Never lose hope. The darkest clouds precede the loveliest rain!

~ Avijeet Das

A kind of funny story....I had my CPL filter and 10 stop filter on my lens when I took this shot. They are both made by Breakthrough Photography, so fit together well. Too well, apparently. When I tried to unscrew them and take them apart, they came off together. Nothing I did could get them apart. Finally, I went to my local camera store, and they couldn't get them apart either. I asked if they had a filter wrench, and no, they did not. They recommended I take the filters to a camera repair store about 30 minutes away. I thanked them, took the filters back, and immediately, they just slid apart. We all had to laugh, and the camera store guy said, "That will be $75!" :) Go figure!

Do any of you have a special technique for when filters get stuck to each other?

Propped against a pylon for steadiness, I marvel at how much light is captured in a dark-to-the-naked-eye scene.

This pier looks like it's been repaired many times and so it doesn't have that beautiful under structure that most do. Beach images coming very close to the end, but I'm sure everyone is happy about that. Wish there had been better weather, but it's ok.

It had been amazing day on the coast with the weather changing constantly. By around 4.00pm the skies were looking dark and ominous once more but I thought I would take my chances and head to Pt. Lonsdale and the lighthouse there where I thought the stormy weather might make for some great photos.

As I wandered out along the pier the sky continued to get darker and you could see the rain approaching but there were a few fisherman braving the elements and even a few surfers in the water too. I decided to head for cover and made my way to the lighthouse by which time it bucketed down and the wind was quite fierce too. I had contemplated leaving at that point but I was here now and decided to stick it out a little longer.

Sure enough the rain stopped, the sky cleared and to my complete surprise blue skies and sunshine prevailed. As I headed back out along the pier one of the fisherman said 'Look the sun's come out for the photographer! . . . You should have been here an hour ago,' he said 'there were 15-20 metre swells just out there!' That would have been a sight to see . . . any wonder the surfers were hanging about. I asked him if he'd caught dinner yet . . . 'Only one salmon!' he said.

By the time I reached home just over an hour later the weather had changed once more . . . the blue skies and sun long gone and the dark ominous sky had returned only this time with a double rainbow! I was driving at the time but would have loved to capture those too!

I got drenched getting out of the car, hard to believe just over an hour ago I was basking int he sunshine but that's just one of the many things I love about the coast. It was also Halloween so I suppose the dark skies made a perfect backdrop for the trick or treaters who were brave enough to venture out in the stormy weather.

Hi Everyone, here we go again... in photojournalistic style- I have posted 7 new photographs at once. The other favorite missing from this bunch is the one I titled "Hugs" to you this Holiday season from Huntington Beach Pier- the one with the 2 little boys hugging. This was a beautiful December morning in Sunny Southern California as the storm clouds began to roll in. Because of the special lighting that day- these have turned out to be my favorite of anything I have ever photographed in Huntington Beach. Please look at all 7, each has something I like that makes it special. Enjoy your weekends and thanks so much for visiting my photostream. I will be visiting yours and catching up on comments this weekend ;-) ps THANKS to ALL who commented on my baby photo post with their opinions- I truly appreciate it!!

Not totally satisfied with the result- aiming for better reflection and the infinity illusion on the next attempt, this will do for now :)

the pier is just too darn long and the wave was pounding relentlessly!

Stalwart pylons stand on their own.

Supporting each other, never alone.

Marking time down below.

Planks up top, horizontally laid

With bolts and nuts these are staid.

But buried deep and never asleep

Are verticals sunk in the ground.

Absorbing the forces of Pacific’s swell

They shutter and resonate like a bell.

And in time, with each blow,

On these poles barnacles grow.

Among them walk and come to know

Shadows cast in late afternoon’s glow.

Or silent and strong in foggy gloom.

Peeking through, the setting moon.

Sometimes FOG is a GOOD thing!! :D ....This morning I got up at 4.30am to make it down to Huntington Beach pier to capture what I thought was going to be a spectacular sunrise.... but instead I was greeted with white out conditions... I sat in my car and patiently waited for a long time... finally the light was strong enough to push through the fog a little and I saw my opportunity to catch a little bit of magic under the pier... :D Have a great week everyone!!

With my back against the concrete piling trying to keep my feet dry and the tripod steady as the surf washed around it... oh yeah, and trying to keep the lens clean enough to keep lens flare to a minimum. It took a few tries...
