Kotahitanga means unity, and Kotahitanga movements aim to unify Māori on non-tribal grounds. Some have been religious, while others focused on political power, protest or social issues.

Ballade No. 1 In G Minor, Op. 23 by Chopin
scene II
After hours of wondering each other we have escaped to other spheres. No time limits our exploring and there is no existing flesh that matters. Sweet sonnets are playing quietly and there is only white sheet between us as we rest side by side.
The music stops playing and I get up from the bed. You take my hand in yours while you are still laying naked on the bed and kiss it lightly. Electricity, I still feel it. I walk to the shelf and push the play. Randomly it starts playing again and I come back to you. You pull me close to you and hold near. We swing together to the music and your hands warm me as the room is feeling chilly. In my heart I know that you have bewitched my heart, but only because I let you. You have bound yourself to me eternally as I am part of you now. It's a unity of lovers.

Taken over at the stunning Blenheim Palace grounds, this pair of swans seemed to have a large swathe of water to themselves whilst they napped in the shade together, almost in an entirely symmetrical fashion.
These have been the only two of any birds/animal species we've seen here that have shown any interest in each other. They're the common gallinule, a bird in the family Rallidae. It was split from the common moorhen by the American Ornithologists' Union in July 2011. It lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals, and other wetlands in the Americas. The species is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests. Wikipedia
Scientific name: Gallinula galeata
Phylum: Chordata
Higher classification: Moorhen

At this very challenging point in our lives, I hope we can take a moment to count our blessings, let our loved ones know how much they mean to us, observe and practice everything the experts are telling us, and keep a positive attitude despite the obvious concerns.
Take care of yourselves and of each other!
What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined - to strengthen each other - to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable memories.
-- George Eliot

The Wabash turn emerges from the trestle at Harbor Draw into winter golden hour lighting, splitting the single ground searchlights unique to this area as they head for Canada to interchange with CN. The setup on the island is certainly a fascinating one. The signal on the right is used for bridge protection against openings of the swing span bridge. Typically the only indications observed are stop or clear. Another signal is in place on the opposite side of the bridge for this same purpose. In fact, my very first post on Flickr was from that side of the bridge, which I'll link further below. The signal on the left however actually gives an indication for the track ahead going into Fort Erie, which may be approach or clear depending on the routing. The setup here is unique in the fact that throughout my various treks around Canada, I have never observed another set of searchlights this close to the ground. This is the southernmost tip of the CN Stamford Sub, extending less than a mile across the border before meeting up with CSX at CP 7 on the Niagara Branch. That little tidbit becomes all the more important, because these signals are the only set of active US&S searchlights in the western half of New York State. (GRS SA style searchlights from the NYC era would be a different story.) Thanks to CN, these are still in place and serving today.
While this photo dates back to my first year behind the camera, I had actually found myself on the island within the first month of having a camera, for a CMQ-led CP 246, nowadays known as 236 after CP's mass-resymboling project. Back then I don't think I had a proper appreciation for these signals, maybe just because of the peculiar placement of them. Searchlights have always been my favorite style of signal, but growing up I was more accustomed to the GRS SA style used by the Central, carrying over into the Conrail days, and ending with CSX in the late 2010s. Although I was familiar with the appearance of this style, I didn't get to shoot a proper set of these until a couple trips down to the Bessemer & Lake Erie in summer of 2021. Then again later in the year, on a few trips to Canada amid Covid-related border restrictions. My efforts on those trips were primarily focused on shooting these signals. Only after all of that did it finally click with me how significant the installation on Unity Island is.
With the knowledge that CN will be looking to overhaul and replace the aging searchlights across Ontario in the next couple years, I have to wonder how soon they'll get to these. Between CN and CP, plus one from NS, up to 10 trains a day will cross this island and its two bridges. Maybe that's still small enough of a number to stay under the radar for now.

“The mountains were his masters. They rimmed in life. They were the cup of reality, beyond growth, beyond struggle and death. They were his absolute unity in the midst of eternal change.” ~ Thomas Wolfe
A dreary spring day in the Tetons...still beats any day in the Midwest :-) Not sure what the yellow ground cover was, but it provided a nice splash of color against those dark skies. One week from today we will be be enjoying some glorious mountain views in Glacier....can't wait to get there!!!! Lost my position at work today thanks to good old union bumping rights, but fortunately for me, I had another position to take; not exactly what I want to do, but in this day and age, I have to be thankful for even having a job :-) Have a great Friday, and as always, thanks for your visits and support. I will catch up with everyone soon.
