Huayna Potosí is the closest high mountain to La Paz. Surrounded by high mountains, it is roughly 15 miles due north of the city, which makes this mountain the most popular climb in Bolivia. The normal ascent route is a fairly straightforward glacier climb, with some crevasses and a steep climb to the summit. However, the other side of the mountain -- Huayna Potosí West Face -- is the biggest face in Bolivia. Several difficult snow and ice routes ascend this 1000 meter high face.

Walls around the temple Kalasasaya.

Located near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, Tiwanaku is one of the most important precursors to the Inca Empire. The community grew to urban proportions between the 7th and 9th centuries, becoming an important regional power in the southern Andes. At its peak the city had between 15,000–30,000 inhabitants. While only a small part has been excavated, Tiahuanaco represents the greatest megalithic architectural achievement of pre-Inca South America. Today it is one of the top tourist attractions in Bolivia.

East of the main entrance to Kalasasaya.

The Kalasasaya dates to at least 200 BCE - 200 CE. It is located to the north of the Akapana and west of the Semi-Subterranean Temple, other structures in the complex.

North of the Akapana Pyramid is Kalasasaya, a partially reconstructed 130m-by-120m ritual-platform compound with walls constructed of huge blocks of red sandstone and andesite. The blocks are precisely fitted to form a platform base 3m high. Monolithic uprights flank the massive entrance steps up to the restored portico of the enclosure, beyond which is an interior courtyard and the ruins of priests’ quarters. Note the size of the top stair – a massive single block.

The Monolito Ponce monolith, with his turban (no doubt covering up his deformed cranium), mask, ceremonial vase and walking stick, sits at the center of the first platform. Some say the stick and the vase are symbolic of the dualism of Andean culture (nature versus nurture).

Other stairways lead to secondary platforms, where there are other monoliths including the famous El Fraile (priest).

Early Spaniards believed Yumani’s spring was a fountain of youth and for the Incas the three streams represented their national motto: Ama sua, Ama llulla, Ama khella (Don’t steal, don’t lie and don’t be lazy). Up until 2015, the fountain was a crucial source of water for locals, who came daily to fetch and carry it up the steep trail. Now, most residents have running water.

Taken on my first of three workshops on the magnificent Harris and Lewis this month. I shot this glorious sunset last Sunday while giving advice and guidance to my workshop participants.

This is a fabulous location to capture on camera at sunset if;

a) There's some decent colour in the sky to be had and

b) The wind is manageable and not wanting to throw you off the cliff, ha, ha.

Fortunately, the wind was manageable and I was able to shoot this scene at thirty seconds, which helped to smooth out the water a little. I was particularly interested in the white foamy sections of the water, especially when they surrounded the bases of the stunning sea stacks.

I am on Skye now until next Saturday, as my five night workshop starts on Monday evening followed by two back to back workshops on Harris & Lewis again. What a fantastic month November is shaping up to be.

This was one of many of my images of the dam, the light and the cloud base was constantly shifting, such a beautiful place and well worth a visit, hope you enjoy.

As you approach Pubil and Lubreoch, the glen is increasingly dominated by the massive Lubreoch Dam, whose construction in the 1950s created the five mile long Loch Lyon as part of a wider hydro-electric scheme. The head of Glen Lyon is an intriguing place, with the far end of the loch being only four miles from Bridge. These four Munro's Carn Gorm, Meall Garbh, Carn Mairg and Meall na Aighean are at the farthest end of Loch Lyon

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a 161-year-old tropical garden located at the fringe of Singapore's Orchard Road shopping district. It is one of three gardens, and the only tropical garden, to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Botanic Gardens has been ranked Asia's top park attraction since 2013, by TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards. It was declared the inaugural Garden of the Year, International Garden Tourism Awards in 2012, and received Michelin's three-star rating in 2008.

The Botanic Gardens was founded at its present site in 1859 by an agri-horticultural society. It played a pivotal role in the region's rubber trade boom in the early twentieth century, when its first scientific director Henry Nicholas Ridley, headed research into the plant's cultivation. By perfecting the technique of rubber extraction, still in use today, and promoting its economic value to planters in the region, rubber output expanded rapidly. At its height in the 1920s, the Malayan peninsula cornered half of the global latex production. 31512

Sunrise Over Goscar Rock and Tenby, Pembrokeshire

Yesterday's sunrise over Tenby was absolutely stunning. Finally after twelve days on the road, I experienced a bit of colour and what a bit of colour it was too.

The tide was outgoing with left some part of the beach devoid of footprints bar the odd jogger and dog walker. The colours were stunning and built within a few minutes. Tenby is quite an elevated town and this allows for a wonderful position to photograph the harbour and Goscar Rock on the beach.

I used a Kase 10 Stop ND filter to slow the shutter speed down enough to smooth out the water, which on this occasion worked a treat. The clouds were moving very slowly so they appeared not to be been affected from the thirty second exposure time.

I shall return to Tenby in the future and see what other delights await but for now, I am delighted with how this turned out. I hope that you enjoy it too.

KP5 Aurora Borealis over the 200ft Skogafoss Waterfall, Iceland (midnight Sat 14th Oct 2017)

I have been wanting to capture the aurora over Skogafoss for a couple of years now and last night my dream became a reality.

I took my clients out to one of Iceland's most famous waterfalls around 10pm and for two hours we waited until the show built up into what you see here. The waterfall was lit by two head torches over a 30 second period which allows it to really stand out from the much darker rock and foliage around it.

Every now and then after editing an image I sit back and feel genuinely moved inside. It is not often that an image stops me in my tracks and has me feel quite emotional but for some strange reason, this one has done that to me tonight.

When it happens I'll be the first to admit that it catches me off guard and I am quite unprepared for it. This panoramic image has truly reminded me quite succinctly why I became a landscape photographer in the first place. The view when I was stood there was outstanding and one of the reasons why I fell utterly in love with the Assynt region of Scotland (upper north-west) but having stitched the seven images together and seen it in all its glory, I think it even surpasses what I felt when I was actually stood there.

I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did capturing it on camera.

Today is one of those blurgh full-on, miserable winter days and I am on day eight of my ten day quarantine since returning home from Slovenia. I have not ventured outdoors and shall not until I am permitted to do so but the silver lining to that dark cloud is that I have the time to look back through my tens of thousands of images taken over the last couple of years and this one from my time running my October 2019 workshop in the Italian Dolomites really stood out to me.

So I took my five lovely clients up to the summit of the Seceda, a remarkable 8,200ft mountain range, to capture the mid-morning light. On arriving at the gondola station, we were informed that snow had fallen overnight and that it was sub-zero temperatures on top. So six €32 tickets were purchased and we boarded the large gondola to the mid-way station to board a smaller gondola. The views up there were staggering.

Stepping out from the gondola station onto the freshly fallen snow while the views all around were bathed in lovely light was just magical. Yes, it was a tad chilly but when the clouds rolled in and started to swirl around the peaks, it became very atmospheric.

It was well worth enduring the cold temperatures but on the flip side, we got to enjoy a hot chocolate and lunch in the summit restaurant.

If anyone is interested in joining me this October, I have only two places left.

Here's another 'creative' image that I captured of the wonderfully evocative sounding Canadian Pacific Railway train as it hurtles past me at the junction of Castle Mountain, which features in the background.

I wanted a long exposure of a train but not knowing which wagons were likely to be attached, you really are hoping for the best and some colour to boot. In this respect, I was not to be disappointed as these colourful red and orange wagons helped to create a really colourful image.

Although the main carriages were closer to the front of the engine while bringing up the rear were these empty skeleton frames which help to showcase the gorgeous Castle Mountain behind.

The tricky bit in composing the shot was trying to ensure that the mount was visible above the train as it passed by and to this end, I just about got that right. The other issue that I encountered although I did get away with it, is the fierce draft created as the train flies by.

On a long exposure shutter speed, this can unsettle the camera and cause camera shake although due to the highish speed of the train, only a shutter speed of 1.3 seconds was needed to capture the scene. P.s. A decent carbon fibre tripod dug securely into the snow helps tremendously. I used a Benro TMA48CXL.

It is true that the tropics have beautiful sunset conditions. Here I was knee-deep in the warm water. Camera with wide angle lens on the tripod. Some kelp and mangrove stems in the shallow water. A few islands in the back and to top it off some clouds in the sky. Didn't need any more......

Taken on a three-day workshop that I ran last week in Dorset.

Arriving on the beach at Durdle Door in the middle of the afternoon during harsh light and pure blue skies have you stand and look around at what you can capture that might be even remotely interesting and unusual.

Then I spotted this lovely small cave-like indentation in the white chalky cliffs known as Bat's Head. What were the challenges in shooting from this viewpoint I hear you ask? lol.

Well, for starters, there's not much room in there and setting up a tripod is almost impossible. You certainly need a small travel tripod to even have a chance of setting it up. I had a huge tripod with me so I decided to shoot this scene handheld and furthermore I only needed to capture the scene once despite harsh contrast and a crazy depth of field issue. Saying that my Canon EOS R coped impeccably with the stabilisation of the image, the great depth of field leaving everything sharp to look at, from the rim of the cave to Durdle Door itself as well as the dynamic range coping with the varying degree of light.

The more I use the Canon EOS R, the more impressed I am with it.

Researchers think that Lake Titicaca was coming to this base, which was a port to carry all these huge and heavy rocks.

The Tiwanaku civilization and the use of these temples appears to some to have peaked from AD 700 to 1000, by which point the temples and surrounding area may have been home to some 400,000 people. An extensive infrastructure had been developed, including a complex irrigation system that extended more than 30 square miles (80 km2) to support cultivation of potatoes, quinoa, corn and other various crops. At its peak the Tiwanaku culture dominated the entire Lake Titicaca basin as well as portions of Bolivia and Chile.

This culture seems to have dissolved rather abruptly some time around AD 1000, and researchers are still seeking answers as to why. A likely scenario involves rapid environmental change, possibly involving an extended drought. Unable to produce the massive crop yields necessary for their large population, the Tiwanaku are argued to have scattered into the local mountain ranges, only to disappear shortly thereafter. Puma Punku is thought to have been abandoned before it was finished.

Every year thousands of people venture here, in the Finnich Glen. So many are tourists, drawn by the entry on Google Maps, Tripadvisor, Instagram and by the urge to see where movie scenes from Outlander were filmed. Although the entry on Google Maps is accurately positioned, so many people never find the Devil's Pulpit. That's because most approach from the 'main' car park, which is on the wrong side of the gorge. They need to walk in from the small layby on the A809 just over the bridge over the Carnock Burn and then venture down the steep steps 200 yards into the woods. The way down is pretty challenging, a bit of a scramble, yet still the white trainer and flipflop brigade work their way to the bottom where it is totally otherworldly.

Your eyes are drawn upwards to the moss covered cliffs, the canyon walls, dripping and hanging with vegetation, the trees leaning over 80 feet above, leafless branches fracturing the patch of sky overhead. And you look into the darkness surrounding you in the floor of the gorge where the water runs red, almost blood red in the parts where it flows over the sandstone. it feels creepy and haunted. For salvation your eyes seek out the safety in light which lies up the gorge, through a narrow gap between the rock through to the cathedral nave upstream where stands a domed, carved rock in a pool of light from above: the Devil's Pulpit where it is said the Devil gave his sermon to those down in the hell amongst the washed down detritus of jumbled logs and trees at the bottom of Finnich Glen.

This wonderful and iconic viewpoint of the red boulder that sits within a rock pool and surrounded by sand lies dormant on the beach of Uttakleiv. I have seen this viewpoint time after time and wondered exactly where it lay. Well I have included a screen shot of the location on Google Maps in the comment box below for those interested.

On arriving, we quickly located the boulder and it did actually look like a monster's eyeball and I was surprised as often these things are 'made' to look like something else but it actually does look like an eyeball.

The rocks that line the shoreline nearby are fantastic and well worth spending a couple of hours photographing. Each beach that I have visited in Lofoten has its own features and points of interest and that is what makes Lofoten a joy to visit.

Torpedownia on Babie Dołach

Torpedownia - the Polish common name of the central facility of German torpedo research centers, built in occupied Poland during World War II. Torpedownia was a torpedo assembly hall with equipment for trial shooting, built on the bottom of the basin, a few hundred meters from the shore. Connected to the shore of the pier, which was followed by a narrow-gauge railway transport of torpedo components, eventually mounted in the hall. In the German nomenclature, this building was called Schießstand.

A short citytrip brought us to Dublin - Ireland. A few highlights of that trip were our encounters with Guinness. Here is the famous St. James' Gate. I really tried to tone this image as I think Guinness should be toned. Dark and creamy....

This was taken yesterday afternoon during a two day 1-2-1 with Gareth, a regular client of mine. I love Anglesey and it is a wonderful island full of gems, some revealed and some hidden and this location at Rhoscolyn is a place that I have been wanting to visit for about three years now and yesterday I had the chance to do so so I took Gareth along to see what he would make of it too.

He was not disappointed. Me too. The walk down to the water's edge is erm....let's just say....quite steep on grass (don't go down if wet otherwise you'll slide off the huge grassy slope and into the water and that would be fatal). But we both managed to descend down to the water's edge with lots of care and attention but the effort was so worth it.

The seas were raging, with huge waves crashing against the cliffs and rocks. We stood far enough back to avoid the waves themselves (just) but close enough to really capture the action in full flight. It was so exhilarating and exciting to photograph such a fantastic looking place so full of drama. I will definitely be returning on my next visit.

I hope you all like the photograph and please feel free to SHARE if you wish.

Excerpt from tripadvisor.ca:

This bronze statue of St. Stephen was created by Hungarian sculptor, Alojs Stróbl in 1906 and features St. Stephen as an old king, mounted on a war horse, holding a reign in one hand and a staff in the other. There is a gold ring around his head, indicative of his saintliness, having been canonised in 1083.

Four lions amongst other nice decor can be found surrounding the St. Stephen Statue.

I LOVE coastal scenes, I should do, I was born and bred in Blackpool after all and this location excited me on arriving late in the afternoon a couple of weeks ago.

Fanad Head Lighthouse is surrounded by some magnificent rocks that are so full of detail, colour and texture that trying to decide on a composition were nigh on impossible. In the end, I settled on a low position looking up at the lighthouse with a four portrait panorama stitched in Photoshop CC is the way forward. I could have shot the scene landscape format with a single image at 16mm on a full frame but I would not have quite got all of the rocks in on either side.

The sound of the ocean as it crashed in against the rocks below me felt invigorating and the soft glow of the end of day light gently lit up the rocks just beautifully and delicately. It is wonderful views like these that has me feel like the luckiest man alive in being able to shoot landscapes full time.

This location will feature during my September 2017 based five-day North-West & Giant's Causeway, Ireland Workshop that I will be launching tomorrow (those who have subscribed to my newsletter will be notified first ahead of the general public and those on social media. So if you want to be the first to be notified, simply sigh up at the link below. It's free and only takes thirty seconds).
