Black wildebeest, which is also known as the white-tailed gnu, has a white fluffy tail that resembles a horse’s tail, but as its name suggest, black wildebeest is indeed blackish in color. This mammal is an even-toed ungulate antelope species and is endemic to South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho. Black wildebeests have been trophy hunted for many years and came close to extinction.

The majestic Voortrekker Monument is situated in the northern part of South Africa in the Pretoria (Tshwane) region in a nature reserve.
It is a unique Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting.
The Monument was inaugurated in 1949 and it was designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk.
For the first time the 92-metre frieze of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, one of the largest historical narratives in marble, has been made the subject of a book.
The pictorial narrative of the Boer pioneers who conquered South Africa’s interior during the ‘Great Trek’ (1835-52) represents a crucial period of South Africa’s past. Forming the concept of the frieze both reflected on and contributed to the country’s socio-political debates in the 1930s and 1940s when it was made.

On a warm February day, South Africa welcomed back the now only operational class 15F, No. 3117.
At an open day event, attended by the public and directors of Wonder Steam Trains, No. 3117 - over 240 tons of raw power - was reintroduced to the public, and unveiled with the name 'nKosi'. A very befitting name to a powerful and mighty locomotive.
Following the open day, Stimela Photographic Events had the pleasure of hosting a fully-booked photographic charter with 3117.
Here we see nKosi beneath the Tshwane (Pretoria) night sky.

The Gautrain is a rapid inter-city train system that connects up some of the key points in the Greater Johannesburg/Gauteng/Tshwane conurbation. It connects the old Johannesburg CBD from Park Station, via Rosebank and Sandton (the 'New City') with Pretoria as well as with the OR Tambo International Airport. It's super-comfortable, super-fast and super-clean: it operates to behavior standards associated with Singapore! A 'must ride' for visitors to Gauteng!
On a warm September afternoon, just south-east of South Africa's capital city, Tshwane (Pretoria), North British-built Class 19D No. 3360 - ‘Shaun’ - powers his way up a steep incline on the outskirts of Donkerhoek. The train, bound for Heidelberg, is on its way to the highly anticipated 'Great Train Race.'

A capture of part of the Pretoria Central Business District, taken from the top of the hill at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria. Pretoria is one of South Africa's three Capital Cities, being the site of the Executive branch of government. Cape Town is the Legislative capital, being home to parliament, and Bloemfontein is the Judicial Capital. Pretoria falls into the municipal jurisdictional area known as Tshwane. This is now a northern extension of the Gauteng/Greater Johannesburg 'megalopolis' or mega-conurbation.
Strangely, this was a rather difficult capture. It was an uncommonly hazy day, so capturing detail and definition were compromised. Rather than using a circular polarizing filter, I tried various settings and settled for 1/250 sec, the camera's base ISO of 200 and an aperture of f 18 !! I also raised the menu sharpness to +2 and the highlight and shadows settings to +1 each. It was handheld. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretoria#Union_of_South_Africa and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Tshwane_Metropolitan_Munici...

On a blisteringly hot Saturday morning, just a few kilometres west of South Africa's capital, Tshwane (Pretoria), Wonder Steam Train’s immaculate Class 15F No. 3117 powers an excursion train bound for Irene. Captured here surging out of Hercules, the locomotive showcases its might and elegance as it steams towards the heart of the capital.

Old English tigras (plural), also in part from Old French tigre "tiger" (mid-12c.), both from Latin tigris "tiger," from Greek tigris, possibly from an Iranian source akin to Old Persian tigra- "sharp, pointed," Avestan tighri- "arrow," in reference to its springing on its prey, "but no application of either word, or any derivative, to the tiger is known in Zend." [OED]. Of tiger-like persons from c. 1500. The meaning "shriek or howl at the end of a cheer" is recorded from 1845, American English, and is variously explained. Tiger's-eye "yellowish-brown quartz" is recorded from 1886.
a very good guide, with lots of explanations, in this preserved village,,,, showing the development of house types through the centuries.... and many of these houses are still to be seen today in rural areas... though not all villages are decorated in this fashion...this depend on the location..
In one photo you see the dung prepared for use on the ground...it makes a very good and durable and replaceable covering.
Another posting will show more pics from this visit.

" Kgodwana Ndebele Cultural village is situated near kwamhlang and North bronkorspruit,it is approximately an hour drive from Tshwane and Johannesburg. It was established by the then Kwa-ndebele government in 1987 and officially opened in 1990.
The purpose of the village is to show how the life of the Ama-Ndebele has evolved with time. The village is part of a game reserve and a museum, King Majitjha was instrumental in making sure that the legacy and heritage of the Ama - Ndebele is preserved there. From Ndebele art works to housing ,it can all be found in Kgodwana. The village has been revamped a bit to accomodate more tourism and serves as place of employment for many of the locals.
The village also gives one an opportunity to see Ama - Ndebele way of life through the families who live in the village."
