The resident female Hedgehog was out foraging in the garden just after dawn today, but could not be tempted with a bowl of water or dried food pellets. She was found grossly underweight earlier this year and taken to a local animal shelter where she was brought up to a proper weight before being released back into the garden.
Fascinating facts about Hedgehogs: a group of hedgehogs is called an 'array’; a hedgehog has between 5,000 and 7,000 quills; there are 17 different species of hedgehog; and hedgehogs have poor eyesight, so rely predominantly on their smell and hearing to navigate.
Meet Lillian, I picked her up from the local shelter after Romeos passing, she had been abused and very underweight, it has taken a while for her to trust anyone, she now is in her happy forever home with us and has become best friends with our other cat Ty.
This doe comes around my home every now and then, she is well underweight, not sure if it’s due to age, but she will get close to me if I toss out apples to her.
This year's Autumn Watch highlighted the plight of our Western Hedgehog whose numbers have plummeted year on year in the past few years. During the same week this young female was wandering about during the daytime looking disorientated. I took her to our local centre to be checked where it was deemed that she was underweight and dehydrated. Mortality is c60-70% during the first year of life due mainly to starvation whilst hibernating. Without help from the centre it is unlikely that she would survive winter.
We saw Georgina more than the other bears making it easier to get her at almost every angle. She has taken over SWR's rule of the fishing hole putting the run on other female and younger bears in the area. I did see SWR once this year she still had her cubs with her from last year however it appeared rearing young was a real strain on her, she was thin and drawn in the early summer when bears can be underweight, perhaps SWR was focusing more on the survival of her cubs.

Tiny Lesser Tenrec Azizi close up of his face. He was dribbling. This is because when he was 8 weeks old, he was covered in mites, severely underweight and he needed worming. For several months, he saw the vet regularly and I had to hand feed him and as a result he dribbles when I bring him out, in anticipation of food!! It makes for interesting times when I am trying to photograph him!!
Sending Christmas quills vibes to all!!
Four days ago i finally got her to eat enough to sustain her weight by locking her in the laundry at night. She eats all her food by morning and she rests. I had syringe fed her as she had become underweight and dehydrated. Since forcing her to rest at night she is doing very well.
A sad story about 2R. You can see in the photo, 2R’s left wing is dragging. I called a bird rescue agency Birds in Helping Hands @birdsinhelpinghands who were a great help to me on instructing me what to do, and they told me to cover the bird with a towel and take it down the beach to Seaside Seabird Sanctuary @seaside4thebirds. 2R had a fractured shoulder and was severely underweight. The great people at seabird sanctuary did all they could for 2R but unfortunately 2R didn’t make it.
what is bodyshaming?
Since the 21st century, bodyshaming has been a term used to describe forms of discrimination, insults, bullying or humiliation of people because of their external appearance; especially with regard to an ideal of beauty.
so it is described in wiki.
i myself do not correspond to the ideal of beauty in industry and many people. those who know me know. bodyshaming is one of the worst insults i have ever experienced. so what? i don't have a size 32. what? I don't want to have either! I am at peace with myself. even if it took a while, but i LOVE my curves! each! If you don't fit, you should look away. BUT stop judging people by their appearance! How do you want to know whether the extra weight (I find this word much better than being overweight as many people call it) that someone is not health-related? many simply label people with the phrase 'he / she eats too much'. but this is only true in a few cases. NOT in all!
personally, i even eat little, my friends and family say. i never ate much. I still wear size 50. So what? I am proud of it and live healthy with it!
And it affects not only people who are overweight, but also those who are underweight. they suffer as well!
so please: stop the bodyshaming! it hurts everyone. some suffer extremely as a result. others fall into depression and find it difficult to get out.
keep it simple and accept people as they are!

Although it's not a good sign to see these out during the day. It was a surprise this afternoon when this little chappie came wandering along. Managed to fill up the feed bowl up in time for it to eat. It then disappeared & I presumed it was off for a drink of water. Managed to locate it again, up in a corner lying out in full sun. A quick phone call to our local hedgehog lady at Hedgehog Haven who was round sharply to collect Him. He is safe hands now. He was found to be underweight & has had a course of antibiotics (just in case). Fingers crossed for his release back into the Garden when deemed ready.
Little rodents are especially vulnerable at this time of year. Hungry after a many months in their dens, they emerge with the first warming days, looking for food. This coincides with the hawk migration, and they are looking for food, too!
Meanwhile, ground squirrels and prairie dogs must scamper across the snow to find open patches of grass; for some it will be their last scamper. About a decade ago we had several wet summers in succession, and the ground squirrel population plummeted. A biologist friend told me they were dying in their dens of pneumonia. As a result, I saw fewer hawks during those years. They will go where the food source happens to be.
2017 and 2018 were drought years in southwestern Saskatchewan. A prairie dog researcher from the University of Calgary told me that in 2018, a lot of prairie dogs were underweight by summer's end, and might not have enough body fat to survive the winter. They will produce smaller litters in such years. Last summer there was good rainfall, the rodents that evaded predation were happy and fat, and I expect to see large litters this year. Will there be rain? No one knows. In a way, the uncertainty makes wildlife photography here exciting; I can't predict how things will unfold. That forces me to simply get out and explore, and half the fun is not knowing what to expect.

Playtime for Raven and Cuba. (cont.)
Raven was slightly underweight on her arrival.
She's eating well and has lost her 'gaunt' appearance.
A pity we can't see her tail here, I only managed 3 decent Snaps.
She's a bit underweight but absolutely beautiful and hard working mama as she consistently looked for food for her kids in the high traffic area.

" A special cartoon tribute of thanks that I created for my trainer, Ricardo Morello in 2007- when I finally got the confidence to attend my London gym, after years of being underweight. It only took me until the age of 41!
One of the best things I ever did though - & while I'm never going to be or aspire to be musclebound like Ricardo, the extra physical strength balances out my enormous nervous energy required for the creation of my Expressionist paintings.
Ricardo had been training for years and planning a change of direction - to work with animals - he returned to his home town of Sao Paulo; and on his departure, this was my surprise gift. He had talked about his beloved terrier, described him - and was overwhelmed that I had captured the little dog - without having met him!
We talked of faith in God; and I was fascinated to learn of the monumental size of the Statue, Christ The Redeemer that overlooks Rio de Janeiro...Ricardo said that I could sit on Christ's fingernail!"
God is monumental...

We have two new baby goats! This little one was underweight, under 1 lb. We needed to take it to a vet immediately and get it tube fed, then upon return, its mother rejected it. We need to feed it about every hour, and It may not be eating enough. The first three days are critical; we're fighting to get enough food in it to get it over the hump.
Muppet the pigeon on her favourite perch. We found Muppet, aged about 10 weeks, underweight and ill. Here she is now 3 months later - a picture of health.
I've now got a good excuse not to tidy up the top end of the garden until the spring ;-)
Looks a little underweight, or a youngster..
Otto had a good workout. He is a rescue animal that is underweight. He has been with us a few months now. And he is coming along splendidly.
This little fella was found in a friends garden, underweight & ill. Luckily he is well equipped to care for a variety of wildlife & he is now the correct weight to go into hibernation in a few weeks. Will be taking a few images of him before this happens, such endearing animals.

At The Marine Mammal Center
"California sea lions are our most common patients at The Marine Mammal Center. In 2009, we admitted over 1700 animals. Nearly 1400 of these were California sea lions. The most common reasons California sea lions are rescued include: malnutrition, domoic acid toxicosis, leptospirosis, cancer, pneumonia, entanglement in debris or fishing gear, gunshots, and other wounds. In 2009, many of the sea lions that stranded were malnourished yearlings. Animals can become severely underweight from maternal separation, disease, lack of food sources, effects of El Niño and other environmental factors. In 1998, the Center diagnosed the first case of domoic acid toxicosis in marine mammals; a condition caused by harmful algal blooms that causes the animals to have seizures. Although the Center has conducted extensive studies to better understand this disease, hundreds of sea lions are affected annually." (Source: Marine Mammal Center 2015: www.marinemammalcenter.org/)
Behavior:
California sea lions are very social animals, and groups often rest closely packed together at favored haul-out sites on land or float together on the ocean's surface in "rafts." They are sometimes seen "porpoising," or jumping out of the water, presumably to speed up their swimming. Sea lions have also been seen "surfing" breaking waves. California sea lions are opportunistic eaters, feeding on squid, octopus, herring, rockfish, mackerel, and small sharks. In turn, sea lions are preyed upon by Orcas (killer whales) and great white sharks.

Here is the information associated with Rocky:-
"I am a rescued English Barn Owl, I was abandoned by my mum and left to starve to death all because I do not know how to kill my prey and could not fly for very long.
I was very underweight when I was picked up by a kind farmer who told Wise Owl World of my fate.
They picked me up and gave me oodles of love and affection.
Now Wise Owl World are looking after me for the rest of my life and associating me with other owls. I am learning what I should do to live a good life. However, I could never survive in the wild on my own."

MISS SL ♛ Sweden says, “Meet Lesley Hornsby, nicknamed Twiggy. Twiggy had a unique look with her thin figure and boyishly short haircut. It brought a new kind of minimalist, androgynous sex appeal that increasingly became popular in the sixties. She was a celebrated model amongst many other activities during her career.
The reason I picked Twiggy is a sentimental one. She was criticized for being an unhealthy beauty role model for girls. But Twiggy, struggling with her own looks, said that being skinny was just her natural build.
Those who know my avatar, know she is very skinny. That is because she is a tribute to my sister who is herself (naturally) underweight. She struggles with her self-image every day, feeling like a scrawny creature no one finds attractive. Twiggy brought, and brings hope to a lot of girls like my sister and that alone makes her an icon in my eyes.”

We spotted Sugar on the lawn in the afternoon so we knew all was not well as no hedgehog should be out during the day. We took her to the rescue where she was treated for every parasite under the sun, water infection, flukes and dehydration, she was also very very underweight.
Latest update though is good news, she's putting on weight and eating well, responding well to meds and should be back home in a few weeks. We've got a proper hedgehog box for her and will be feeding her when she gets home, can't wait.
Like a prison camp, Lennox Castle became a prison for thousands of people declared as "mentally deficient". Now it lies in ruins, perhaps with one snowdrop signifying every previous inmate.
“Your head is all full of broken bottles once you realise that you don’t belong.”
Lennox Castle, in Lennoxtown, Dunbartonshire, was less of a mental institution than a warehouse, where those deemed society’s misfits were deposited.
Truants, unmarried mothers, wayward teenagers and children with learning difficulties, Down’s syndrome or mental illness all ended up there.
They were starved, drugged, -physically and emotionally abused and robbed of their humanity.
Part of the castle grounds now house Celtic’s training ground, opened in 2007. Players come and go, oblivious to what went on just decades before.
Marie regularly ran away. She was not the only one.
Those who did were chased by dogs through the surrounding woods. When returned, they were locked up for six weeks, placed on a mattress on the floor, drugged and forbidden visitors.
Punishments included being dressed in a knee-length white -nightshirt and being forced to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.
For misdemeanours, patients would be made to sit in a nightdress at a table in the corridor and eat bread and milk.
Not that mealtimes were much better for the rest.
Marie says: “The patients would sit with a plate and the staff would throw a pie at them, like it was feeding time at the zoo.”
One relative of a patient said he was horrified when he saw bread being thrown at his brother, like they were feeding birds.
In December 1989, a study in the British Medical Journal found a quarter of patients in Lennox Castle were grossly underweight and malnourished.
Marie had been placed in the hospital when she went off the rails, drinking and smoking and staying out.
She was diagnosed with a learning difficulty and her parents were assured Lennox Castle was the best place for her.
Marie says: “I was no different from thousands of other teenagers. I knew there was nothing wrong with me and if I hadn’t been strong in my mind, I would have gone crazy.”
Many were drugged and became institutionalised, making it almost impossible to break free.
Psychiatrists eventually admitted Marie had no learning difficulties and she was released but her ordeal wasn’t quite over.
Four years later, aged 39, she had a son, Joseph, to a former worker at the hospital.
But she had to fight to keep him and social workers visited her up to three times a day until they recognised she was a fit mother.
There's something deeply perverse going on within the Scottish SNP and Green's Goverment of Scotland's young people. This young Hedgehog, probably born in the summer, was seriously underweight when I found it struggling to move across a leafy track. It had probably not fed well for the last few weeks according to the volunteer whose rescue centre I took it to. Loss of hedges, field sizes and greater pesticide use are to blame for their dramatic decline. Hedgehogs are mainly bug eaters but this one needed a little more and I am happy to report that with the right care and warmth, prospects for its survival through winter are looking good. Woodland Trust's three Hedgehog pointers are;- 1) Organic husbandry,
2) Leaving a hole in fencing,
3) Planting a hedge.
I went out to Sandy Pines Wildlife Center today to find out how the little guy is doing. Turns out he had an infection, a bit of temperature along with that and was also underweight. He is now on antibiotics to clear up the infection. They told me he is in a cage with other Kestrels including another one that came in yesterday that was around the same age, but not from the same family was found in a different location. So he will be staying there for about a couple months until he learns to fly first then learn to hunt. Once that happens they will take the group of Kestrels and release them all in the one area, I am hoping it will be close to where I found this one, I drove by there today and seen his Mom on a wire which was kind of heartbreaking for me. I know her kid is doing okay but she doesn't. :( Before leaving Sandy Pines I expressed my interest in perhaps letting me tag along with them when they do the release, It would be awesome to watch them all go free! I must add that these people at Sandy Pines are awesome for doing all they do to help wildlife in need, if you feel like making a donation to them they have a link on their website to do so. www.sandypineswildlife.org/

Ultrasound captured on Friday 08/12/2022 at "Bellysimo" in Mays Landing, New Jersey, by Amanda Corbin. An extremely talented ultrasound technician and the owner of the business. She is so talented & has possibly the best job ever! ( I cannot imagine how great that feels, to be able to give the experience to Mothers & Father's ALL DAY LONG- Every day of the week.. (that we experienced this past Friday). because WOW!
As most of you know, this pregnancy has been a crazy rollercoaster. Lots of health issues & anxiety/emotions.. and so Wednesday of this past week (the 10th) we got some super scary news (AGAIN). The unexperienced ultrasound tech at my hospital ultrasound put in a report saying that Josiah is underweight. (With him being normal to above before, that's cause for concern. However, honestly I am feeling like she made a mistake. First of all, I know for a fact that she's new and just got over training because a couple weeks ago- she trained WITH ME as her patient. This time she did the ultrasound alone, but she seemed to be doubting herself or having issues.. (I have had so many ultrasounds & I've asked SO MANY questions - that I KNOW that the technician is supposed to take any specific measurement approx. 3 times.. Well, my newer tech measured Josiah's head probably 35 times. (One example). Like, I seen and noticed that she was measuring certain things far more times than usual, but then she'd move on.. and go BACK to it later and measure it some more. (his head).
So, after my ultrasound the doctor was sent in with the news that he was now 'underweight' and considered in the 10th percentile. We'll see... (I'm going with my gut here & maybe I won't get stressed out like I always do.. over which usually ends up being NOTHING). She said at 34 weeks he was only 3lbs 13oz, I believe was this low body weight that they were talking about. I believe he's SUPPOSED to be 4lbs 5oz+ or something. Anyway, I don't believe that.. But, since the doctor is sending me for weekly NST(non stress tests) & ultrasounds/weigh ins.. maybe I'll get more clear answers?? Hopefully.
But, LOOK at his photos! Does that look like an underweight baby to you??? He has such a chunky arm (not seen in these specific photos).. little fat fingers, a little double chin I'm sure you can see in some of them... etc.
He looks great to me. And, SO many people - including someone who see's so many ultrasounds of baby's THIS age.. said, he does NOT look underweight. I'm just praying that my feelings & intuition is right.. but, we'll see!
Other than the "low weight", the doctor said, he's perfectly healthy - right now),,
~~
Please keep baby Josiah IN YOUR PRAYERS though, still. It's very much appreciated.
It's literally been ONE THING after another.. as some of you know. & that is SO scary!
Juan & I are so grateful & excited. We know how blessed we truly are... & Thank you all for your continuous prayers.. Please do keep them coming! - For our sweet baby!
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
& GOD BLESS YOU!
I hope you guys love the photos of Zi, as much as we do!
I'm literally obsessed!!!
Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric illness that describes an eating disorder characterized by extremely low body weight and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Individuals with anorexia nervosa are known to control body weight commonly through the means of voluntary starvation, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. While the condition primarily affects adolescent females approximately 10% of people with the diagnosis are male. Anorexia nervosa, involving neurobiological, psychological, and sociological components, is a complex condition that can lead to death in the most severe cases. Statistics on anorexia show that between 1 – 5% of all female adolescents and young women are anorexic. The average age of onset is 17. It is rare, but not unheard of, for children under the age of 10 to have the condition. Anorexia statistics show that with treatment, only 60% make a full recovery. About 20% make a partial recovery, meaning that they may be able to hold a job and maintain some superficial relationships but remain very focused on food and weight. They remain underweight. The final 20% stay dangerously underweight. They are seen frequently in emergency rooms, mental health clinics, inpatient hospital units, and eating disorder treatment programs.
no, i am not Anorexic. that is that.
i know people who put themselves through this, and it is horrible to watch.
so if you have a problem with this, or you know someone that has a problem with this,
get help.
please.

Caught raiding a restaurant! Ha ha! That's my boy!
My story
Betung was found by a villager’s dog in an orchard at Kampung Betung, Ranau district in April 2020. The villager claimed that she was wandering alone and was a very tiny cub with no teeth during the rescue. She was previously kept as a house pet in a chicken wire mesh cage and was fed with Lactogen milk powder only - she lacked sufficient nutrients for her growth and development. The villager was willing to surrender the cub to the Sabah Wildlife Department. She was sent to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park on 21st August 2020. She came to BSBCC on 26th August 2020. Upon arrival at the BSBCC, her weight was 1.4kg and she was in a poor condition, underweight and suffering from being emaciated, malnourished and had multiple alopecia on her head and body.
I love collar bones, I just love bones in general. Maybe that's why I like underweight guys? Hahah.
Today, my mom was really sick ): I stayed home from school so I could take care of her.
Happy Caturday 26 April 2025 - "Then and Now." Cats who I got who were underweight (Jet) and on the thin side (Agate), now good weight and, maybe a bit extra. (I feed them separately which helps). See comment for the "Then" photo.
Six weeks ago, this little sprat was malnourished, life on the streets had left him underweight and undersized, and his fur was coarse and ratty. He's now doubled in size at least, his fur is sleek and silky, he's glowing with health and energy!
And all because he's gone through a couple of bags of kitten chow (right).

Hi everyone who is interested in what's been going on with the bat care. Here is a little update.
Harley the brown long Eared bat was successfully released back to the wild but Biscuit another Long Eared has gone to North Devon Bat Care as he had a damaged ear and we are not sure he is able to feed himself in the wild.Roly the female Common Pipistrelle is now back in the wild.
We picked up a young male Common Pip from a local vet,he was a little underweight but no injuries. So we built his weight up and when ready took him to NDBC to see how he flew. All was good with him so last week we returned him to where he was found and released him back which was a wonderful sight as all the other bat from the roost came out and greeted and danced in the air with him.
We had a male Soprano Pip found in a laundry basket who had a stomach upset. We gave him a little TLC and after it was better he went back and was released.
We picked up another Long Eared found in Bude but we had no information to where she was found so we took her to NDBC and she was put with some other Long Ears and has now been released with some new friends.
Two week ago we were called to a factory to collect a Whiskered Bat which we think got trapped in the building when it was shut down for a few days.He is a little underweight but is doing well and will soon be going back.
Now for the bad.We had a Pip brought to us which had been caught by a cat.He unfortunately didn't make it.
Last week we were called to collect another Pip again another cat incident. He was in a bad way and had multiple breaks in is arm, wrist and shoulder and had to be euthanized.we also learnt that their cat had caught two other beforehand both of which were killed by their cat.We gave the owners some advice on keeping their cat in between dusk and dawn but were called back late one night to pick up another Pip.He was also in a very bad way with puncture wounds, wing tears and exposed bones. We gave him pain relief and knew we would have to take him to the vet in the morning to be euthanized but he died a short while after : (
So that what's been going on and I will keep anyone who is interested informed every so often : )

World Food Programme Hunger Statistics
Hunger kills more people every year than aids, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
Every year, authors, journalists, teachers, researchers, schoolchildren and students ask us for statistics about hunger and malnutrition. To help answer these questions, we've compiled a list of useful facts and figures on world hunger.
842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. This number has fallen by 17 percent since 1990.
The vast majority of hungry people (827 million) live in developing countries, where 14.3 percent of the population is undernourished.
Asia has the largest number of hungry people (over 500 million) but Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence (24.8 percent of population).
If women farmers had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.
Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five - 3.1 million children each year.
One out of six children -- roughly 100 million -- in developing countries is underweight.
One in four of the world's children are stunted. In developing countries the proportion can rise to one in three.
80 percent of the world's stunted children live in just 20 countries.
66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone.
WFP calculates that US$3.2 billion is needed per year to reach all 66 million hungry school-age children.
This little fella was found in a friends garden, underweight & ill. Luckily he is well equipped to care for a variety of wildlife & he is now the correct weight to go into hibernation in a few weeks. Will be taking a few images of him before this happens, such endearing animals.
Biscuit has had a busy week.
We discovered the answer to some feeding, regurgitating (and underweight) issues he's been having since the beginning.
Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA) a genetic disorder that affects the passage of food through the esophagus to the stomach. Never heard of it before 'eh!
Surgery was Tuesday.
He's recovering well, but not entirely sure how he'll go long term, reports suggest 90% of cases are fully resolved, so that's what we're hoping for.
I got him out for a play early on the day of his surgery. Because he wasn't allowed any food, we tried rewarding some good behaviours with a throw of the tennis ball, he accepted that a couple of times but no more, he's a food motivated fella :-)

Introducing Baby Daisy... Daisy a Maltese was born in June and came into our lives just 5 weeks ago. We were lucky enough to get her as she was yet another unwanted puppy and trapped all day alone in a flat. The happiness and love little Daisy has brought to our lives is wonderful. She is now 5 months and 2 weeks old, she's flea free, no longer underweight as she had malnutrition and has her own woodland and lovely loving home, my heart melts everyday ~ KissThePixel2018

Your body isn't ugly. Society is.
Anorexia: An eating disorder, chiefly in young women, characterized by aversion to food and obsession with weight loss, and manifested in self-induced starvation and excessive exercise, etc.
A lot of people think that being thin is extremely important.
It's not.
"Is 'fat' really the worst thing a human being can be? Is 'fat' worse than 'vindictive', 'jealous', 'shallow', 'vain', 'boring' or 'cruel'? Not to me."
— J.K. Rowling
It happened a few years ago, but I still remember it vividly, like it was yesterday.
A girl was criticizing this girl in her class for being overweight. What she said was immensely cruel, and so judgemental.. the worst thing was that she didn't even realise the severity of what she said.
Later on, I got to know the same poor girl she was talking about. She is actually an extremely lovely person. She's a million times nicer than me. I felt so bad, there and then, that she got judged so viciously just because of her weight. And i felt that wasn't fair. I felt sick, because I knew it would continue when she got older and got a job, got new friends..
So what if I'm thin? It doesn't make me a better person than she is in any way.
So what if you're thin? It doesn't change a thing.
So if that guy you like cannot accept your weight, he's not worth it.
So if that girl you like tells you you need a six pack, she's not worth it either.
So if they don't want to be friends because they sneer at your weight, you don't need them.
So if everyone looks down on you automatically because of your size, they're the ones losing out on getting to know a wonderful person.
And it's not that easy being extremely thin either.
No, not all thin people starve themselves. We eat, alright? It's not that fun being thin. People call us anorexic wherever we go. If we're not hungry, it's always 'You're not eating? Anorexic." or "No wonder you're so thin."
So underweight people don't have the freedom to not eat, and overweight people don't have the freedom to eat.
This male Snowy is being examined at the Raptors' Clinic in Saint-Hyacinthe, Qc. after having been trapped at the Montreal International Airport (YUL). Weighing 1.285Kg he is slightly underweight and quite tired after having probably spent considerable energy trying to free himself from the Swedish Goshawk traps used at the Airport. He is rehydrated intravenously and force-fed. Otherwise in excellent condition, and will be monitored over the next few days to determine when best to release him.

Agate giving Jet some snuggles. Jet is running skinny - she came from shelter underweight and might be getting worse. Agate has definitely gained. We have a vet visit Saturday (first visit). She was a but sniffly which seems to have stopped - if she wasn't eating well due to stuffed nose stopping scent, perhaps that will change. It is definitely true that I had ham for dinner last night and she was completely captivated by that (although I haven't fed her any). I have confirmed that she does eat kibble but clearly prefers wet, as does Agate. This morning I made sure Jet had some time with wet food and without Agate in the room, she ate a 'reasonable amount' and didn't seem to want a significant amount more even when Agate came back in (and they ate out of the same plate for a short while).
(2 days later) I had Jet to the vet yesterday and she had very much dropped weight. lab tests not back yet but she has had a flea-and-worm treatment and I've been directed to feed them separately. That helps some but Jet seems to have missed the carnivore memo - she wants to graze more (eat a bit, do something else, notice the food, eat a bit more). I hope we can get enough food into her.

According to the Stanley Hotel website, Estes Valley was once a wild, lonely parkland known only to wandering tribes of Ute and Arapaho. When the Earl of Dunraven visited in 1872, he coveted this “sportsman’s paradise” of rushing streams and peaceful meadows teeming with fish and game. He sought to keep the valley to himself as a private hunting preserve, but as more and more American settlers were drawn by its natural beauty, he realized that this dream could never be a reality.
The story of the Stanley Hotel itself began in 1903 when Yankee inventor Freelan Oscar Stanley arrived in the valley, weak and underweight from the symptoms of consumption. To his amazement, just one season here was enough to restore his health to better than before! Overjoyed, he vowed to return each summer for the rest of his life.
However, he and his wife Flora were used to the sophistication of East Coast society, and the little community of Estes Park offered little to stimulate and challenge this multi-talented genius. Together, they resolved to build a beautiful grand hotel – and when the Stanley Hotel opened in 1909, the first guests who pulled up in stylish Stanley-designed steam cars were astonished at what they saw. Here in this mountain wilderness, surrounded by the rustic haunts of the hunter and homesteader, was an edifice that withstood comparison to the posh hotels “back east.” Electric lights, telephones, en suite bathrooms, a staff of uniformed servants and a fleet of automobiles were at their disposal. Naturally, Stanley had also done much to develop the burgeoning town. By 1917, it was an official municipality with water-works, a power plant and civic organizations that were all, in some way, thanks to Stanley.
By the 1970s the hotel’s splendor had faded due to lack of care and investment. It might have eventually have succumbed to the wrecking ball, if not for a fortuitous visit by author Stephen King. A stay of one night was enough to inspire his third major work and first hardcover bestseller The Shining, which remains a landmark masterpiece in a long and well-known list of novels.
The hotel stands today as a beautifully restored testament to its glory days, when it served as a holiday retreat for wealthy urbanites. A range of tours highlights the history of this magnificent historical structure while a tempting menu of amenities, culinary experiences and lavish spa treatments provides all the comfort and glamour required by even the most discerning modern visitors.
They are yearning to go outside.
They've become inside cats since the end of August last year.
Raphael on the left, has gained weight because he doesn't get the exercise he's used to. Mercedes on the right is underweight, she is nervous at being confined. I've finally got her eating well with a lot of patience and attention and some force feeding with a syringe. Somehow if I get food in her, it seems to switch her appetite back on.
If I have a bad day or few days where I'm anxious, she goes back to hardly eating. Also the heat affects her appetite a lot. She has actually gained a bit of weight here. But she is still terribly underweight.
Raphael is always friendly to her. She is a bit feral in her play, she bites and hisses...but Raphael loves her and loves it when she chases him. He's the only one that doesn't react to her cranky ways.
