Built 2010, 2 bdrm, 2.5 bthrm, 1,500sqft
THE NORTH HOUSE was designed as a 3 unit multi-family project w/ expansive rooftop terraces & private courtyards by William Kaven Architecture. Ea. unit contains 2 bdrms & 2.5 bthrms over approx. 1,500sf. & is accessed along a breezeway flanked by lush foliage.
The project was recognized by the City of Portland as being one of the most ecologically advanced projects of its kind when it was completed. In addition to the increased residential capacity for the small site, the project contains passive cooling systems that are serviced by stack ventilation through the open stairwells, trombé walls, hydronic radiant heat, on-demand hot water, on-site disposal of rainwater, impervious asphalt parking along the alley, & extensive use of recycled structural & finish materials.

This is a producing garden, and a trombe wall all in one (assuming I understood correctly). Big solar gain.
One of our instructors pretended to be our client, we were assigned a piece of land, & we had to come up w/ a permaculture design based on the needs/wants of our client. Plus, we each had to pick a specialty, i.e. be an "expect" in a particular field. I choose solar & passive solar.

(passive thermal collector) a sun-facing wall separated from the outdoors by glass & an air space, which absorbs solar energy & releases it selectively towards the interior at night, vents added to the top & bottom of the interior wall, allow heated air to flow via convection into the building interior.
