Amsterdam - Reguliersbreestraat.

The Tuschinski movie theater was founded during the Roaring Twenties. It is included in the list of Rijksmonuments (national heritage sites) of the Netherlands.

The building was commissioned by businessman Abraham Icek Tuschinski at a cost of circa 4 million guilders. Construction was carried out by architect Hijman Louis de Jong and started in 1919.

The facade blends several architectural styles: Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and the Amsterdam School (Wp).

It was elected the most beautiful cinema in the world by Time Out Magazine in 2021.

Time Out says:

This extraordinary cinema is named after Abraham Tuschinski, Amsterdam's single most illustrious cinematic entrepreneur. Built in 1921 as a 'world theatre palace', the decoration is an arresting clash of rococo, art deco and Jugendstil, which can make it difficult to keep your eyes on the silver screen. This is where glittering premieres usually take place to road-blocking effect.

Such a great opportunity being able to take pictures in an empty Pathé Tuschinski Theatre. Great thanks to the organiser and to the people of this historic cinema in the centre of Amsterdam.

Operated by the Cineac chain of news theatres, this cinema was probably the best of its type. It was located directly opposite the famed Tuschinski Theatre on the narrow Reguliersbreestraat.

It was opened on 18th October 1934. Architect. Jan Duiker.

The morning 7th of February I woke up to see Amsterdam covered in a coat of fresh snow. The snow fell in sudden flurries and gusts and turned the world white and wonderful. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It snowed for the second time this winter in Amsterdam. Because the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius the snow stayed. The real feel temperature was -11 degrees Celsius cause there was a strong wind and drifting snow. It got more than a few centimeters of snow. The best advice is to stay indoors and turn the stove up a bit. Or of course to go outside to take some nice pictures. The snow is a rare highlight in these February dark days, especially when you have small children. It is quite difficult to come up with something fun in these Covid-19 lock-down days. After a while, sitting indoors becomes quite monotonous for such a toddler. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children here in centre of Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen or go sledding. All fun activities that children do in this beautiful snowy world.

Since the first snow had stuck to the ground, the neighborhood has turned out for a carefree winter entertainment. The next days it will keep on snowing. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. Enjoy a thick layer of snow in your own neighborhood. The Munttoren, also known as De Munt, is officially called the Regulierstoren and used to be part of the Regulierspoort. This city gate was one of the three main gates of Amsterdam's medieval fortifications. The tower's nickname refers to the fact that coins were minted in the adjacent guardhouse in the 17th century. The tower got its current name in the Disaster Year 1672, when Amsterdam was temporarily given the right to mint because French troops occupied large parts of the country, and it was not possible to transport silver and gold to other places. The tower is located on the Muntplein. Today it is a busy intersection between Kalverstraat and Reguliersbreestraat, close to the flower market on the Singel. The Tuschinski Theater is located in Reguliersbreestraat. The former Cineac (now a restaurant and club) is also located here. Today, Reguliersbreestraat is an anonymous tourist street but during the lockdown days not many tourist in the centre of Amsterdam.

The beautiful Tuschinski cinema ceiling changes colour - so I thought I'd get two and stick them together 😊

EMA, short for Electrische Museumtramlijn Amsterdam, had it's yearly cityrides in downtown Amsterdam from the 27th to the 30th of December. Running until 5PM it made for an excellent opportunity to photograph old trams during blue hour.

On Friday the 30th of December tram 465 plus it's sidecar 731 can be seen when coming from the Reguliersbreestraat heading for the very crowded Muntplein

Opened in 1921 and the idea of Polish immigrants. One of the most beautiful cinema's in the country.

The theater of Abraham Tuschinski opened its doors in 1921.

Mr. Tuschinski thought that every person had a right to relax.

The Tuschinski Theater made his dream come true and hosted great artists like Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf and Josephine Baker. These days the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam is a cinema..

I just love Amsterdam at night.

Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city, which had a population of 1.36 million on 1 January 2008, comprises the northern part of the Randstad, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Europe, with a population of around 6.7 million.

Its name is derived from Amstellerdam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were formed.

The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in the world, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, Anne Frank House, its red-light district, and its many cannabis coffee shops draw more than 3.66 million international visitors annually.

Tuschinski Theater Amsterdam

The Koninklijk Theater Tuschinski (English: Royal Theater Tuschinski) is a movie theatre in Amsterdam, Netherlands, near Rembrandtplein.

The theater was founded by Abraham Tuschinski, together with his brothers-in-law Hermann Gerschtanowitz and Hermann Ehrlich. Tuschinski at the time already operated four theaters in Rotterdam and wanted to open a theater in Amsterdam of worldclass. Construction started on 18 June 1919, the theater was built in Art Deco, Jugendstil and the Amsterdams School style at a cost of circa ƒ 4 million. Tuschinski wanted to open the theatre with the first theatre organ in the Netherlands; unfortunately Wurlitzer couldn't deliver one in time. Determined to open with an organ Tuschinski travelled to Brussels to acquire an existing one from another cinema. On October 28, 1921, the theatre opened its doors for the first time and on the next day Dutch newspaper Het Vaderland wrote: "We declare before us generously that the wildest expectations have been exceeded and that Mr. Tuschinski has donated a theater to our country, of which are unparalleled."

On 28 October 2021 Femke Halsema, mayor of Amsterdam, announced that King William-Alexander granted the cinema the royal predicate, renaming the complex to Koninklijk Theater Tuschinski (Royal Theater Tuschinski).

The western facade is flanked by two towers. It is decorated with ceramic sculptures and contains several leadlight windows. The facade blends several architectural styles: Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Jugendstil and the Amsterdam School.
