"I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverge in a wood, and I

Took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost

I spent the first 12 years of my life living with my Dad, so I never really got a chance to do "girly things", like play around with make-up etc. I only ever owned one barbie, and that didn't last very long because I decided to cut her long hair off thinking it would grow back - big mistake. So rather than dolls, I got bikes and trucks instead... ]

Now I'm making up for lost time. I love self-portraits because, one has a choice of creating different characters, away from the mundane drabs of normal or real life... It's the closest thing to play.

This is me playing with Anita's wig and her disco clothes... Maybe, If I was cool (cause I am a bit nerdy), I would want to look like this...

I found this TV on the side of the road (LOVE it) and I don't know how I got it in my car but I've always wanted to do something with it... :o)

There's Nothing on TV

I bought this very retro looking little orange tv for only 7.50 yesterday!

I think it one of the coolest props I have now

and I'm making plans for another shoot where I can use it!

It was raining all sunday so I had to find something indoors to shoot...

An orange tv for instance ;)

Anyone remember those Test Patterns that used to display on broadcast TV as the channel was signing off for the night? I remember them fondly because at the time it meant I was home at my parents house, warm, safe, and heading to bed after watching some late night classic movie, Johnny Carson, or the original Saturday Night Live.

As opposed to the white background of the typical test pattern I went with a "stained glass" look where a late night street is allowed to show through. I can't think of a better way to "sign off" of Flickr for just a little while.

It's time to finish some summer projects and get ready for a vacation on the Oregon coast but I'll be back later this year with more Charger pics. ;-)

#July4th, Nathan's Famous in Coney Island will hold its annual #hotdog eating contest. This iconic #frankfurter store opened 100 years ago as a small 5-foot long counter selling #hotdogs for a nickel. Nathan and Ida Handwerker, #Polish immigrants, started the business insisting on selling quality specially spiced franks which came in natural casings and freshly fried potatoes. This weekend, this original location will sell an estimated 26,000 hot dogs! Photo and full text on the history of this #storefront appear in our book "New York Nights". This photo really highlights the glorious #vintage #neon signs Nathan's has as it just had finished raining and the glow of the #neon signs are reflected in the puddles on the sidewalk. #WHPilluminate #neonsign #neongeeks #signgeeks #tv_retro #tv_typography #tv_retrotype #trb_ipoft_signs #everything_signage #signcollective #jj_texttypographical #myfeatureshoot #gas_food_lodging

Lanza's Restaurant was established in 1904 by Michele Lanza. a spot for the tv, for now.

Hey, if you're gonna be a clutter disaster, might as welll do it with style, right??

In honor of #memorialday 🇺🇸 yesterday we are posting our photo of the former Navy Yard Cocktail Lounge ⚓️ in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This #divebar was in business from 1907 to 2010. Steve Frankel, who owned the business since 1999, lost his lease when the building was sold to a developer. The #cocktail 🍸lounge originally served the tens of thousands of Brooklyn Navy Yard personnel who worked in the shipbuilding industry, and later catered to the workers in the many industrial businesses and film and television studios, which have rented spaces at the revitalized Navy Yard industrial park. Photo from 2008 appears in our recently published book, "Store Front II- A History Preserved". #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #signgeeks #tv_retro #tv_typography #jj_texttypographical #memorialdayweekend #signcollective #typevstime #jj_doorsandwindows#myfeatureshoot #Mashpics #signofgrime

Guzman Grocery in Brooklyn is a classic New York ‪#‎bodega‬. We love its ‪#‎handpainted‬ ‪#‎signage‬ and colorful array of products in its window displays. There used to be hundreds of old bodegas in many neighborhoods of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and the Lower East Side and Harlem but they have been rapidly disappearing in the face of modernization and ‪#‎gentrification‬. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypographical‬ ‪#‎tv_retro‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎everything_signage‬ ‪#‎signcollective‬ ‪#‎myfeatureshoot‬ ‪#‎reportagespotlight‬ ‪#‎gas_food_lodging‬

my dad's tv from high school.

The London Ambulance Service historic collection includes a number of classic ambulances available for hire at events, and for film and television work. The ambulances have been maintained in their original condition and still have all of the equipment used from when they were in service.

The LDV ambulances, known as Lazers, had a custom-built fibreglass body mounted on a standard LDV chassis and cab. The design provided a more spacious working interior and a petrol 3.5 litre V8 engine to improve the performance. The Lazer had a complex air suspension system for the rear wheels which was designed to give patients a more comfortable ride. The driver could press a button on the dashboard that would lower the rear of the vehicle to assist crews when loading or unloading patients.

In 2003 they started to be replaced with Mercedes Sprinter based ambulances. The Mercedes ambulances had a number of improvements including the addition of a hydraulic tail lift, meaning that patients no longer had to be lifted into the vehicle. One of the most notable differences was that the Mercedes ambulances were of the more visible fluorescent yellow rather than the traditional white.

The Lazer ambulances remained in service until 2011. The last six Lazer ambulances were driven in convoy by a team of volunteers from London to Mongolia where they were donated to a charity. Several of the LDVs are still being used as ambulances in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar nearly fifteen years after they were first used in London. You can read the original blog about the trip to Mongolia here:

The dark sci-fi take on advertising and lookism got its Korean VHS release via the prolific SKC/Warner label. Once pretty common to see at "pre-played movie sales," it's now quite scarce.

This restaurant specializes in ‪#‎cuchifritos‬, a variety of pork-based dishes that are commonly fried. The word cuchifritos literally translates to "fried pig" 🐷This colorful ‪#‎storefront‬ has an equally colorful name "El Coqui" 🐸which is a very small tree frog and the official mascot of ‪#‎PuertoRico‬. We love that they have the little ‪#‎frog‬ on their ‪#‎signage‬ and the great ‪#‎script‬ ‪#‎font‬ they used! ‪#‎jj_texttypographical‬ ‪#‎signcollective‬ ‪#‎tv_retro‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎gas_food_lodging‬ ‪#‎everything_signage‬ ‪#‎reportagespotlight‬ ‪#‎myfeatureshoot‬

Could resist taking a picture of this abandoned store.

The London Ambulance Service historic collection includes a number of classic ambulances available for hire at events, and for film and television work. The ambulances have been maintained in their original condition and still have all of the equipment used from when they were in service.

Designed and built by the coachbuilder Wadham Stringer in Waterlooville, Hampshire, this vehicle was first registered with London Ambulance Service (LAS) on 19th August 1967. This type was brought in to replace the Morris LD Wandsworth, a design unique to the capital and produced in the London County Council’s workshops between 1958 and 1966.

The London Ambulance Service operated about 215 of these vehicles between 1965 and 1978.

Unlike its predecessor, the Wandsworth, they also served in different ambulance services across the UK. Although it used the same Morris LD chassis it was a little more refined with fully opening windows, better controls and a connecting door between the driver’s cab at the front and the patient’s compartment at the rear.

One of the major improvements was the use of a removable ‘trolley bed’ type stretcher on wheels. Previously all patients had to be carried on either a chair or a stretcher made of wooden poles and canvas. Variations of the wheeled trolley bed pioneered on the Morris Wadham have become a standard feature on modern ambulances.

As well as the traditional bell, two tone horns were fitted as standard on this model. The bell was retained in case the ambulance had to respond to an emergency call in the City of London where the use of two tone sirens was forbidden at the time.

Unusually, this was one of only six Wadham Stringer ambulances to be built with a single rear door rather than the standard twin doors.

Mr. Figaro Unisex Hairstyling in Sheepshead Bay was established in 1977 by Jerry May aka Mr. Figaro. Mr. May was born in Russia in 1927 into a family of barbers and not only learned to cut #hair but also to sing #opera at a young age. He told us that he "took the name Mr. Figaro after the original singing #barber from Rossini's 1816 comic opera." We love the #handpainted #signage 💈✂️as well as all of the photos of Mr. Figaro and his customers in the windows.
