We started our first full day in Vancouver at the Tourist Info Centre where we purchased a week’s worth of transit passes. Then we were off to the University of British Columbia campus to visit its gardens.

Our adventure at UBC and our accidental discovery of a nude beach.

October 17, 2018. I left the library at UBC just after 4:20pm to find a massive crowd of students smoking marijuana outside the student union building. The entire centre of campus smelt of weed. A historic event...and harmless enough I suppose.

There are nearly 10,000 different kinds of plants at UBC Botanical Garden. UBC Botanical Garden consists of two main gardens called North Garden and Asian Garden. The Moon Gate and Tunnel connect the two gardens. One of the special parts of North Garden is the Food Garden. The volunteers (also known as Friends of the Garden) harvest vegetables and fruits and donate the food to local charities.

Greenheart Canopy walkway, which is located in Asian Garden, makes the garden even more fantastic. The 17.5 metre high and 308 metre long walkway helps people enjoy the beauty of nature while walking along the canopy track. Also, the garden provides information for all the plants, which is great for people who want to learn the science of botany at a closer level.

General Write-Up:

Standing on the brink of their fourth straight playoff appearance, the T-Birds saw a double digit lead slip away in the second half to Calgary dropping UBC from the playoff picture as the Dinos vaulted ahead of them into the final post-season position. A veteran laden offensive squad led by running back Chris Cieski struggled to find their groove as they dealt with a transition at quarterback. Opening day starter Doug Goldsby, who fought through an injured knee suffered during training camp, was sidelined after just three games due to a separated shoulder, thrusting rookie Marc McVeigh into the starter’s role.

The 2008 campaign is going to be one of further transition on the offensive side of the ball. UBC returns only 3 starters from last year’s team and will rely on the development of a number of second and third years players and a slew of top recruits to shoulder the offensive burden this year. Returning veterans WR Braden Smith, OL Mike Morris, and running backs Cheng Wei and David Boyd are the foundation of the rebuilding offence.

A large boost should come from this year’s strong offensive recruiting class that has a number of top recruits with the ability to step in right away. At quarterback, BC high school star Billy Greene will have a chance to contest McVeigh for the starter’s role. Greene was a dominant force in BC high school football last year, passing for 2,421 yards and 27 TDs while rushing for another 1,271 yards and 21 scores. His high school teammate Spencer Betts should bolster the receiving core. Also battling for the wide out spots will be Victoria Rebels Chris Schallo and Blaine Kruger. Schallo led the CJFL in receiving yards last year with 996, while Kruger was named a CJFL all-star after hauling in 16 TDs.

On defence, the T-Birds look solid even after losing two of their top starters from last season. Middle linebacker Shea Emry was the sixth overall pick in this year’s CFL draft to the Montreal Alouettes and defensive back CJ Stephenson, who led the team with two interceptions, was in his fifth season last year. The strength of the UBC defensive unit will be its front line. The T-Birds return all their key starters including Canada West All-Star Scott McCuaig who tied the conference record with 11 sacks last year. Joining McCuaig on the front line will be East-West shrine bowl participant Tommy Buchmann, and Graham Best and Sean Ortiz who combined for five sacks in 2007. Canada West all-star halfback Tyler Cordon also returns, as does LB Devin Kavanagh, who finished fourth on the team in tackles with 34.

Quote from head coach:

“Offensively, even though we have a lot of new faces, I think this group has great chemistry and should be able to perform well. The quality and synergy we have on the offensive side of the ball should help us transition this year and as long as our guys are prepared to compete hard and work together everyday, we will be a strong team.”

“I relay like our defence. Top to bottom we have the potential to be as good as anyone in the country. Our D-Line is going to be really good, and will be one of the major strengths of our team.”
