Goldfinch Head on.

I really love the way the Differential Focus (Bokeh) has worked here with the tones and gentle pastel shades in the background.

Robin on a Headstone in the Howff Graveyard Dundee. He was very used to people, allowing me to get quite close or more accurately coming in very close to me.

Again. I need to quit this stupid habit.

Because Red Grouse spend most of their time among heather you don't often get chance to see their legs and feet. Feathered feet is unusual enough among birds but to have them a completely different colour to the rest of the bird looks like it has put on the wrong trousers. The scientific name of Red Grouse is Lagopus lagopus scoticus, and Lagopus translates as hare-footed, because its feet resemble those of a Mountain Hare, in colour and fluffiness at least. I've pasted a Mountain Hare in winter pelage below in the comments. Birds lose more heat through unfeathered parts, so Red Grouse and Ptarmigan which live year round in cold, mountainous areas, both have feathered legs and toes to reduce heath loss.

Opening September 16th, The Fellowship event explores a world of fantasy and legend with this special, one-time shopping event, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

SOMNIUM is happy to be sponsoring the event with this new release, The Eldar Regalia. An Elven inspired set that includes the robes and trousers. The boots are connected to the trousers and cannot be worn separately. The robe and trousers are 2 separate items.

Although this young Barn Owl is as big as an adult, it is certainly learning the ropes it terms of flight and perching - and hasn't even got close to trying to catch prey. Thankfuly the adults appear to still be bringing it food whilst it tries to work out what is going on.

This yougster is shown flapping around in one of my videos posted earlier in the week.

When birds want to lose altitude quickly they perform a zigzagging motion as if they are on a pendulum swinging from side to side. As they approach the vertical the wings give them no lift and they plummet, but slow down as the pendulum swings the other way, and plummet again as they reach vertical on the other side. You can tell by the difference in the flight feathers on each wing that this bird was on the downward swing. In wildfowl this behaviour is known as "whiffling" though other birds do it too. This White-tailed Eagle on Mull approached our boat really high, but lost altitude rapidly by whiffling, in expectation of being thrown a fish. When birds fly "normally" the feet are tucked in for aerodynamics, but here the eagle was trying to slow down ( as well as lose altitude) so its baggy trousers were out to increase drag.

Lewis Carroll used the term whiffling to describe the movement of the Jabberwocky, but he used the term to describe the rushing or rustling sound as it moved through the forest ("came whiffling through the tulgey wood").

Not sure what this group was doing in the Meadows - musical group, perhaps? - but I was taken with the chap in the middle, with his back to the camera, posing with his exceptionally baggy trousers.

...well that's what it looked like to me anyway!
