Long Beach City College is hosting PhotoFest at several venues during the month of April, 2011.
Friday evening on 01 April, I spent an hour or so at Tuttle Cameras on Atlantic Avenue, learning a few macro studio set-ups. I learned to customize the "channel" settings of my Nikon D90, which allows off-camera communication with my Nikkor SB-600 flash unit.
A plastic bag of water is suspended about 2-feet above a pan of water. A pinhole in the bottom of the bag allows a constant drip of water, about one per second or so. The off-camera flash unit was positioned to bounce off of a large white backdrop just behind water pan.
Once the camera is properly focused on the point of splash, exposure is a matter of timing. I only took a few snaps, just to get the feel of set-up, then another photographer placed their camera on same tripod to capture a few.
Tripod-mounted D90 at ISO 400 with (borrowed) Nikkor 60-mm macro lens, 1/200-sec at f/32, side-mounted SB-600 flash unit, bounced off of white backdrop. Color added post processing.
