Since these two towers are REALLY tall, i had to lay on the ground. It took so long to capture a good one because people always cross me !!! But it was worth the pain :-)

Piazza del Duomo and the true twin towers, Torri dei Salvucci seen from the Torre Grossa.

The historic part of the city, known as San Gimignano delle belle Torri, was an important point for pilgrimages to Rome via Via Francigena. The patrician families that controlled the city built about 72 house towers (some 50 m high) as a symbol of their power and wealth. Although today there are only 14 such structures, San Gimignano maintains the feudal atmosphere and is much sought after by tourists. The small town contains many works of art dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

An early evening winter view over Lower Manhattan from The Empire State Building, captured in October 2008.

I remember with perfect clarity where, when and how on 11th September 2001. I was watching live news coverage from moments after the North Tower was struck. I was glued to my seat in horror watching the whole thing unfold in near disbelief. There were many surreal moments where I briefly felt that this surely could not be real.

My thoughts are with everyone affected today but are especially with those of the family, friends and colleagues of all first responders on that day - an aspect that was, and always will be, very deeply close to my heart.

Please excuse the quality of the image. I'd just bought my first digital camera and didn't really understand what I was doing with it as opposed to the old film days so, sadly, this is the best shot I have of this view. Hopefully one day I may return to capture the heart of New York with the photographic justice it deserves.

Thank you for your time viewing the image and reading the words. Please also spend some moments to keep all of those who suffered on 9.11 in your thoughts too.

Take care all.

This photograph was taken from the Staten Island Ferry in 1972. It was taken with a Minolta SRT 101 using Kodachrome film.

I post this photo every year as a way to remember the simpler times (we thought) before Sept.11th.

This day for me is, and has been since that auspicious day a time for serious reflection.

After twenty years of wars since then, there has been no resolution and no change other than we have galvanized hatred between Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and most of the Islamic world.

In no way do my thoughts discount or diminish the lives of thousand of innocent people that lost their lives, the family’s that lost mothers fathers and children and the countless first responders that did a heroic effort on that and many following days and years.

When is the appropriate time to ask ourselves what role did the US have in creating so much hatred that would precipitate the events of sept 11th. and what we have done since to find or creat peace?

In our haste to seek revenge and attack Iraq did we make the situation worse?

What will it take to find a different path forward

We still remember, pray for the victims, pray for peace.

Twenty years already.

The city of Cairo was founded in 969 as the royal city of the Fatimid dynasty. In 1092, the vizier Badr al-Jamali had a second wall built around Cairo. Bab Zuweila was the southern gate in this wall. It has twin towers (minarets) which can be accessed via a steep climb. In earlier times they were used to scout for enemy troops in the surrounding countryside, and in modern times, they are hailed for providing one of the best views of Old Cairo.

The structure also has a famous platform. Executions would sometimes take place there, and it was also from this location that the Sultan would stand to watch the beginning of the hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Sometimes the severed heads of criminals would be displayed along the tops of the walls. This was done as recently as 1811, when the severed heads of Mamluks from the Citadel massacre were mounted on spikes here.

The corresponding gate on the northern side of the city was the Bab al-Futuh, which still stands on the northern side of the Muizz street.
