The Hellenistic Antiphellos Theatre in Kaş (Turkey) which is made of limestone.

Baz recommended the theatre for sunset photos, but the sun dipped behind a hill and so not quite the sunset we had hoped for, but in Baz's words there were "no worries, no dramas" as Peter and Jennifer mentioned the next day that they had watched the sunset from the harbour, so we caught it the next night.

Looking at various websites, it is thought the theatre was constructed in the first century BC, and subsequently repaired after an earthquake in 2nd century AD.

It was renovated in 2011 - there are now 26 rows as they used the 27th and 28th rows for repairs as well as newer limestone. It is used for events.

It was quite steep to climb up and there were quite a few people that were enjoying the evening light and taking photos, one lass was reading a book - and I thought what a fantastic place to take spend time reading.

Antiphellos (meaning the land opposite the rocks) was a small settlement, and the port for Phellos, Phellos was a larger Lycian settlement inland - it is said that the theatre is small - but it seats 4,000 people and that is quite large to me!

It is about half a kilometre from the centre of Kaş. It is built into Akropolis Hill.

The theatre is the only one in the area to face the sea.

Some extra information from www.fairlightjones.com/136/explore-cultural-sites-in-turk... "The ancient Lycian Settlement of Phellos was situated in the upper valley of the River Demre and surrounded by arable farm land. The inhabitants decided to build their own harbour rather than using Andriake (where the river meets the sea) which was under the rule of the important town of Myra. The location that they selected was a bay sheltered by a long peninsula, a harbour which later became known as Antiphellos."

Also extra information from www.turkeyhomes.com/blog/post/views-from-antiphellos-thea... "The theater identifies as Hellenistic by three elements: a horseshoe-shaped auditorium, a round orchestra, and a separated scene-building area. "

The plane is named after the Kushimoto village in Wakayama prefecture, Japan where the Turkish crew of the Ertugrul frigate in 1890 were saved, an Ottoman frigate that sank while returning from a goodwill voyage to Japan.

More than 580 sailors lost their lives when the frigate was caught in a typhoon off the coast of Wakayama, and subsequently drifted into a reef and sank. The entire saga became a milestone in historic friendly relations between Turkey and Japan.

The heads of Heracles and an Eagle are just part of the ruins on Mount Nemrut. Mt Nemrut is a 7000 foot high mountain with a first century tomb constructed at its peak. In 62 BCE, King Antiochus I Theos of Commagene, built on the mountain top a tomb-sanctuary flanked by huge statues 8–9-metre high of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian, and Persian gods. The statues are in various stages of decay and dis-repair.

One of the tunnels at the top of a mountain amongst the ruins of the city of Arsemia. The cave temple descends 158 meters through the rock; the steps into the temple are steep and dangerous. The long Greek inscription above the cave describes the founding of Arsemeia. This was the first capital of the Kommagene Kingdom.
