The New Jersey Army and Air National Guard celebrated Unity Day on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at the National Guard's Joint Training and Training Development Center at Fort Dix, New Jersey. This year's observance kicked off with a 5K Fun Walk/Run followed by official ceremonies.
The New Jersey National Guard was the first state militia in the country to desegregate. In April of 1930, with the full support and encouragement of then Governor Alfred Driscoll, the State Legislature took the unprecedented step of approving the formation of the First Separate Battalion, New Jersey Army National Guard. Even though these actions were in apparent violation of federal law, the state appropriated funds for the organization of this battalion. In July of 1931, 63 members of Company A of New Jersey's newest unit were mustered-in at an old movie theater in Newark, New Jersey.

Almost 200 volunteers from all over Eastern Michigan University and the Ypsilanti community came to dedicate their time and efforts to paint 300 square feet of canvas. The “Unity Mural” is meant to represent the timeline of EMU and Ypsilanti divided into three sections: past activism, present, and future ambitions. On Feb. 11, Bowen field house was transformed into a painting workshop with about 24 long tables divided into four rows. Each table had a piece of the canvas mural with a colorless picture already drawn on. Painter volunteers were provided a picture of the finished product and applied paint according to a color key. The project was first introduced and planned by the EMU Unity Mural Collaboration, a student-led project supported by EMU faculty, administration, and community organizations in the wake of the racist graffiti found on an outside wall of King Hall during the Fall 2016 semester. The finished mural was installed in the McKenny hall student lounge area over winter break for the public.

Unity in Diversity – That is what we can say about India. India is a country with 28 states. Each and every state has different languages, different traditions, different cultures, different food and different festivals. So, this is a country full of diversities. In spite of so many differences, India works together when it comes for national interests. India’s success has shown the world what can happen if people of different backgrounds, cultures, languages and traditions unite towards a common goal.
The collage above is of India’s Independence Day celebration by a group of children of different states now staying abroad with their parents (I am glad to say that most of the parents are IBMers only). As you can see the children are wearing different traditional costumes and performing with songs in their regional languages. Each and every performance was of different flavor as they come from different parts of the Country imparting a sense of Unity in Diversity. This program was really a huge success.
