before I moved away from the computer and did something else with my Sunday afternoon, I thought to myself. And so I started to tinker, gradually removing one distraction after another with varying degrees of success, until the white church stood alone in its space against the quiet ocean. A dodge, a burn or several, a pair of levels and curves adjustments and the shapes of distant mountains somewhere closer to Reykjavik appeared across the water. Now an image that initially offered little promise began to take shape. It still wasn’t one I planned to share – at least not until the moment that I began to rather like what I was looking at. Somehow, an image had evolved from a messy starting point and I was happy.

It makes me wonder what else I’ve got lying around in my saved files; what images are hovering one step away from the dustbin of eternity that might have a hidden promise just waiting to be hatched from chaos. When there are so many fantastic moments still waiting to be captured, it may be a while before any more of the lesser lights appear, but anything is possible. “Never delete anything – just in case,” seems to be the lesson I’ve learned, not that I often do. You never know when you might see something in an unloved snapshot that you overlooked in the first place.

You were riding your bike to the sound of "It's No Big Deal"

And you're trying to lift off the ground on those old two wheels

Nothing about the way that you were treated ever seemed especially alarming 'til now

So you tie up your hair and you smile like it's no big deal

You can let it go

You can throw a party full of everyone you know

And not invite your family, 'cause they never showed you love

You don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up, mmh

Matilda, you talk of the pain like it's all alright

But I know that you feel like a piece of you's dead inside

You showed me a power that is strong enough to bring sun to the darkest days

It's none of my business, but it's just been on my mind

You can let it go

You can throw a party full of everyone you know

And not invite your family, 'cause they never showed you love

You don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up

You can see the world, following the seasons

Anywhere you go, you don't need a reason

'Cause they never showed you love

You don't have to be sorry for doing it on your own

You're just in time, make your tea and your toast

You framed all your posters and dyed your clothes, ooh

You don't have to go

You don't have to go home

Oh, there's a long way to go

I don't believe that time will change your mind

In other words

I know they won't hurt you anymore as long as you can let them go

The old, and unloved bench at the bottom of our garden. I was actually sitting on it thinking what I could use for this weeks subject... How thick must I have been.

Cyber bulling has been around since the beginning of social media and I've been very fortunate to have not been a direct target of it. I have been called many things but never ganged up on and abused by the keyboard warriors and their posses. Nobody should ever be made to feel like they are less than, unwanted, unloved. We are all humans, we all have our own battles and struggles we are fighting. Nobody is better than anyone, we all deserve, love, respect, compassion and I am and will always be here for anyone who needs it. I have two eyes, I see you... I have two ears, I hear you, two arms to embrace and protect you and a heart that is full of love for you.

Barmouth is a seaside town and community in the county of Gwynedd, northwestern Wales, lying on the estuary of the Afon Mawddach and Cardigan Bay. Located in the historic county of Merionethshire, the Welsh form of the name is derived from aber and the river's name, "Mawddach".

Abandoned Boat - River Alde, Aldeburgh, Suffolk

Heading for a brighter future.

By now unoccupied and unloved, the less than salubrious Nelson Subway, constructed in the early 1960s as part of the first Bullring development, never aged particularly well and adopted the downtrodden jaded look of many of the so-called brutalist concrete constructions of that period.

Not long after this shot was taken the subway was closed and demolished to make way for the second Bullring development project in the early 2000s.
