Propulsing a sleek but big ship like the Aqua Helix at 40 knots (=74 km/h) is no mean feat. It takes 4 of these MTU (Motoren und Turbinen Union) 20V 4000 M73 twin turbocharged diesel engines. The output of its 20 cylinders in V configuration is 3,6 MW and their total displacement is 83 litres. At full speed the engine consumes 900 l/hour.
This is number 48 of the World Port Days album.
Another shot from the archives, this time from last years Silverstone Classic and a photo of the Mark Sumpter Porsche GT1 Evolution in action during the GT Legends session.
The 911 GT1 is more Porsche 962 than 911, taking the 962's engine (water-cooled, twin-turbocharged and intercooled, four valve per cylinder flat-six engine) and placing it in the mid-mounted position rather than behind the rear axel, as is more normal for 911 derivatives.
The Evolution model featured revised aerodynamics, including that rather heavy handed rear wing. the changes aided the GT1's overall performance, but the car still failed to complete the 24 hours of Le Mans due to reliability problems.

DMIR 202, 869, 308, and 207 work up Proctor Hill and through the S-curve at MP 2 with limestone loads back in 2007. We're just over 3 years after the Missabe takeover and non-turbocharged consists like this were still hanging on. They would eventually disappear as CN brought in more EMD 645s to replace this older DM&IR power.
I really miss the sight and sound of these engines up Proctor Hill, but on the bright side, 4-packs of EMD 645s still bring this very Minntac limestone train up Proctor Hill in 2020.
The turbocharged howl of 710 prime movers fills the air as a pair of SD70's muscle their train up the grade out of Grainger.
I hadn't been to Mudeford for over a year so recently decided to revisit for sunrise as the forecast was promising for high clouds. As it transpired the cloud cover was fairly light except to the east on the horizon effectively snuffing out my changes of any interest in the sky....or so I thought. As it turned out the irregular broken cloud just where the sun was rising helped diffuse the sun's light a little but not enough to stop the wet rocks on the groyne catching the light. I shot some vertical and horizontal compositions before and after this one but think this is my favourite of the compositions. Not a great sky but I liked the way it caught a bit of colour and balanced the groyne in the opposite diagonal.
A 3 shot bracketed image blended to smooth out the sea a bit as the waves were coming and going. Every so often there was one of those 'turbocharged' waves and nearly lost my footing/tripod even though it looked fairly steady. Not sure how my camera would stand up to a salt water bath! Thanks for viewing.

Honda Civic Type R
The Civic Type R looks like something the devil himself spat on the asphalt, and it goes like a bat out of hell, too. Its exclusive turbocharged four-cylinder makes 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The eager engine always feels alive with a responsive throttle and imperceptible turbo lag. A short-throw six-speed manual is also on hand and the only transmission choice. The Honda's easy clutch action and precise shifter are as perfectly synchronized as a pair of figure skaters. Too bad the triple-pipe, center-exit exhaust isn't as loud as the exterior styling. Sure, its innocuous note is appreciated on long trips, but we want more roar in a car that looks and drives like this one. The Type R is that rare type of car with terrific track ability and amicable road manners. It sticks to the road like bionic Velcro, with steering telepathy that would embarrass Miss Cleo and a chassis seemingly tuned by a Formula 1 engineer. Although its suspension is stiffer than the sporty Honda Civic Si's, the R-rated version is still surprisingly comfortable. It's only slightly impolite on rough roads or over harsh bumps, where the 20-inch wheels and low-profile tires yield loud impacts. The Honda's immense grip was exhibited on our skidpad, where it pulled 1.02 g'sβan impressive feat for any car, let alone one with front-wheel drive. The Type R set the bar even higher with its astonishing emergency-braking distance (70 mph to zero) of 142 feet, which equals that of the $200,000 Acura NSX supercar we tested.
All this adds up to some pretty impressive numbers on the track:
0-100 mph: 11.5 sec
1/4 mile: 13.4 sec @ 108 mph
Top speed (mfr's claim): 169 mph

...not much more I'd care to say describing this scene. One of those very bright but blustery verge-of-winter sunsets you only get in November and December. We are dug in at one of my "super secret locations" (take careful note of the air quotes), in a beautifully serene patch of Northwest Indiana duneland that hasn't been developed. What could I be waiting for? The only thing I wouldn't mind breaking the ever-present silence of the impending winter: the blissful noise of a pair of turbocharged 645s screaming their guts out.

In spring of 1962, Chevrolet committed itself to the sporty image they had created for the Corvair by introducing a convertible version, then offering a high-performance 150 hp (112 kW) turbocharged "Spyder" option for Monza coupes and convertibles, making the Corvair the second production automobile supplied with a turbocharger as a factory option, with the Oldsmobile F-85 Turbo Jetfire having been released earlier in 1962

DMIR 213 heads through the radio-controlled switch at the south end of Proctor Yard with 30 Minntac limestone loads on the morning of July 5, 2008. Things at this time seemed drastically different from when the CN took over the Missabe, four years prior in 2004.
Looking back and seeing all the subsequent changes, maybe not as different as I thought. In 2008, CN still sometimes used 8000hp Proctor Roadswitch sets and a maroon non-turbocharged leader was still possible on Proctor Hill.
If you'd catch a Minntac limestone here in 2019 it would look much different than this 2008 version. Three CN Dash 8s would be the power and they would be bringing all 60+ limestone loads up into Proctor in one cut. No need to head through the switch as it would be yarded in the middle of Proctor Yard, with freight trains only where 213 is heading. The 2019 train would also have "new" CN ore cars in the summer.
More changes are on the way here as CN has been working on putting CTC on Proctor Hill this summer. Signals are up here at Second Street and this will be the first CP down Proctor Hill out of the yard. Never thought I'd ever see CTC down Proctor Hill, but CN seems determined to have CTC on every mainline up here.

What accelerates 0-60 in ~2 seconds, has around 1000hp, and has a price starting at over a lofty 1/2 million? A Ferrari SF90, that's what! Get out your checkbooks, gents!
Not all plug-in hybrids are built for efficiency; some are built for speed. The Ferrari SF90 is one such counterexample, combining a twin-turbo V-8 with a trio of electric motors and a 6.5-kWh battery pack to spit out 986 horsepower in standard trim. The SF90XX models, laser-focused on race-track driving, get an extra 30 horsepowerβas if they needed itβawarding the SF90 lineup entry in the four-digit power club. The massive power output goes to all four wheels with the front tires driven electrically. Double-X versions also have a stripped-down interior and other changes in the pursuit of all-out lap time. The standard SF90 is now available only as a convertible called the Spider, with a luxurious cabin lined in leather and featuring an unconventional screen-and-control layout. The XX can still be had in Stradale coupe form or as a Spider. Whichever version of the SF90 you fancy in your wild imaginings, know that the powertrain, aerodynamics, and chassis wizardry come together to make one of the best mid-engine sports cars in the worldβFerrari or otherwise.
The standard SF90 Spider comes packed with enough amenities to make it a satisfying pick, especially if you plan to keep to the street more than a race track. If you want to give this Ferrari a more customized appearance, you can select from a host of upholstery choices and paint hues. There are several different wheel designs, and the list of available upgrades includes carbon-fiber components, a titanium exhaust, a digital rearview mirror, and brake calipers in a variety of colors. Which one to buy? Thereβs no wrong answer.
With the SF90, power comes from a massively powerful V-8 and three electric motors. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 generates a mighty 769 horsepower on its own, and the trio of electric motors provides an additional 217 horsepower. In the end, the gas/electric powertrain generates a net output of 986 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Upgrading to the SF90 XX unlocks 30 more horsepower for a total of 1016 hp and adds a feature Ferrari calls Extra Boost, which temporarily increases power output to help regain speed when exiting a corner. Power is sent to all four wheels, making this the first mid-engine Ferrari with all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic transmission oversees the proceedings. Different driving modes allow you to tailor the car's handling to suit your preferences. Use the mode selector to dial up EV Only, Hybrid, Performance, or, last but not least, Qualifyβa setting that allows you to fully exploit the car's performance capabilities.

The 16 cylinder, turbocharged Ruston Paxman engine inside 56 105, bursts into life as it is started up at Shrewsbury's Sutton Bridge Junction on Friday 25th November 2016. Behind it is Freightliner's 66 524 which, along with 66 560, had arrived the previous day & were rumoured to be taking over RHTT duties the following week but, this has yet to happen.
On a late summer Saturday afternoon, a westbound train attacks the 3%+ grade on Southern Pacific's Siskiyou Line between Weed and Black Butte, California. This image doesn't begin to convey the intense sensation of watching eight big EMD SD's lug 7,000 tons of train up to the mainline. Attended a Lime Rock Show yesterday, and was mostly disappointed with the subject matter. I'll probably have a few shots to post but one car immediately grabbed my attention and literally stopped me in my tracks. I was clueless as to what it was, but it was a real beauty. And it was until I returned home and did some online research when I found out more about this little gem...like it's 1/2 mullion dollar plus price, among other things. It's a limited production, custom bodied car built by an Italian company, Kimera, and it features the same underpinnings as the original Lancia EVO37, a 500hp+, both supercharged and turbocharged inline 2.1L 4 cylinder powerplant. The following will provide the interested reader with more details:
Following the launch of its original Lancia 037 restomod in 2021, Italian outfit Kimera Automobili has revealed a new limited-run take, inspired by Martini Racingβs iconic Group B racer. Developed in collaboration with two-time World Rally Champion Miki Biasion and Martini, just 37 examples will be produced, with prices expected to exceed the Β£415,000 of its original car.
Kimeraβs EVO37 is not built from one of the few, and very special originals, but built from scratch in a similar construction method with modern materials and techniques. The chassis itself is a bespoke monocoque built from tube steel, with subframes directly welded to it on either side. The steel structure is then clothed in bespoke carbonfibre panels, replacing the original kevlar composite units.
While it features the same underpinnings as the original EVO37, the Martini 7 adopts a new carbonfibre aerodynamics package, applying a new front splitter, side skirts, more aggressive in-built canards and NACA ducts aft of the doors and on the rear haunches. The use of more carbonfibre and carbonkevlar in the Martini 7 is said to drop weight to 1100kg.
Continuing the motorsport theme, the rear has received a complete overhaul, with new carbonfibre air vents framing a transparent engine cover to reveal its rally-inspired power plant. The rear bumper is also now equipped with a quick disconnect mechanism, allowing buyers to display the gearbox casing and ceramic coated exhaust system in all its glory, just like the Group B 037.
As in the homologation car, the forged double wishbone suspension has a long-travel design, with dual Ohlins dampers flanking the separated spring at the rear and a more compact coilover design on the front end.
Like the structure, the engine is also referenced by the original, running a new-build 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine that is both turbo and supercharged. Unlike the original, however, the supercharger will be electrically driven, so as not to bleed power away from the engine itself as all purely mechanical units do.
The engineβs development has been overseen by one of Lanciaβs original powertrain engineers Claudio Lombardi, and thanks to the advances in engine technology is said to produce 542bhp in Martini 7 trim, up 49bhp on the original EVO37. The engine will power the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual, or six-speed sequential transmission, the latter operable via electro-mechanically actuated paddles behind the steering wheel β in-line with its motorsport connection, ratios are shortened in Martini 7-trim.
The overall design remains similar to the original restomod, reworking the Lancia 037βs iconic design with the aid of modern, high-tech carbonfibre manufacturing techniques. Details, like the front and rear lighting, mesh inserts and wheels are also new, the latter being of a much larger 18- and 19-inch staggered design to clear the modern brake package. The Martini 7 receives new wheels inspired by those originally featured on the Delta Evoluzione, created with weight-saving in mind and incorporating the yellow/black carbon-kevlar of Delta group A cars.
Inside, Kimera has opted for a tasteful dry carbonfibre and blue Alcantara theme, with the dials coming with the same orange backlight as the racer. A unique limited-edition plaque, enamel Miki Biasion/Martini dashboard logo and Martini Racing harnesses also feature, with the main control panel labelled exactly how it was in the race car. Being a modern recreation, Kimera has also incorporated a second control panel in the centre console for fine tuning of the ABS and traction control.
A total of 37 Kimera EVO37 Martini 7s will be produced, joining 37 of the original recreation.

The sixth-generation Ford Mustang (S550) is a pony car that was manufactured by Ford from 2014 until 2023. In departure from prior Mustang models, the sixth-generation Mustang included fully independent rear suspension on all models, as well as an optional 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged and direct injected four-cylinder engine. The Mustang was introduced as a 2015 model year vehicle, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Ford Mustang, which was revealed as a 1965 model year vehicle on April 17, 1964.

The Lancia Delta were factory built, 4 wheel drive rally race cars, expensive and very fast. And not unlike NASCAR, to be qualified, a certain number of street versions had to be built in order to be approved. The race versions were 4 cylinder small displacements, and both turbocharged and supercharged, and put out an outrageous about of horsepower. The combined boost from both systems provided both excellent low rpm power and high rpm power throughout it's entire range. The suspensions were optimized for racing and the cars were configured with engines near mid point of the car. And they weren't cheap with prices over $300,000 dollars when new. Today, you likely would see one going for over a million dollars at auction. The one above, or the piece of it, was a street version of the car, one of few produced. I do have full pics of the car, and a few of a race version if the interest level warrants putting them up...let me know

I have gotten to the point where I appreciate the sound of four turbocharged EMD's down on their knees, much more than I did in my youth.
Saturday's Q436 yielded a new trio of SD40-2s, which justified taking a ride up to Charlton to shoot the train coming through CP-57. I don't think I'd been up there since high school, but I'll have to go again soon.
I was a little nervous driving up there, knowing I wouldn't have much loiter time before I had to turn around and head for home...fortunately, I could hear the unmistakable music of turbocharged 645s as soon as I got out of the car.
Sometimes it all just comes together.

Morrison-Knudsen Corp. in Boise, Idaho rebuilt a quartet of worn out GE U25Bs into M-K TE70-4S locomotives. A Sulzer 12ASV four-stroke turbocharged engine, rated at 3240 hp was installed in the modified U25B carbody.
The experiment proved unsuccessful and no additional units were rebuilt. Due to reliability issues, all four were retired in 1987 and scrapped.
Doug managed to catch the class engine, SP 7030 in Ogden, Utah only eight weeks after the rebuild. The lone unit may have been en route to M-K in Boise for repairs and/or modifications.
