The result of a cold, boring sunday afternoon a couple of months ago - 120 photos blu-tacked onto my bedroom wall (In clear violation of the terms of my rental agreement, I'm such a bad ass!). I always knew it would only be a temporary thing, as the property is inspected every 3 - 6 months. The letter came yesterday, and the wall is once again naked...
I've been a flickr user since 2010. This is my 726th photo. I'm here because I like to share my work and experience the work of others, to basically get and stay inspired about photography. Eventually I will reach 1000 photos. Capping the "Free" accounts and offering a reasonable "Pro" plan makes sense but for me there will be no justifiable reason to pay for $50 per year for a "Pro" account. I simply don't need it. I would gladly pay $20 per year to remain a "social" user and a limit of 5000k photos would be more than enough. I believe in paying for what you use (by monetary means, favors or whatever). It helps people appreciate and maintain what they have invested in and keep exchanges alive, but this reasoning does not seem possible on the internet nowadays (my guess is, 'pay for what you use' is not a viable "business model" for boards and shareholders who only want to talk profit margins and bonuses). Unless Flickr offers a budget plan for social users, this account will stop at 1000 photos. My guess is, there are many other users in similar positions, some more engaged in the community aspect, some less, but not offering options to an active user base can have serious consequences. There is a risk that as the social aspect of the service declines and the communities dry up, so will the overall user base. And when that happens, we all know what follows... This is not only about Flickr. I also feel I'm paying too much for a bloated web hosting service I cannot fully use and for Vimeo and Soundcloud who keep begging me to "upgrade" even as a regular paying customer. Word has it that these and other
"popular" services have been in decline for some time and are at risk of going under, most likely for the same reasons, breaching the trust of their users for ulterior motives. I'll stop here for now, but if anyone can sympathize with what I'm saying, let me know your thoughts. The last resort will be to alert the captain before we abandon ship...
