A Pink Salmon, desperately trying to elude a hungry Black Bear, leaps from the shallow spawning steam only to land on a rock. For all their bulk, bears are agile and quick, and this one is about to clamp down on her meal... but... believe it or not, the salmon did a backflip and escaped! (Unfortunately it flipped behind that out of focus rock in the left foreground, so my next frame wasn't as good.)
My title refers to both of them. The salmon needs to spawn. The bear needs to pack on calories to get through the coming winter. The salmon that don't make it feed not only bears, but eagles, crows, wolves, vultures, gulls, and the forest itself (bears and eagles will carry their catch into the woods to consume, and the leftovers will fertilize the forest floor). This is how a healthy ecosystem should work. Whether the BC coastal ecosystem is healthy enough to maintain itself at this point is anyone's guess...

Having tried this shot earlier in the year, but only managing to bag a DMU, I returned hoping to snap the lunchtime cement and with fingers crossed the sun would play ball.
As luck would have it it did and seen glinting in the winter sunlight Freightliner Shed 66620 accelerates away from Chinley East Junction on the climb to Cowburn Tunnel with the 11.49 Tunstead - West Thurrock (6L89).
In the near foreground is Malcoff Farm, and the hill in shadow about 3 miles distant is Eccles Pike rising to about 360m - itself not a bad vantage point for trains along the Goyt Valley.

We got to Hosgsmead and it’s better to go to Hogwarts quickly before they get the best seats in the carriages.
I think it's Harry, Ron and Hermione and the elf Doby if I'm not mistaken.

I tried to follow Visionheart's instructions here flic.kr/p/27TEwyo when trying to do a MonitorPano for this pano-glitch but ended up just using one photograph for this artwork which I took with an old iPhone by using the PanoSabotage method on my PC monitor of a photo of a mannequin, opening the same photo 3 times and putting them next to each other on my monitor, zooming in and out of them, and going up and down and generally moving around the camera and my arms like a madwoman.
Regardless of whether it's an actual MonitorSabotage or not, I was quite pleased with the effect of the shot I took of my computer monitor, and have heavily recoloured and processed the best parts of it for this triptych artwork. You can see a small copy of the original in the first comment box below.

Attempted HDR with PS. One of my friend asked whether I know how to create HDR with PS. I said I don't know... but later I found out :)

Tried to find a more carefree and uplifting image today.
Take care. All the best.....
Thanks for visiting...
tried this shot in my grass on a rainy day. I was thinking of submitting the shot to the four element theme on Macro Mondays but I thought it was too busy. Water drops on a grass leave, heavily edited in topaz studio to try to create this "artsy" look.

Trying to find public spaces to take skyline shots in Dubai lead to finding Level 43 lounge in Four Points by Sheraton Sheikh Zayed Road.
Buy a drink and take some shots from this open-to-the-sky area. A fairly small lounge so not somewhere where you can setup a tripod so this was handheld.
You can see Burj Khalifa in the background... it doesn't look high due to perspective but is double the height of the other buildings!
Trying to satisfy my need to click the shutter.

With the Delaware Water Gap looming in the background, the crew of Conrail train UPS continues to the Portland Diner to get a bite to eat. I was out with a friend, and we decided to follow UPS when we saw it in Bethlehem. Somewhere along the way, we ran into the late Walter Schopp, who was also following UPS. We caravanned all the way to Portland, and when we completed this shot, Walter, who was a tall, large-framed man that never missed a diner or mom-and-pop restaurant, suggested that we try the diner. He and I both decided on peach pie, and I asked for it to be heated on the grill with a scoop of ice cream. Walter followed my lead, and until the last time that I saw him, he always suggested taking a trip to Portland for pie.
It's really hard for me to try to explain how hard it is to motivate myself to do any photography these days whilst I continue to recover from my knee injury. Recovery has been seriously interrupted by lockdowns and closures of gyms...indeed, I've not even been able to see a physio for over 6 months. With all of that my fitness has suffered considerably and so even short excursions can sometimes feel like I'm hitting the wall at mile 22 of a marathon. Therefore, the thought of making the effort to climb a hill for photography when the conditions are less than ideal...well, it doesn't appeal.
When on the hill, a different fear now presents itself. Fear of another injury. I used to head out without a care in the world really. Sure, I might slip and fall, but I always felt that I was the master of my own destiny, even in those circumstances...but now it is different. My body just failed when I injured my knee, with very little in the way of warning, just a little knee pain like I've had for years anyway. The actual step I took when my tendon snapped was so incredibly innocuous, it's the type of step I've taken thousands, if not millions, of times before...it was just like going down the stairs at home...but in that moment, my tendon chose when I was alone, on a hill, in inclement weather and without a mobile signal, to snap...not at home, going down the stairs. And now, although the injured knee presents no pain, my other one does, so the fear is that that will someday go too, as so often seems to happen with people who rupture one tendon, eventually the other one ruptures too. Add to that a lack of strength in the injured knee, some balancing issues and a tendency to give way without warning...that all adds up to a heck of a lot of nervousness when going off the beaten track.
The day I took this photo was no different in many ways. I was solo. The weather was inclement. There was no-one really around. I did have some extra protection in the form of a satellite transceiver that enables me to send an SOS and I did tell my wife where I was this time. But with boggy conditions underfoot, it still meant my mind wasn't wholly invested in photography until I'd set up my tripod and decided to wait, in the cloud and drizzle, for things to happen. And so I waited...and waited...and waited. About 2 hours later I felt the subtle change in temperature on my neck as the sun tried to break through the misty conditions. Poised with my finger on the shutter just hoping for the mistiness to clear a little to reveal the landscape, the conditions brightened to the left of the scene you see here until not only were the two tress visible, but also the landscape beyond...and low and behold, a rainbow. What resulted was a stitch pano consisting of 7 vertical frames and 160 megapixels of Lake District loveliness. This scene lasted for all of 30 seconds...and then it was gone.
I don't tend to big-up my photography, especially these days. I tend to work behind the scenes, especially for anything from Snowdonia, where I spend most of my time, refining my project and building, what I hope will be, a quality book. However, when I go elsewhere, it is sometimes nice to share what I captured, and I think even I like this one enough to shout about it.
I had heard about a technique quite a while ago and I have been meaning to try it one day, it consists of taking an object, photographing it multiple times all around it and then blending the layers in varying opacity in photoshop.
This is my first attempt - 12 photos taken around this nice little pot of lavender, blended in PS. I've then added some textures to finish the look. The left-hand image is my base image or starting point as a comparison.
The technique can be used on outdoor objects as well like trees, statues, fountains, buildings etc, etc...

Trying out the new camera with some handheld night shots around the tram stop outside Haymarket Railway Station at night, as people were waiting for the next trams.
I tried using different modes, including one meant to be specifically for handheld night shots, but they results were very poor - however shooting in this monochrome mode gave better results (not sharp like a tripod shot, of course, but for freehand at night, not too bad)
