Here’s my first attempt at a portrait composite image. I took me a bit of time to complete and I’m sure there a few mistakes or things I could have done better but it was an accomplishment for me just to get it done considering how long I’ve procrastinated with attempting to create one. The basketball background was included as part of the Dramatic Portrait Compositing video tutorial by Mark Johnson, which I highly recommend obtaining if you would like to learn how to create composites. It’s one of the best and most complete composite video tutorials I’ve viewed so far.
Here's Tajai trying to show his angry bird intensity, though it took a couple shots of him laughing before we got this shot :-)

a pretty entertaining thriller I discovered through Facebook ads of all places - advertised as "the dog doesn't die in the end" - well a cat a bunch of people do die...
Darn clouds were in the way!
And to think about history when around 1750's Ben Franklin thought up the idea of a lightning rod to protect people and buildings, and things grew from there! No way in hell would I want to test that theory!
Fast moving storm with some amazing lightning that was happening all over the place. I'd watch one area and it would flash in other areas, back & forth so fast I couldn't keep up. I just picked a spot from my front porch and tried to catch something.
*Lightly photoshopped: cropped, darkened exposure and adjusted color warmth hue.

How to:
(I'm not good at explaining/teaching so I'll keep it short & easy as possible)
What I have learned by trial and lots of errors.......
Out of 400 hundred shots, maybe 4 to 6 will turn out something. Thank goodness for digital!!
You need patience and enough time to sit with the storm. Maybe an hour or longer.
Just when you get bored, tired, and want to pack it in.....wait! At the end of it all will be the best freaking streaker in the sky, like it said haahhaaa fooled you - you missed, aaww too bad about your luck!
Tips (if anyone else has better tips, ideas or tricks - please add them!)
I've only been trying this for two years so far and I've only gotten to catch a few goodies. But where I live, the storms are not as intense. Plus, I have tons of trees in my neighborhood that blocks my view.
*If you have the accessory such as the trigger release (aka - trigger remote, cable release, shutter cable) that is used to control the shutter it makes it easier, so you don't have to keep your finger up on the camera's button to take every picture.
1. Use a wide angle lens 18mm seems like the standard on most lens.
2. Set all you camera's settings to MANUAL (focus your lens to infinity for distance, or just back in off slightly which ever seems the most crisp for your lens). You don't want to have the camera auto focus in the middle of the shots, so make sure to turn off auto focus on your lens. When it's dark out it's hard for the camera to find something to focus on anyways.
3. Set camera to BULB mode (to use for long exposures).
You will have to control how long you leave the shutter open.
Fairly quick for about 2 or 3 seconds..
Count in your head, such as: (one-one thousand) or (one-one thousand, two-one thousand).
The longer you leave the shutter open lets in more light, which can let in too much light and blows out everything.
NOTE: you can use other setting(s) like 1/30th of a second, or maybe 1/60th of a second for quick open/close of the shutter. You can then click like crazy and hope you catch more strikes if there is a lot of action in the sky. You may have to adjust the F/stop somewhat also for the intensity of the light. Hint, try test shots inbetween lighting strikes.
**Don't set the camera to use the set timed exposure such as the 2" second to longer because the camera will use that setting and just stay open that length of time. You can't do anything while the camera sits there with the shutter open while all the lighting dances across the sky and lets in way too much light.
2. Set ISO 100 or Lo 0.3 (for brightness of the lightning).
3. F/stop: F/4, or - F/5.6. I've tried a few others such as F/8 or F/11 and they haven't worked great for me, but maybe I didn't adjust all the other settings to match.
4. White Balance - I've only experimented a little with these features and each one looks different. I'm not sure it really matters much.
*Incandescent seems darker hues blacks/blues.
*Fluorescent / Dayling or day white added some pink/blue hue
Then.....
-Put your camera on a tripod or something sturdy that angles the lens in the direction of the storm.
-Sit in a chair or on something because you might have to sit for about an hour during the storm's activing and show. Make sure the camera stays dry! I sit on my porch, so there's a roof. If you are lucky to have the storm off in the distance and no rain - no problem.

I am talking about a true appreciation and connection with what is around you – truly feeling present in the moment you are alive in – this moment of your time.
I am not speaking about the attribution of why or how things have been created, but that they ARE. It is not about where you are going after this life, but truly experiencing where you are right now. This is not in conflict with any religion; in fact it plays a major role in most of them. It is the act of truly appreciating what is given.
I find, I enter this space most often in wild nature. Places deep inside open to connections I don’t have to forge with thought. If you open to feeling these connections, I believe you feel a deeper understanding of being alive than in any other way. It is your heritage. It is your nature, or whatever you call them.
Here I unleash the view, which has captured my mind for so long. I have been wandering in these valleys for lifetime in my dreams. Here at this very day, I share with you, the piece of myself. I unleash a rear view of Hunza & Nagar.
Taken: On 14th of August (Independence Day) while walking around Melishkar (among the highest village, far above Altit), Central Hunza. From here you can have a glimpse of these mighty wonderful peaks. You can also continue your trek upwards to Ultar glacier from here.

It's been a while since I've posted anything from Unleash the Villains at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This was my first, and certainly not the last time, shooting fireworks from Hollywood Studios. The crowds were insane, and without a 9' tripod, heads were inevitably going to be in the way from where I was standing. That, coupled with the extremely humid air and strong wind that was blowing everything back our way made for a very difficult fireworks shot.
If I remember too, I ended up just randomly opening and closing my remote shutter and just enjoying this show "in person". Stunning show, really. Can't wait for the next opportunity!
Tomorrow is the start of PhotoMagic 2013. Can't wait to see everyone here. Safe travels!

There were some beautiful cloud formations all day yesterday. It was the first day that it hadn't rained in what seemed to me as a couple of weeks or more (some of the thunderstorms have been severe). Near sunset, having sprayed my shoes and pant legs with mosquito/tick repellent, I waded through waist high grass at the side of the road and then slogged through a muddy, stubbled-filled corn field carrying my tripod. I intended to bracket shots to obtain a set of three shots for creating HDR images (an underexposed, normal and overexposed shot of each scene) using Photomatrix Pro that I had downloaded the night before.
Arriving at the other side field, I stopped at a barbwire fence to set up the tripod. However, the little mounting platform that screws into the base of the camera was not on the tripod! I looked at the base of the camera--and it wasn't there either. Then, because I was wearing the same blue jeans that I had worn on my last jaunt across the cornfield, I checked my jean pockets... but nothing there, either. Mildly irritated and berating myself, I took all of my shots without a tripod and I did not attempt to bracket the shots. I did use the tripod to some advantage, however. It helped beat down some tall weeds next to the barbed wire fence where I was shooting. :D
HDR would have been wonderful to use for these sunset shots. It was one of those intense sunsets, lighting up a heavy cloud formation in every direction and sending rays of light beaming out across the sky.
Before it began growing dark, I walked back through the cornfield towards the house. Along the way, I noticed something moving off to my left. It was a beautiful skunk--running along the same direction as me. It seemed to be keeping an eye on me but neither of us seemed threatened by the presence of the other. Once far enough ahead of me, it turned and crossed my path and headed down the hill, finally disappearing in the distance. The thought had crossed my mind to try to takes some pictures of it... but it was dark enough that it probably wasn't worth the effort.

I don't know why but my colors seem a little bit blackish and blueish than my original photo.

This image is all about trying something new. Aesthetically it shows me ripping through my safety zone. I find it very easy to turn an image black and white because I feel more secure without colour. I never think about colour as part of my image and assume if it doesn't work out I'll simply desaturate it. I want to take advantage of this 365 to learn and explore new aspects of photography.
This image is inspired by Rankin, one of my all time favourite photographers. I was asked the other day who inspires me and I'd say the top 5 are Rankin, Tim Walker (who I've had the amazing experience of meeting!), Lara Jade, Brooke Shaden and the classic Henri Cartier-bresson. Quite a range of styles!
Hope you've all had a lovely Sunday, I'm now off to work :(
