PC Stephen Lamb and PC Andrew McCoombes have been awarded the John Egerton Trophy for Bravery at the Chief Constable's Award Ceremony at Hough End on Monday 25 March.
The trophy is awarded annually to GMP officers who perform the most meritorious act of valour during the year. Constable John Egerton, who was just 20 years of age, was tragically killed whilst carrying out his duty in Farnworth on 11 March 1982. The tragic loss of a wonderful young man, who was a courageous and fine officer, prompted a most generous response from people throughout the country. This included students at the Police Training Centre, Bruche, who presented a commemorative cup to the Chief Constable – thereafter to be known as The John Egerton Trophy and is supported by the Police Federation.
This year the trophy goes to PC Stephen Lamb and PC Andrew McCoombes from Wigan who bravely tackled an offender wielding a knife. Here is their story:
Back in October 2018, PC Stephen Lamb and PC Andrew McCoombes were responding to a 999 call of a local shop being robbed. Arriving at the scene the two officers saw the offender climbing out of the shop under the metal shutter carrying a basket full of stolen items.
PC Lamb chased the offender who tried to hide. In an attempt to evade capture the offender attacked PC lamb with a kitchen knife. Despite this, PC Lamb fought to detain the offender until PC McCoombes arrived moments later and assisted in detaining the offender who was still fighting throughout. The offender was successfully handcuffed and arrested, the stolen property, including shop takings, alcohol and cigarettes was recovered.
Both officer received injuries as a result of this struggle, PC lamb was subjected to several knife wounds and PC McCoombes suffered an injured hand. The ferocity of the attack was so violent that the knife had broken in the officer’s vest during the attack. All the injuries, by pure luck, were thankfully not serious.
The offender was subsequently charged and sentenced to eight and a half years for three counts of robbery and grievous bodily harm.
Sgt John Bibby explains that: “It is safe to say that yes, the response by all was fantastic but the response by PC Steve Lamb and PC Andy McCoombes was absolutely outstanding and brave, thankfully the two are not seriously injured and this was more by luck than by design.
“Due to the officer’s actions, a dangerous offender has now been removed from the streets protecting the wider public. All stolen property was recovered and the two female shop assistants who were threatened were able to see that the offender had been captured offering an element of reassurance.
“If not for the brave actions of this officer a prolific offender would still be at large and in a position to threaten more persons with his violent actions. “
By receiving this award the two officers have been put forward for the National Police Bravery Award at the prestigious London Ceremony on 18 July 2019.

Seen here is the superstructure of the Resolute with the tally of its "kills." Home ported in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Resolute was docked in Astoria on the day I photographed it.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Resolute (WMEC-620) returns home on Sunday, May 19th to St. Petersburg following a 60-day patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
Upon getting underway, Resolute patrolled south to the Panama Canal, transiting the 51 mile canal and passing through three separate locks over the course of 10 hours to reach the Gulf of Panama and the Pacific Ocean. After reaching the Pacific, Resolute transitioned to conducting law enforcement operations in support of the Joint Interagency Task Force South counter-drug mission under the tactical command of the 11th Coast Guard District.
Resolute embarked an Aviation Detachment from the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron to assist with counter-drug missions. With the aid of the Aviation Detachment, Resolute interdicted seven suspected drug smuggling vessels, seizing or disrupting over 4,000 kilograms of cocaine, worth an estimated $129 million in street value. Additionally, Resolute detained 23 suspected narcotics traffickers and ensured they received proper care and proper disposition to various agencies. Resolute's cases ranged from high-speed interdictions of go-fast vessels to fishing vessels concealing contraband in hidden compartments. Many of these cases lasted over 20 consecutive hours and some required detailed operational planning and partnership with additional assets, including Canadian Navy and Central American Coast Guard assets.
This patrol was one of Resolute's most successful counterdrug patrols in recent years, and continues the long history of the cutter's operational excellence. Resolute disrupted trans-national criminal organizations through the interdiction and apprehension of seven separate vessels, ensuring more than $130 million dollars of illegal narcotics were seized prior to making it to the United States.
Resolute is a 210-foot Reliance class cutter and has a crew of 78. Resolute was commissioned on December 8, 1966, and has been homeported in San Francisco, California; Astoria, Oregon; and now St. Petersburg, Florida. Resolute has a decorated past including patrols in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, participating in the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, the response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the search and rescue efforts for the El Faro. Recent patrols have focused on the Coast Guard's Law Enforcement missions of drug and migrant interdiction.

A heck of a lot of them! I was at a concert for talented local kids and each one of them seemed to get at least one.
An R2-D2 trophy I won at the LEGO Discovery Center Star Wars themed adults night. I built a Twin Pod Cloud Car. The model is glued (except for his head, which rotates), but that's ok, because I wouldn't want to take it apart anyway.
As commissioner of my fantasy league, I've decided to legitimize it by purchasing a trophy for this upcoming season.
My son's marching band went to their first competition this afternoon. It was great to be able to shoot their marching show in daylight for a change... expect to see lots of band photos over the next week. This big trophy was on the sideline, it was probably four and a half or five feet tall. And, yeah, this is the back of the trophy... it was on the other side of a fence from me, so I couldn't get around in front of it.
The winner's trophy to the Chevy Rock 'n' Roll 400. Nascar has some big trophies. At Martinsville they give out a Grandfather Clock. I think Darrell Waltrip has like 10 of them. The only thing is you can't really hold these.
In case you were wondereing Jimmie Johnson won the race. The 3rd time I got to see him win. Dale Jr's car blew up after he drove all the way to 2nd place.
BRICKS CASCADE is on it's way, and I thought it would be nice to give a bit of recognition to the folks who donate their time and bricks to make the awards for our convention. So I present the trophy for... Best Trophy!
Yes it's silly looking, and way over the top, but that's what I wanted. I love the creativity that being restricted by that 8x1 brick brings to trophy building. It felt right to base the "Trophy Trophy" off of those classic trophy shop, chrome plastic and marble trophies everyone got for Little League, Bowling, Karate, and such.
I also figured this was a great opportunity to let folks know about the convention, which is June 1st-3rd at the Portland Oregon Convention Center, so come on out!!!
