A taxi transfer from Vieste to the start of our day's walk. This was at an altitude of 283m, our destination hotel was at 800m so we knew there was going to be quite a lot of uphill walking. There was! 14.5km through forest all the way, 770m ascent, 260m descent. We started in oak forest and eventually moved into beech. There wasn't much scope for contemplative photography but the birdsong was constant, there were no mechanical sounds at all and very few people walking, a few cyclists on the well formed tracks.
