Stepped away from photoshop and social media for a few months...... just needed a break.
This is my new client, Abita. She's a Sphinx cat which is just another name for hairless. She is absolutely full of personality!! I LOVE HER! She is one of the most unique cats I sit for. She lives with another Sphinx called Nola. You'll be seeing her too! Although Nola is much harder to get a good shot of because she rarely stops moving! Abita on the other hand plants herself in a spot and never moves!!! LOL!
I can't wait to go back to this house in November.
There wasn't a heck of a lot of light in this room. You can tell by her pupils. So I placed the camera on the floor and used it as a tripod.

This is Ferrari the cat (Ari for short), who is my little buddy. He's one of those unique cats with a personality a little more like a dog's, and he is an extremely confident little animal. He was perched on the back of a love seat, looking longingly out the window (wishing it were spring and not -20 C outside!), and the light was special. I grabbed a camera and hoped he would stay posed. It took a little work, but I was able to recapture the light, and I really loved the end result. While it is no longer new, I continue to think that the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 is a very special lens for the money. If you missed my coverage of it, you can find it here:

This bird is a resident at Miami MetroZoo Wings of Asia Aviary. (Ailuroedus buccoides) The White-eared Catbird is found in Papua New Guinea and is common in the lowland rainforests. It is a large aggressive species, and though in the bowerbird family, it neither builds a bower not has an elaborate display. The name is derived from it's unique cat like hissing call. Conservation status is believed to be least concern. This is my first photo capture of this bird. I'm having a lot of fun collecting photos of the 72 species in the aviary.

This girl is a Sphynx. I think they are an easily misunderstood breed. I was quite taken aback when I first learnt of them too. The unconventional almost furless and intimidating look were very shocking. But these unique cats had found a way into my heart. I touched one during the recent cat show and the skin felt like suede. It was quite magical and most enlightening. :)
This one was especially tender. I put my finger between the cage (bottom left of the photo!) and she came nuzzling at it. The zero aggression was a pleasant surprise considering how stressful she must had been in such a noisy and crowded venue during the show.
Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis)
This caterpillar was found at Splinter Hill by a friend of mine, Ashley, and she felt the need to take it home and raise it to protect it from predators. She met up with me today to let me photograph this very unique cat... Thank you, Ashley...
for the "30 secrets in 30 days" group: it's not a secret that i have some trouble getting to sleep. the funny thing is that when it's finally time to sleep, i have the unique cat-like ability to let myself fall asleep just about anywhere. during parties in college if a bunch of us were crashing somewhere and there was nowhere else to sleep, i would just lay down on the linoleum floor and snooze. i have also fallen asleep for the night curled up in a wooden chair, and i have taken a nap under a desk.
one of my favorite ways to fall asleep is in a direct beam of sunlight. i often find it more soothing than falling alseep in the dark...

At this stage you've probably figured out that I'm fond of putting a bit of a story behind my images now. Some of you probably start scrolling down and groan at how much more text there is to get through, saying to yourselves 'f*ck that, I'm not reading all this!' and head off somewhere else in Flickrland. And that's OK! So I'll give you a heads-up now...this is going to be a long one.
I've been conscious since launching on my whole Flickr adventure that the majority of you aren't aware of my first love, which is surfing. Whilst images of Moons, feathers, flowers, and sunrises might be appealing to me and to you in the Flickr Universe, seldom have I posted photo's covering this aspect of my interest.
So, This is Alex Knost.
Most of you won't know him, so I'll give you a bit of an introduction, and put this image, which will be the first in a series of images, into context.
Alex is Alex. There is nobody like him in the surfing world. He ploughs his own furrow, has his own style, speaks his own mind, is in his own groove, but all carried out with a delicate touch; a finesse. In surfing terms, the phrase 'often copied, never equaled' fits perfectly with what it is that sets him apart from the chaff in a seemingly ceaseless expansion of what could be loosely regarded as the global surfing community.
A few years ago, surfing was all I ever did. I lived and breathed it, hoovering it up like a line of cocaine, feeding my addiction whenever I could. Then it all reached a crescendo, and that stopped. The crescendo was attending the World Surfing Games in Peru in October 2010, representing first and foremost, the people who got me there; the community behind the LongboardIreland.com forum who paid for my trip over, and my country a very close second. I gave a poor account of myself in the water, but felt I gave a good account of myself, the community who got me there, and my country, when I was on land.
Looking back, now, and even shortly afterwards, I knew my surfing, at least the kind of surfing I was doing up to that point, was in certain respects, over. I drifted for months afterwards, neglecting my surfing and my love of the Sea, because I felt lost. I had returned home from the complete and utter high of that experience and the surreal way in which the whole sponsorship thing kicked off and gathered momentum, completely disillusioned with something I thought I believed in, and used to champion - progressive longboarding.
In Peru, I watched some of the best progressive longboarders in the world compete against each other. And I was bored. In free-surf sessions outside of the competition there were a handful of guys styling it, James Parry from the UK being one of them, but during the heats, everyone was just doing the same thing, surfing to a format the judges wanted to see so they could tick a box and allocate points, with very little style, and little evidence of the heritage from which this approach to wave-riding is drawn from. I know style when I see it, and I knew then as I do now that I didn't have it, or what I had was ugly, but for some reason, it won me competitions, got me on to the Irish team, got me to Peru.
Fast-forward 2 years and I haven't surfed a progressive longboard since, nor have I any desire to. If the best progressive longboarders in the world couldn't impress me during a competition, then what is the point in trying to aspire to rub shoulders with them any longer? So all I surfed was a heavy single-fin log for 2 years straight, in anything and everything, irrespective of how big the surf was, adding another beautiful one to my quiver along the way, inspired by a board dreamed-up by another unique cat called Miki Dora - but you could write a book on him alone. A few already have, and they're worth checking out.
Rewind 6 months, and the day before I'm due to hop on a ferry to France for a three week holiday, the relationship to the girl I've been going out with for 6 years, two of which were spent engaged, falls apart. My main reason for going was that I felt I needed to re-ground myself in what it is that makes longboarding what it is - style. 16 of the most stylish contemporary longboarders were gathering for a competition in Biarritz in the South West of France, brought together by a living surfing icon, Joel Tudor. The format was simple; heavy, single-fin longboards, no leash, style wins. If there was one single event that was going to reinvigorate my love of longboarding, I believed this was going to be it. I had also been shooting with Polaroid cameras for over a year at that stage and felt compelled to capture the people, the boards, and the event, analoglly (yeah I just made that word up).
I shot and shot and shot and shot, burning through packs of film like I was some sort of wealthy tycoon with a big 50'er in the harbour in Monaco, because this film ain’t cheap. We’re talking €3-4 per photo. After the first day of the competition I looked at the box carrying the packs of film I'd brought and thought 'f*ck, I should have brought more film.'
When I returned home to Ireland from France, I came back refreshed, invigorated, relaxed, but back to a very different world to the one I had left. An empty house. No fiancée. No one to talk to other than my faithful pooch Charlie. Nothingness. Emptiness.
The fact that I'd had the two aforementioned longboards stolen from my car two weeks into the trip along with another magic board I had recently gotten shaped didn't help matters.
My family rallied around me and did everything they could to help me through, but still my mood dropped, and with it my interest in my photography and the images I had taken during my trip. I knew that I should have scanned them as soon I got home. I knew that if I sent a few to some select magazines that I read that cover this approach to longboarding that one of them would bite, and if they did, I'd at least have made a start on moving how I earn a living from what I do now to earning it the way I would like to.
But I didn't.
They sat in a box, month after month, tormenting me each time I passed them, mocking me by serving as a stark reminder of my inability to pull my head out of my ass and get on with my life. Colours shifting over time as the chemicals in the image react to the temperature changes in my house, the humidity. Soft whites turning yellow, blacks turning a muddy brown.
Six months later, I’m back, but I’m different. Good different.
So, This is Alex Knost.

I photographed this fascinating cat for a piece i was writing on National Desexing month in Victoria. This cat stood out due to it's incredible blue eye and how it also had differing eye colours.

I created this fun and unique Cat in the Hat quilt to celebrate the 100 year birthday of Dr. Seuss (Ted Geisel, born 2 March 1904) and his contributions to American literature to make reading fun and accessible to kids of all ages. Donated to benefit the Reach Out and Read program at Inova Fairfax (VA) Hospital for Children, which makes new books and love of reading an important part of healthy childhood for low-income children in Fairfax County VA. Handquilted and 100% cotton so washable too (mild detergent). Completed 24 Feb. 2004. Quilts warm the body . . . and the soul! I hope you enjoy your quilt as much as I enjoyed creating it!

She is the most charming and unique cat i have ever met. At birth Dolce came out with semi paretic face but she is doing just fine. If it wasn´t for this she would be a champion as her sisters and brothers.

In January 2020, I made a return trip to the Eden Shores development, an area I photographed in 2010 and 2011. Eden Shores is a relatively new housing development that was enabled by the construction of a substantial, highway-grade bridge over the main East Bay railroad line. It presents as a herniation of development intruding into what were, other than old salt works, previously undeveloped baylands. It makes for an interesting visual contrast with the surrounding wildlife refuge and a cautionary example of how willing developers are to build at or very near current day sea level. Eden Shores features a rather unique “cat moat” along its western edge. As I understand it, this was designed to serve as a barrier separating domestic animals from the wildlife refuge.
Since I photographed there a decade ago, Eden Shores has been joined along the bayland edge by a rather large FEDEX distribution center. The Bay Trail winds past this facility before turning into the housing development. I am photographically drawn to what I think are a set of fallow duck hunting ponds immediately west of Eden Shores and its cat moat. The seasonal ebb and flow of rainwater in this area seems to create a lively set of colors and textures from the ground surface there, aided no doubt by residual salt in the soil.
I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. Kite flying is prohibited over the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve without a Special Use Permit.

Eden Shores features a rather unique “cat moat” along its western edge. As I understand it, this was designed to serve as a barrier separating domestic animals from the wildlife refuge.
Between Eden Shores and the Mt. Eden Creek marsh parcels to its west lies a strip of former marshland with what appear to be the remnants of shallow duck hunting ponds from a previous era. The water in these disused ponds displays bright colors in the dry season – evidence methinks of residual salt from the Baumberg Salt Works. This makes for some visually striking ground textures, so I always enjoy photographing here.
I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. Kite flying is prohibited over the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve without a Special Use Permit.

Mavis, also known as "Derpy" or "Derpy Paws" is a truly unique cat. Born with a birth defect, one of her paws is significantly crooked, causing a limp when she walks around. But that problem won't come close to slowing down this cat. I am certain she would explore the world if we let her out. She lives for those moments where she makes it out the door and can sniff around the back yard. She's explored every inch of our home, finding some interesting sleeping spots like the one in the picture. She's afraid of nothing, even with her derpy paw. After a day of exploring, she likes to curl up in front of the fan or space heater (depending on the weather), lick her belly while purring loudly, and then fall asleep fully stretched out. She is definitely the most adorable legislative cat.
In January 2020, I made a return trip to the Eden Shores development, an area I photographed in 2010 and 2011. Eden Shores is a relatively new housing development that was enabled by the construction of a substantial, highway-grade bridge over the main East Bay railroad line. It presents as a herniation of development intruding into what were, other than old salt works, previously undeveloped baylands. It makes for an interesting visual contrast with the surrounding wildlife refuge and a cautionary example of how willing developers are to build at or very near current day sea level. Since I photographed there a decade ago, Eden Shores has been joined along the bayland edge by a rather large FEDEX distribution center. The Bay Trail winds past this facility before turning into the housing development. I am photographically drawn to what I think are a set of fallow duck hunting ponds immediately west of Eden Shores and its cat moat. The seasonal ebb and flow of rainwater in this area seems to create a lively set of colors and textures from the ground surface there, aided no doubt by residual salt in the soil.

My cat and his GIANT paws. His paws are huge because he has arthritis. He's on medication now, and is like a kitten again :) He's around 12 and jumps on my lap and purs and plays with bits of string, and he hasn't done any of that since he was a kitten.
This photo is so dark, I couldn't use flash because it hurts him too much, he has a problem with his eyes, one eye takes in too much light so his sight isnt as good, BUT he has 2 different coloured eyes now, and it doesnt seem to bother him. Such a unique cat haha
Beautiful tabby boy, I'm quite sure he'll be the father of the other sweet tabby girl's babies. We saw them not far away and they were the unique cats we saw in the medieval town - Óbidos (Portugal).

While I was strolling in the Garden District in New Orleans, I unwittingly saw this cat on a yard of a mansion. The cat was climbing up on my knee several times when I knelt down and tried to get a snapshot of him. By the way, the cat was calm and unafraid of strangers. I was glad to see this unique cat.

We've been a bit busy with gigs this Easter.
I'll catch up with you all on my return.
This was Guin's first trip with us while we have been working away.
We had a few tears the first hour, but as you can see, Shogi helped her along and as soon as he knew she was ok , Shogi went to his usual spot on the parcel shelf above Greg's head!
Guin has attracted a few fans already.
They were both with us in Suffolk, Essex and Great Yarmouth.
Now we're heading up to Sunderland then Scotland.
One of the Scotland gigs is a fundraiser for cats protection so I know they will both go down well there.
I used to have cat sitters when we worked away, but after my experience with Charlie, I said
"NEVER AGAIN!!!"
Charlie my wonderful cat who many of you got to know on here was looked after by cat sitters, 2 who I wasn't happy with and the 3rd was a girl on our street who offered as we were friends with the family.
She was great for a while and we paid her well, but when we were away for 3 days her mum was waiting for us on our return,
She asked how Charlie was? We said we'd only just arrived home why?
The mother said her daughter hadn't been as she didn't want to do it any more!!!!!!!!!!
She'd left Charlie with no food or water for 3 and a half days!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I asked her why she never called and the mother had our door key.
We gave money to her daughter to top up her phone just in case she needed us.
We would have come home if there was a problem.
The mother said she hadn't time for things like that and I asked for my key back.
Greg ran in the house to see Charlie and of course he was in a state of collapse and the house was a mess as the litter trays hadn't been cleaned.
Charlie was 13yrs old at the time and we rushed him to the vet.
Of course he was severely dehydrated which had affected his kidneys.
He was put on a course of antibiotics as he'd become very run down and stressed but of course he had gone too far to recover and had to be put down a few months later.
I know a few of you have asked me what happened to Charlie and I've found it too painful to talk about.
Especiallay as I loved him so dearly and he was such a unique cat. There will never be another one like Charlie.
I also have gone through self blame. Still do.
If I had never asked her to look after him, He'd still be here and I still feel it's my fault.
The poor little fella must have gone through so much while we were away and I didn't know and had this happened before?
Charlie's last months of life, if we worked away, he came with us and boy do I wish I'd done that before as he was great in the van and loved the walks on a lead especially in a forest.
So now I take my cats with me any time we're away.
I know they are safe and loved while they are with me and are being fed properly.
They will be coming on holiday with us as we rent a place who accepts pets!
Please let that be a lesson to anyone who gets a cat sitter.
Make sure you know them well enough not to let you down.
In my case even a "Friend" I didn't think would ever do such a thing, especially as they have several pets of their own and i would have thought understood!!!
Even make sure they are a registered cat sitter or family.
I see this girl nearly every day as she still lives on our street.
It's a constant reminder and it's very painfull.
I've had no apology.
I'd just like to add at this point I don't speak to her any more.
I didn't take any action as I blamed myself.
We've got a pair of unique cats. They are two bionic robots, arrived from the distant future. They are of such an advanced, sophisticated design, that you couldn't tell them from, say, an identical pair of the 'real', 'contemporary', 'biological' ones. But once in a while they still need to be recharged. To see if they've received enough 'juice' to run for the next week, they have indicators in their eyes.
It seems 'Monya' (on the left) is already showing 'green' ('OK') and 'Misha' (on the right) still needs a couple of hours of relatively calm repose by the power outlet. They are great fun, - and very cost efficient :)

George is definitely proving herself to be a unique cat. Not only does she hide herself in here, but she also enjoys drinking from the toilet and sitting in the sink while 'helping' my husband shave in the morning. Cats...

Patches came into ADOPT pet shelter in Naperville, IL through our spay/neuter program from an outside organization today and was just so unique looking that I had to take some pictures.
Maybe her name came from her appearance after her shave -many long-haired animals who've lived as strays for awhile or that've been neglected at home end up needing to be shaved when they reach a rescue because of severe matting that can dig into their skin and cause some nasty infections. -Patches' shave job was quite jagged and, well, patchy but I think that along with her smushed in face, it added to her charm!
She's an amazingly sweet cat -as I took these pictures she was rubbing all over my hand, arm, and face and she totally won me over. Sometimes it's tough seeing these animals come and go in one day when you find personalities as unique as Patches' -I hope she finds a nice rescue organization or home soon. I would have taken her myself if I could. What a unique cat!
