Laney @danceswithpenguins is such a pleasant surprise in my journey called life. Several months ago I was down in Moab at an acrojam that was hosted by Michelle @chelleslacks. As I was about to leave a woman at the Jam either approached me or was introduced to me by Michelle and said something like "Your Eric Ward, as in the photographer". I was surprised and said yes and then ask her if she wanted to do a hand to hand since I was kind of a lose for words. We held a solid 8 - 10 second hand to hand and then I promptly left the event. While I was experiencing astoundment for Laney's refined acro abilities, I was also feeling other emotions I wanted to process in seclusion

on the drive back to Provo.

Looking back I can see that I did feel some dis-ease having someone I had never met know something about me and how on some levels how vulnerable that made me feel since I have always prided myself in being a behind the scenes ninja and not necessarily being recognized or recognizable unless somehow I felt like I was in "control" of what parts of myself were going to be shared / presented. So thank you for bringing these feelings and awareness up for me Laney.

After several more times down to Moab in the last few months I've made it a point to reach out and see if Laney wanted to acro or adventure when I'm in the area. The more conversations and play I have with her the more of a gem I'm seeing she is. Between her infectious laughing during acro, her commitment to self development and self awareness, music skills on the ukulele, and integrating more movement activities into her life; I've become a big fan.

When I saw her juggling before we started to acro, I couldn't help but think of some of Ido Portal's comments and concepts I've come across recently on being a generalist and the different zones we go through as we learn something new in movement or any other practice and embracing chaos during the process. So I ask Laney if she had ever acro'ed and juggled at the same time. She had not and this video is what her first attempt at it looks like. Mind you I was doing my best to introduce "chaos" into the moment to see how well her body and mind would adapt. Kudos again Laney.

Below are a few brief descriptions of the 3 zones Ido talks about and how keeping yourself in zones 1 and zone 2 with new movement and activities is a great way to continue to build your mind too.

Zone 1: Exploring

At this zone, you are exposed to something new, something you have no idea about – you’re exploring a new idea, new methodology, new movement, or new solution. Our brain has no memory with the routine at this stage, and we’re going to be suck at it – for now.

Zone 2: Perfecting

Once we get over zone 1 – after spending enough hours to explore and learn the patterns of anything – we’re getting into zone 2, perfecting. At this zone, we start to have a grip on the new skill we’re learning, and we’re not beginners anymore here.

Zone 3: Maintaining

In this zone, it’s more of a keep-doing-it repeatedly than learning. We knew what exactly the routine is, it’s not a new thing or skill anymore. In fact, it’s something old and we used to.

I've also included some links for more details about Ido's ideas and the resources I utilized. The best way to copy these links is to click on the three dots above the video on Instagram and select "Copy Share URL" and then open this post in a browser and copy and paste the links from there. Or you can search youtube for minutemanacro and the links will be provided in my post there.
