This week has been a dark shadow, I've had a FB friend pass away by taking her own life. It is so surreal, as was this image that spoke to me so humbly. She was alive and vibrant and colorful, with the light shining on her and she was young and old at the same time... yet... the dark and shrouded shells, spoke to lonely places that no~one knew about...burned out skeletal masses of crisp, dying loneliness and despair ~~~ and here they were, all on the same vine!
The contrast between life and death seems so simple in this earthly image, but so surreal in my heart. Peace and Rest my friend...
Catholic piety has grown up around the legend of a woman who is said to have wiped the face of Jesus with a towel / cloth / veil on his way to the place of execution by crucifixion (Calvary) just outside Jerusalem. The image of His face in blood is said to have been left on the towel / cloth / veil. There is a shrine in Manoppello near Chieti in Italy, where a veil with the face of a suffering man is kept and venerated. Much has been made over the centuries of the fact that the name Veronica can be jumbled up as a quasi-anagram of vera icona or true image
