The aim of art is to tidy up one’s inner and outer worlds.
–Agnès Varda, Les glaneurs et la glaneuse
A suitcase’s existence implies a journey into the unknown, and its function is to provide a point of collection for a condensed world. As an artist who is also a collector of objects, I am drawn to the suitcase as a unique,
liminal space between interior and exterior.
The things we collect are a glimpse into the inner workings of our minds—our hopes, memories, choices, and beliefs—yet they exist as a part of daily life and are therefore made invisible. I want to give these small, collected things value and weight. In these Repository (Travel Series) prints, by placing personal, collected objects in unknown locations, one is forced to question that which is taken for granted. Discomfort and confusion occur in the unexpected juxtaposition of familiarity and the unknown, in places without points of reference. My small, collected objects are made monumental, skewing perception of the visual space and placing them outside of time.
I believe, in this modern world where images are primarily digital, fleeting and ephemeral, that the images I create should have some grounding in a real, physical space. I am interested in making images that are not only about personal, physical things, but which are made physical and tangible in themselves.

Travel in the 21st century represents the anti-digital. The information age offers unprecedented access to the world, but try as it might any virtual experience of a place can not quite replicate the full-five-senses immersion in an environment. The drunk stumble home in the rain, filthy toilets, that mysterious fish smell, these are things not communicated through Google Maps street view.
This small painting embodies memories brought to me by a bag that carried me through Poland. Coal towns crawling with soccer hooligans, mushroom farms, and half a house. These are the things that stay with me above cathedrals and museums. Travel is the nitty and the gritty, and the suitcase a lifeline to anywhere that isn’t home.
Center focal point is one of my handmade torched glass beads made using Italian Moretti and Vetrofond glass with hand pulled twisted glass cane. This one of a kind bead is complimented with Swarovski crystals, sterling silver, African opal, Mother of pearl, and amazonite. The adjustable clasp allows the wearable length to be 19 to 22 inches.

Swarovski crystal components, sterling silver and Sheila’s handmade beads form this tiered necklace. All wire work was hand done by Sheila. Adjustable necklace length measures 18” – 22” around the top strand. Glass beads are created in the flame of a torch and fully kiln annealed.
