This is erosion at work. The rock stack on the right is called "the Razorback". The Razorback once extended much further out to sea, but the force of the waves gradually eroded and undercut the base of the stack.

Clouds and windblown snow stream over Junction Butte in Canyonlands National Park as a winter storm blows through southern Utah. This view is from Murphy Bench on the White Rim road near the designated camp sites. The edges of the ridges and buttes facing southward (windward, to the right) are clear of snow due to the high winds. On the far left side of the frame a bit of Grand View Point on Island in the Sky is visible. A section of the White Rim road snakes across the plateau in the center on the right side, cutting toward its namesake (shaded band of rock) and a precarious section right at the edge of the undercut rock.

An ephemeral creek occasionally funnels water into McDonald Canyon in the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area.

The banks of the stream have been cut from Entrada Sandstone, while the basement layer of the stream is Wingate Sandstone.

The precipice or lip of the dryfall is hazardous to approach, for it is deeply undercut by an alcove more than 100 feet tall.

"The Columbia River shaped the Gorge as a physical place by carving through successive uplifts and volcanic outflows beginning about three million years ago and reaching something like its basic form about a million years ago. Raging floods of glacial meltwater known as the Missoula Floods further shaped the landscape, repeatedly crashing through the Gorge between 19,000 and 15,000 years ago. They stripped away loose talus and soil to shape its present landforms, creating landslide hazards from undercut slopes on the Washington side and turning mountain streams into hanging waterfalls on the Oregon side."

Pleased to scratch off another waterfall at the top of my bucket list. Upper Mesa Falls is the 2nd most impressive large waterfall in Idaho, IMHO. Shoshone Falls is considerably larger.

Was a wet, rainy day so wasn't able to get a rainbow in the spray. Darn.

"Upper Mesa Falls was formed when Henry's Fork cut its canyon deep enough to encounter an especially resistant layer of hard volcanic rock. As the canyon deepened downstream, a ledge formed overwhich the river flowed. Because the layers beneath the resistant one are softer, the falling water undercut the ledge above, eventually causing pieces of the harder rock to break away. This creates the sharp lip and spectacular drop of the waterfall you see today.

The Molalla (mo-LA-la) River is a 51-mile (82 km) tributary of the Willamette River in the northwestern part of Oregon. The Molalla is the largest Willamette tributary unblocked by a dam.

During the early 19th century, the area around the river was populated by the Molala people. During that time, an extensive system of trails along the river allowed trade between the peoples of the Willamette Valley and eastern Oregon. As late as the 1920s, the trails were used by Native Americans from the Warm Springs Indian Reservation to reach huckleberry-picking grounds near Table Rock.

Whitewater enthusiasts sometimes run the upper reaches of the Molalla River as well as the lower. Under certain conditions, the 5.1-mile (8.2 km) stretch from Copper Creek to Table Rock Fork can be navigated by boaters capable of handling technical class III (intermediate) to IV (advanced) water on the International Scale of River Difficulty. Below that comes a stretch, about 5 miles (8 km) long, of class III to III+ water. Hazards on these upper miles may include narrow chutes, sudden drops, and logs in the water. The next 8 miles (13 km), Turner Bridge to Glen Avon Bridge, are rated technical class III to IV with hazards similar to the upper reaches but also including scouting difficulties as well as a dangerous undercut at a rapids called Goldilocks,

This is an unprotected shoreline of the Rappahannock River in Virginia. The foreground is protected by riprap. The far shoreline is left natural. You can see that the trees are being undercut by the high tides, winds and storms. The trees eventually die and fall down and more land is claimed by the river.

Mrs. Krach and I hiked into the Grand Wash area of Capitol Reef National Park ... and made it into the Narrows section. The 14mm prime lens was a fine choice here for this hike, allowing for some neat perspectives I think. The section of rock to the right here has been undercut by the water flow and appeared to go about 20 feet back into the rock along this narrow section where the velocity would be kicked higher during heavy rains.

The result of hard sandstone being sculpted by winds and scoured by water erosion, Navajo Dome is one of the many unique geologic structures in Capitol Reef National Park.

As a nearby marker points out: "Monsoonal rains fill the Fremont River and its side canyons with sediment, adding to the scouring power. Forceful streams easily erode softer clay and mud layers, which in turn undercuts cliff faces. Water freezing within cracks pries apart boulders and cliffs. Gravity allows features to collapse. What is left behind are domes, bridges, arches, cliffs, and slopes – a colorful masterpiece created by nature."

Capitol Reef is a quiet but magnificent location for anyone interested in geologic history. One of the “Big 5” Utah National Parks, for some reason it doesn’t get the notoriety of its peers. That makes it an ideal location for visitors, looking to escape crowds and enjoy nature.

(Chroicocephalus ridibundus) We came across this rather sad scene last week while out walking on the Isle of Wight. The chick had fallen into the water from a small island where Mum had a nest with three other chicks. Because the banks were all undercut by the tide the youngster couldn't get out of the water and was rapidly becoming cold and waterlogged. Mum was frantically trying to get her baby out but although she tried very hard the baby was just too heavy for her. She did manage to get the baby to swim to the other side of the salt pan where it could get out but then she was away from her other chicks and trying to look after both them and the lone one. We just couldn't do anything to help unfortunately because the island was too far out in the salt pan. Hopefully she managed something......

June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.

Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.
