...of course Aubrey came around to lend a "hand" *boss*...or at least to "help" *more bossing* Amy out... :D

Fall migration is underway now in the Driftless Region as songbirds start shifting south on their way to warmer wintering grounds. I noticed a number of these beautiful Baltimore orioles in the area today and most of them were likely recent arrivals from Minnesota. Most Baltimore orioles will be south of here by September.

The seas are rough today. We're underway in the North Atlantic during the winter. This is in the trough of a 60 foot swell looking up at the crest. The bull nose just popped up after taking dip. It was rough for three days before the storm eased. At times the main deck had three to four foot waves rolling down it. This particular swell the helmsman took slightly off the port bow. This is the view from the bridge thru the sea spray. This was an epic storm and I wouldn't have missed it. Another photo from the shoebox. Shot with Canon TX 35mm film thru sea spray covered glass from the bridge. #USN #underway #NorthAtlantic #AtSea #trough #crest #boot #ship #navy #Schiff #navire #asea #epic #SeaSpray #Ozean #océan #hav

Building work got underway in 1201. Eight centuries later and the abbey is one of the best preserved in Wales. Even the monks’ fishpond is still full of water!

From its cloister to chapter house, with striking rib-vaulted roof, this abbey was shaped by the devout nature of its inhabitants. The abbey was also remarkably self-sufficient thanks to the lay brethren. They were happy to leave the choir monks to their prayers while they got on with the job of tending the land. All friends together? Not quite. The monks observed their daily offices in the choir, separated by a screen from the lay brethren who worshipped in the nave of the abbey church.

Far from an easy life, Valle Crucis Abbey suffered a serious fire and numerous attacks but went on to earn a reputation for its appreciation of the literary arts. In 1535 it was ranked the second richest Cistercian monastery after Tintern. By this time, the Cistercians had relaxed their orthodox austerity. A comfortable heated suite was created for the abbot. This new found wealth and hospitality didn’t last long. Valle Crucis was duly dissolved by royal decree in 1537.

Tonight's practise session was held in near perfect conditions. This is one of the bikes through Kirk Michael this evening. I'm sorry I've no idea who it is!Taken from my front door step. This is SOOC.

The Alma Estate in Ponders End. There are four tower blocks, a parade of shops and some houses coming down for redevelopment here.

The nearest block is coming down a bit at a time, as it is right next to a busy railway line.

Taken from the Anacortes Ferry during a transit from Friday Harbor on San Juan Island back to Anacortes. Enjoyed the crispness on this cool Spring day.

A ship begins its ocean crossing as the evening rolls in, following the buoys as it heads out to sea.

Complex process underway. Early adults lay eggs which hatch into these larvae (caterpillars) which then pupate into a chrysalis where they transform into a butterfly or moth. Along the way lots of preditors are prepared to take advantage of them. It's a wonder to me that they every succeed. But happily they do!

Amtrak's series of Heritage Units includes one of the Phase IV scheme, which I have to admit is my least favorite of the group. However, word up and down the UP Jefferson City Sub of it being on the 314/313 circuit today coupled with another tip that there were 5 private cars on Amtrak #303 pushed me to downtown STL for some tries at both.

I missed the eastbound movement with 184 due to getting a little too lackadaisical with time getting out of the house, didn't get any shots that I'm terribly happy with of the the private cars on 303, but I DID manage to salvage the day with this shot of 184 getting underway on it's westbound trip across the state with the buildings of St. Louis lit up by the afternoon sun in the background.

I guess I can check the box off for this unit on my list now.

Track crews were hard at work on 12/11/2022 replacing switches south of Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station on the Lexington Avenue Line (4/5/6), as seen from one of the mezzanine passageways in the station. Employees from the Track, Signal, and Traction Power Departments were on site to ensure the new switch, which was designed by in-house engineering forces, was smoothly and quickly installed during the relatively short weekend work window.
