"It's New. . . It's Breath-taking . . . It's Magic. Zenith television with amazing Blaxide Tube." [From the ad copy]
What I find amazing is how far we've come in 75 years. I can't imagine dressing in formal attire, sitting and staring at a porthole-size, black & white picture tube for an evening's entertainment. Then again, you make do with what you have, and what they had was quite amazing in their day.
Television in 1950 wasn’t yet a casual, everyday appliance. It was
expensive, a status symbol, and a piece of furniture as much as a device. Families did gather around it as if attending a performance. The porthole screen wasn’t a limitation—it was a marvel. And the idea of watching a live broadcast in your own home felt almost magical. The ad leans into that – television as a refined, almost ceremonial experience.
By 1950, Zenith had already spent decades cultivating a reputation for engineering quality. They weren’t the biggest manufacturer, but they were widely regarded as one of the best. Zenith sets were known for long-term reliability, and a picture that genuinely did look better than many competitors.
The Blaxide tube mentioned in the ad used a darkened internal coating to reduce internal reflections and improve contrast. In an era when most picture tubes washed out under normal room lighting, Zenith’s “black” tube really did look better in daylight. It wasn’t color, of course—but it was a meaningful leap in picture quality.
While some companies chased flashy features, Zenith tended to adopt new technologies only when they were sure they worked. That made their sets feel “premium” in a way that resonated with buyers who were spending the equivalent of several thousand dollars.
Our Picture Winter prompt a few days ago was "controlled chaos." The problem, for me, is that I've got plenty of chaos in my home. Not much is controlled. This spot, on top of the television, is one of the few where I stay on top of the clutter. I keep kids' artwork up here and other things that are special to us.
But this winter, George has claimed this as HIS spot (can you blame him? The sun shines right there), which means everything gets knocked down every time he jumps up. He'll pick another spot soon though. He always does, and then this spot will go back to normal.
I have a hard time with textures. They often feel to me like I just plopped them on top, so I rarely upload them. But I'm being brave and sharing this one. Textures from Shadowhouse Creations:

I'll add this to Sliders Sunday as played quite for quite a while with the textures and tried some new things, like overlaying the photo on top of one of the textures instead of the other way around. HSS!
Picture Winter Day 13: controlled chaos
Is there room for the Mariokart wheel? Yes. Should you be playing Kirby's Epic Yarn even though you are ostensibly a grown-up with an actual job? Also yes.

This vintage industrial style TV stand was newly made, and resembles old school lockers. We wanted to push it further, and LTO employee Jasper Oudemans--who is also an artist---made a stencil for the piece to yield this great skull (and shading!) effect, as well as other touches to balance it out. So fresh!
Length 150cm, depth 40cm, height 61cm
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - This is vintage up cycling at its very best! This was originally an old dressing table. We removed the mirror, evened up the areas of wood and beautiful wood veneer, and added a piece of smoked glass to the bottom. Presto-changeo! The sexiest vintage TV console ever, all curves and swerves.
Length 135cm, depth 48cm, height 55cm.
This smaller TV stand, which would also serve as an excellent low shelf, is a little overwhelmed by our outdated TV. It is the perfect spot for a truly flat screen and an easily organized set of components whose wires can go behind the scenes with no muss and no fuss. Check the measurements against what you have space for in your home, and then come see it in person--we think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

They called it “Black Magic TV,” a grand title for a little tube that delivered nothing more than shades of gray. But to a country eager to believe, the illusion was everything. And to complete the illusion -- an original Black Magic dress by Sophie of Saks Fifth Avenue.
GONE - Though the white sections are the then-fashionable compressed-wood covered with melamine, the doors and drawer fronts are solid, gorgeous walnut.
We are somewhat at a loss for the words that could convey what this picture could not. Um...[Cheu and Belle gesture encouragingly at console]. This is the coolest piece of furniture ever designed to be associated in any way with a TV.
W180cm, D40cm, H70cm
Our very own beautiful patterned glass cabinet in a venetian style. The attention to detail is second to none, with an abundance of intricate carvings. We absolutely love this one!
This newly made piece has a fabulous, "vintage school-locker" look that we are always on the hunt for. Hidden storage, plus lots of room for accessories and remotes make for a great TV console. But it would also make a great piece in a child's room--it's low to the ground and indestructible, and they can start learning about gangnam style. I mean, "tidy-up time."

GONE - Another of our container series, this console has been handmade to look as if it were constructed from a cut-down shipping container, right down to the numbers and letters you usually see there. Great combo of open and hidden storage; would be perfect in the dining room as a sideboard offering unexpected contrast with a simple wood table. Width 135cm, depth 50cm, height 60cm.
This Venetian style mirror clock is a timeless beauty that never retires. Beautifully etched and hand-cut glass with gorgeous floral designs. This Venetian Alassio Mirror Clock irrevocably provides a romantic inspiration in a variety of ways, from its aesthetic sensitivity, elegant design to the extremely luxurious feel it is able to add to any home décor.
Lovely decorative round Venetian style mirror. The beautifully detailed frame is made from cut and etched glass and features a decorative floral motif. Very in the moment!
The spectacular Venetian Mirror brings a regal flair to any room with its sculpted ornate details. Filled with style and sophistication and based on craftsmanship techniques from Venice, Italy, the Venetian Gemma Mirror is a true work of art!
GONE - Put the flatscreen on the wall, your components on the top, and chuck those annoying, constantly proliferating remotes into the pie-slice drawer at right. Now you have a clean entertainment centre that is worlds cooler than the built-in wakk of boringness your interior designer advocated (sorry interior designers, we love y'all! Come shop here!)
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN--This incredible vintage industrial style TV console is the latest word in interior style. Beautifully handcrafted, with an exceptional finish, in a slightly smaller size perfect for the Singaporean home. 108cm long, 43cm deep, 53cm high
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - Genuine Danish vintage piece--a full credenza on elevated legs that can fit into a Singapore design scheme, especially for space-challenged new homes. Simply perfect! W102cm, D26cm, H60cm
Gorgeous venetian mirror with a very very elegant patterned frame and beautiful etched glass. The attention to detail is amazing and very in the moment!
Here it is. We haven't been holding out on you, we promise. This steampunk TV console is so astoundingly awesome that I am at a loss as to what I could say rather than gesture, mutely, towards the photograph. [Gestures mutely.] No, but, space for components with plenty of room for power cords, storage for DVDs and games, and OH MY GOD THE WHEELS!! [Faints helplessly.] It can really roll, too. Are you badass enough for this? 180cm wide, 41cm deep, 75cm high
A gorgeous rectangular mirror in a venetian style, very elegant and a huge trend at the moment. With etched and carved glass.
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - This elegant, low TV console made from mahogany is a refreshing change from the same-same built-ins one sees in EVERY apartment in Singapore. The flat screen can be mounted on the wall above, and then the top can hold the DVD/Wii/Playstation/etc. Meanwhile DVDs and games can be stored below, out of sight. Simple and different.
Length 140cm, depth 50cm, height 50cm
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN---Elegant vintage industrial-look console table is low, and perfect for a TV console. We had at least one other similar piece which sold right off the concrete outside the store as we were still unloading our container! 130cm wide, 38cm deep, 59cm high, shelf height 17cm
...& relax in our living room. It's still not completely finished since I don't know where to put the musical clock (among other things).
I love how it has a soft glow in the afternoons.
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: This beautiful TV console/cabinet has six cabinets which close perfectly. Amazing style and covered storage. 112 by 42 cm, height 65 cm.
GONE - Beautiful, space-saving and practical--when was the last time you saw all those three together? This lovely low console works well either as shown, or with the flat screen mounted on the wall above it. Made almost entirely of mahogany wood, save for the very back. Quality workmanship.
