So, so you think you can tell, heaven from hell.
Cuando la tierra, el fuego y la vida se vuelven uno.
July, the 27th, 1,642 AC.
Antrona valley. Italy.
A huge rockslide falls from the summit called Cima di Pozzuoli, destroys more than 40 buildings and kills almost 100 people.
The waters of Rio Troncone, blocked by the debris, fill up this Lake, now named Lago d'Antrona.
The high peak in the background is Punta di Saas, or Laterhorn. The wall of the dam of Cingino Reservoir, built at the beginning of the last century is also visible.

Le acque del Rio Troncone, sbarrate dai detriti, riempiono quello che oggi è noto come Lago d'Antrona.
Antrona Schieranco. Italy
On July 27th of 1,642 A.C. a huge landslide destroyed the village of Antrona, killing 95 people. The debris closed the way of the River Troncone and this lake was born.
Today it is a lovely place to spend a day with your family, an incredible lovely place in the middle of one of the most rugged valley of the Alps, closed by harsh, steep mountains.
At the horizon the skyline of Cresta di Saas.

The parish church of Ss. Pietro e Paolo is located in the capital of the municipality. The original nucleus of the church was built between 1768 and 1780 on a project by Domenico Schiavi and was later frescoed by Antonio Schiavi. The original church with the adjacent bell tower was demolished due to the injuries suffered after the 1976 earthquake.
It was replaced with a building designed by Oliviero Accosano, Eugenio Boranga, Tito De Biasio, and Armando Pinellini. On 6 May 2012 the new bell tower was inaugurated, also using a section of the one from 1906, once called "il biel tor". It hosts a concert of three bells in C3, jammed with a "Friulian" momentum, and were cast by the Grassmayr foundry of Innsbruck (Austria) in 2011. At the base of the bell tower is the old major bell, the work of Giovanni Battista De Poli of Udine (cast in 1933), which was part of the old concert together with two other bells cast by the Clocchiatti foundry of Colugna (UD) in 1976 and currently abandoned.

Just like here in Alberta, lots of angry little birds' chirping, scolding and chattering led me to find this little guy as the source of the disturbance. Only instead of chickadees and nuthatches getting worked up, it was hummingbirds and finches!
Loranco Valley, Valle Antrona. Ossola, Piemonte, Italy.
The hut "Bivacco città di Varese". At the basis of the East ridge of Pizzo Loranco, Mittleruck in German, 3363m. The summit of the peak is visible above.
This hut provides a very useful support for the people that want to climb the East ridge of Loranco, known as "Cresta Lago Maggiore", or the vertical East face, the toughest rock climbing route of this part of the Alps.
The hut is useful also for crossing from Loranco Valley to Troncone valley, across the pass called "Coronette di Camposecco."

I spent the last week in Ixtapa, Mexico. My birding guide was William Mertz. This young man (the bird) was found at Troncones.
Endemic to western Mexico, the Citreoline Trogon is fairly common in arid or semi-arid woodland habitats, mangroves and plantations up to 1,000m.
This trogon builds its nest in cavities in termite nests in trees.
Trogon is a genus of twenty two species in the trogon family, Trogonidae. Its members occur in forests and woodlands of the Americas, ranging from Mexico to northern Argentina.

I spent the first week of December in Ixtapa, Mexico. My birding guide was William Mertz. This parakeet was found at Troncones.
It is also known as the orange-fronted conure and the half-moon conure, and is a medium-sized parrot that is resident from western Mexico to Costa Rica.
Eupsittula is a genus of five species of South and Central American parakeets in the tribe Arini. Until 2013, all the species were believed to belong to the genus Aratinga.
Some of the Eupsittula species are kept in aviculture or as companion parrots, where they are commonly known as conures.

My buddy Wil had pulled over on the roadside for us to check out some parakeets in the trees beside the highway. As I maneuvered into a shooting position a shape caught my eye and when I looked closer I was very happy to find a roosting, very-well-camouflaged Nighthawk...and then as I surveyed the surrounding branches I saw another one, and another, and another...until I counted nine! That was more than my cumulative lifetime count until then :)
I'm going with Lesser rather than Common Nighthawk due to the buffy underparts, but feel free to correct me!

Also known as the Grey Plover.
Their breeding habitat is Arctic islands and coastal areas across the northern coasts of Alaska, Canada, and Russia. They migrate to winter in coastal areas throughout the world. In the New World they winter from southwest British Columbia and Massachusetts south to Argentina and Chile, in the western Old World from Ireland and southwestern Norway south throughout coastal Africa to South Africa, and in the eastern Old World, from southern Japan south throughout coastal southern Asia and Australia, with a few reaching New Zealand. Most of the migrants to Australia are female. It makes regular non-stop transcontinental flights over Asia, Europe, and North America, but is mostly a rare vagrant on the ground in the interior of continents, only landing occasionally if forced down by severe weather, or to feed on the coast-like shores of very large lakes such as the Great Lakes, where it is a common passage migrant.
Pluvialis is a genus of plovers, a group of wading birds comprising four species that breed in the temperate or Arctic Northern Hemisphere (European golden plover, Pacific golden plover, American golden plover and the black-bellied plover) in the family Charadriidae (plovers, dotterels, and lapwings).

The green heron is a small heron of North and Central America. It was long considered conspecific with its sister species the striated heron (Butorides striata), and together they were called "green-backed heron".
Green herons are one of the few species of animal known to use tools. In particular, they commonly use bread crusts, insects, or other items as bait. The bait is dropped onto the surface of a body of water in order to lure fish. When a fish takes the bait, the green heron will then grab and eat the fish.
Butorides is a genus of small herons. It contains three similar species, the green heron or green-backed heron, Butorides virescens, the lava heron (Butorides sundevalli), and the striated heron, Butorides striatus.

The huge Pillar of the old cable lift of Punta Indren, seen from the trail to Mount Cimalegna from Bors valley (at an elevation of 2500m). The man on the left is my Dad (71 years old).
The cable lift that from Alagna Valsesia, 1150m, climbed to Punta Indren, 3260m, was ultimated in 1965, and worked until 2007. The cable lift used two intermediate stations, at 1800m and at 2400m. Those stations were impressive concrete buildings, today they might be called "eco-monsters". The last segment is still in place, with the two horrible stations and this huge pillar. This pillar has a massive stairway inside; in the 60s and in the 70s, during summer, it was possible to ski down from Punta Indren to this place, and the cable lift used to make a stop here to take the skiers back to Punta Indren.
Today Bors valley is full of magnificent free ride routes, Alagna Valsesia is known as "Free-ride paradise" and there is another cable lift, that reaches the same elevation of Punta Indren from another valley.
If you are interested, you can find a movie with original footage of the building of the cable lift on youtube.

The willet is in the foreground and the whimbrel, out of focus behind. The willet is rare in BC and the whimbrel is not common so it is a delight to find them together.
It breeds in Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, down the Rockies to Northern Nevada and winters on the Coast North to the 40th parallel.
The willet (Tringa semipalmata), formerly in the monotypic genus Catoptrophorus as Catoptrophorus semipalmatus, is a large shorebird in the Scolopacidae family. It is a relatively large and robust sandpiper, and is the largest of the species called "shanks" in the genus Tringa.
The willet is still common in some parts of its range despite an apparent decline since the 1960s and it is considered to be a species which is at risk of becoming threatened or endangered without conservation action. The western subspecies is threatened by the conversion of native grasslands and drainage of wetlands for agriculture while the wintering habitat has been degraded locally in California by coastal development. Willets are also vulnerable to being killed by colliding with power lines laid through their wetland breeding areas. The passage of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918 protected the willet from intensive exploitation by hunters for food and allowed its numbers to rebound to present levels. There are a total of 250,000 willets in North America, of which 150,000 were counted from the western flyway, and 90,000 in the eastern. Since the Western willet winters in the east then that means that there are probably much less than 90,000 Eastern willets.

Sunrise on Troncones Beach, Mexico. I don't see sunrise very often, so this was quite a treat. It was fun to finally be able to shoot photos on a beach with mountains like some of my West coast Flickr contacts.
