On January 25 an exhibition of photos by well-known Belarusian photographer Anatoly Kleschuk “My Righteous” opened in the Minsk City History Museum. The exhibition of 58 black and white photos is exploring the theme of Belarusians who risked their lives and their families to rescue Jews during the Holocaust on Belarusian territory.
The exhibition organized on the UN Office in Belarus initiative is dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution on 1 November 2005
The opening ceremony was attended by Victor Radivinovski, DPI Officer-in-Charge, Josef Shagal, Ambassador of Israel to Belarus, and photographer Anatoly Kleschuk. The son of Maria Moiseenko, who helped to save Jews during the WWII, was awarded with a Medal and a Certificate conferring the title of the Righteous among the Nations.
Speaking at the ceremony the DPI Officer-in-Charge Victor Radivinovski said: “The exhibition "My righteous" reflects the theme of ordinary, modest Belarusians, who did not consider themselves as heroes but thanks to the personal courage of whom a significant number of 30,000 Belarusian Jews survived during the World War II”.
During World War II in Belarus the Nazis killed more than 800,000 Jews. The Minsk Ghetto, the largest in Eastern Europe, housed close to 100,000 Jews, most of whom perished in the Holocaust.
As of 1 January 2012 the title Righteous among the Nations was awarded to 569 Belarusians (8th nation in the world), whereas a total of 24,356 people in the world got this title.

The unique selling point here is a memorable medieval screen that totally overwhelms this modest, simple church, it is claimed that the screen came from nearby Cymer Abbey but there is no documentary evidence to support this story. However it is quite clear that this screen is not native to the church, the chancel side of the screen is much more elaborate than the nave side, leading one to presume it must have come from a much more significant monastic building, where the intricate detail would be seen by clerics. The screen is one of the finest in Wales, the only one I’ve seen that could compare is at Patrishow in Powys. The church had an extended restoration in the 19th C, starting in the 1840’s under Henry Kennedy, followed by R K Penson and finishing with E B Ferrey in 1876.
For other features there is some rather lurid glass by Ward & Hughes, some fine monuments, shoehorned into the tiny chancel to the Owen family and a well weathered font from the 12th C. This is one not to be missed, under any circumstances.

This image of the Unique Mill in Friendsville, Maryland was taken during the presentation of a Heritage Fund grant by Preservation Maryland in August of 2018. According to friendsville.org/historytour/?page_id=364 (as of 1/22/2019): This mill was built in 1889 to be an electric grain mill. The mill closed in the early 1960s.
