The maintance TTY (a Teletype Model 35) (where the technican is standing) was the main means of communicating with the machine and for the machine to print alarms and reports.
Immediately to his right is the Line & Trunk Test panel. This is where individual subscriber lines could be brought up for testing with an analog voltmeter.
To the right of the L&TT panel is the MCC where the major parts of the machine status is displayed. In an emergency when the machine stopped functioning normally certain switches could be operated to force the machine into a specific configuration. Under normal circumstances the machine could automatically reconfigure itself using fault recognition/diagnostic software.
This was part of a set of slides to train air traffic controllers, apparently c. 1980. How things have changed. ASR stands for Automatic Send-Receive, meaning the device is equipped with a paper tape reader-punch. Sorry about the quality -- it was a poor original.

That's where the famous /dev/tty device in each Unix system comes from. A running TTY also demonstrates the physics behind 8N1, which is a term used in serial data transfer.

Here it is installed on my £27 mechanical keyboard.
In #1 ESS this type of TTY was used to enter software updates (Overwrites) via paper tape eventually written to memory cards and could also be used for maintenance purposes.

I realized after I posted this tweet that all of the Internet could Google the product name supplied and then, hey! Know exactly what I'm putting in my hoo-ha when help is not available. (It's not the most awkward thing I've shared with Twitter, but it's up there.) (Pun initially not intended but sure, "up there" is an apt characterization.)
So anyway, this was the Amazon product result. But here's the thing. Why oh why is there an option to buy this item from a third party retailer "used"? And further, how did the retailer's algorithm link this product page with a sponsored link for a "Deluxe TTY Phone"? Is there some deaf communications/ purple vibrators connection of which I am not aware?
Also, if I'm out of my mind right now, I can at least credibly blame it on the pain.

PNK TTY is an acronym of the crude nickname someone once gave this old van: "The Big Pink Titty" (PNK TTY was a possible personalized license plate arrangement). It was named after the giant runaway breast in Woody Allen's movie "Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex". She was a home-made house car (or motor home), a mixture of special construction, the multi-stop body (much like that of a 1947 Ford) on a Willys truck frame, and was powered by a Chevrolet 230 L-6, a 4-speed manual to a Ford 9 incher with 3:50 gears. Originally, she had a Timken differential with 5:38 gears; tractor gears! I used to pull vehicles outta the sand with her, surprising many. Some parts were International; the I-beam front axle and the associated steering box. The horns were from a 1952 Cadillac as well as the steering wheel. We all believed that if she could talk, she'd have a lot of stories to tell!
