This turned out to be my last shot of the Milky Way at the Grand Canyon that I took. When I saw the extra bright shooting star and it explode while taking this 30 second exposure, I figured it could not get any better than this.
One in a trillion shot I think that it also was in the focal point perfectly for this capture.
Needless to say I had a big grin on my face when I returned to our cabin there on the north rim. Ms. Krach as usual was not that impressed ;)

Given the advancement in Lightroom program since I took this capture back in 2015, I wanted to revisit and process with the sky capture feature for masking, and applying the dehaze to bring out more details within the sky and Milky Way.
That meteor was a very bright one to the eye. Once in a trillion shot ... right spot right time.
At times I wish I had had my Sigma 14mm f1/8 lens for this capture, as this was taken with the Canon 17/40mm f/4 lens. Hence this was captured at ISO 8000 and 30 seconds. So the movement in the stars is more than I am used to now versus the Sigma 14mm at f1.8, ISO 6400, and 10 seconds. That lens is a prime and much sharper than the 17mm as well.
But ... at 10 seconds, there is good chance I may have missed the meteor in the sky. So the 30 seconds may have allowed for this capture in the end after all.

Sometimes balmy, sometimes cheery, sometimes stormy, cold and dreary
they continue on regardless in this powerful romance.
With their greetings and farewellings, sadly humans from their dwellings
watching the unfolding of the grandeur on display ...
failed to choose the highest accolade for the dancers in this promenade.
Well, the best that we came up with was quite simply – “Night” and “Day”.

1,000 litres of water pumped every second to keep the polder dry
This was one of the ‘big guns’ used in the battle against water. It is an improved version of earlier drainage mills and uses an Archimedean screw instead of a water wheel, enabling it to transfer around 60,000 litres of water a minute. Over its many decades of service this mill pumped trillions of litres of water from the Oostpolder in Groningen into a lake, the Zuidlaardermeer. At the back of the rotating cap is the fantail, which ensures that the mill turned to face into the wind. The mill’s brake is located inside the cap. This was operated from the outside by means of the rope hanging next to the fantail. In 1939 an electric pumping station took over the work of this mill. The mill was dismantled in 1953 and reconstructed at the museum a few years later.

Object: The Andromeda Galaxy – M31 (Oct. 2018)
(Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224)
The 4th and last time I am doing this target. I was visiting an old friend in Nova Scotia and I needed to come up with a wideband target quickly and M31 won out.
A large spiral galaxy in our “local group” of galaxies named for the mythological princess Andromeda and located in the constellation of the same name. The galaxy is estimated to be 2.5 million light years distant and is estimated to be 220,000 light years across with a halo weighing in at 1.23 trillion solar masses containing over a trillion suns within its boundaries. Interesting to note that while the light from the near side of M31 takes 2.5 million years to reach us, the light from the far side takes 220,000 more years to reach us which is longer than humans have existed on earth.

I've always loved this shot but technically it was not greatly processed back then. I've re-processed this & gave it a bit more punch & vibrancy. It seems obvious: every building has a builder. Nobody would look at this structure and conclude that it evolved through a series of random events, with no intelligent thought behind it.
Scientists estimate that the human body contains about 70 trillion cells. That's a remarkably big number. But what really amazes me, is that every one of those 70 trillion cells contains detailed coded instructions on how to build the whole body. That just screams "DESIGN"!
In his book, the Selfish Gene, Richard Dawkins says of DNA:
This DNA can be regarded as a set of instructions for how to make a body, written in the A, T, C, G, alphabet of the nucleotides. It is as though, in every room of a gigantic building, there was a book-case containing the architect's plans for the entire building.
Dawkins denies that there is a God, yet admits that all living cells contain information (instructions), and even likens it to architect's plans.
If it is self-evident that a building has a builder, how much more obvious is it that all of creation must have a Creator?

M31 the Andromeda galaxy, can be found about 2.5 million light years distant. The galaxy contains 400 billion stars, though some estimates say up to a trillion stars. The galaxy is destined to crash into the milky way in the distant future. Does life exist, most likely it does.
This image, my best yet, is not an accurate representation of the true colour of the galaxy. But I can say the blue colour in the outer spiral arms are regions of young hot blue stars, whilst the orange central core area, is densely packed with much older yellow stars, these cannot be resolved, as they are to far away. The mass of foreground stars across the image all reside in our galaxy, the milky way. The smaller galaxies, at the bottom of the image M110 and M32 just left of centre are both gravitationally tied to the Andromeda Spiral.

What do dog noses have that humans don't? They possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in us. And the part of a dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is about 40 times greater than ours. Dogs also have something called neophilia, which means they are attracted to new and interesting odors.
Dogs possess a sense of smell many times more sensitive than even the most advanced man-made instrument. Powerful enough to detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion—a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. With training, dogs can sniff out bombs and drugs, pursue suspects, and find dead bodies. And more and more, they’re being used experimentally to detect human disease—cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, and now, malaria—from smell alone.
Dogs' noses also function quite differently than our own. When we inhale, we smell and breathe through the same airways within our nose. When dogs inhale, a fold of tissue just inside their nostril helps to separate these two functions.
When we exhale through our nose, we send the spent air out the way it came in, forcing out any incoming odors. When dogs exhale, the spent air exits through the slits in the sides of their noses. The manner in which the exhaled air swirls out actually helps usher new odors into the dog's nose. More importantly, it allows dogs to sniff more or less continuously.
We can't wiggle our nostrils independently. Dogs can. This, along with the fact that the so-called aerodynamic reach of each of their nostrils is smaller than the distance between the nostrils, helps them to determine which nostril an odor arrived in. This aids them in locating the source of smells—we've all seen dogs on an interesting scent weave back and forth across its invisible trail.

Peat, also known as turf, is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter. It is unique to natural areas called peatlands, bogs, mires, moors, or muskegs.
The peatland ecosystem is the most efficient carbon sink on the planet, because peatland plants capture CO2 naturally released from the peat, maintaining an equilibrium. In natural peatlands, the "annual rate of biomass production is greater than the rate of decomposition", but it takes "thousands of years for peatlands to develop the deposits of 1.5 to 2.3 m [4.9 to 7.5 ft], which is the average depth of the boreal [northern] peatlands".
Sphagnum moss, also called peat moss, is one of the most common components in peat, although many other plants can contribute. The biological features of Sphagnum mosses act to create a habitat aiding peat formation, a phenomenon termed 'habitat manipulation'. Soils consisting primarily of peat are known as histosols. Peat forms in wetland conditions, where flooding or stagnant water obstructs the flow of oxygen from the atmosphere, slowing the rate of decomposition.
Peatlands, particularly bogs, are the primary source of peat, although less-common wetlands including fens, pocosins, and peat swamp forests also deposit peat. Landscapes covered in peat are home to specific kinds of plants including Sphagnum moss, ericaceous shrubs, and sedges (see bog for more information on this aspect of peat). Because organic matter accumulates over thousands of years, peat deposits provide records of past vegetation and climate by preserving plant remains, such as pollen. This allows the reconstruction of past environments and study changes in land use.
Peat is harvested as an important source of fuel in certain parts of the world. By volume, there are about 4 trillion cubic metres (5.2 trillion cubic yards) of peat in the world, covering a total of around 2% of the global land area (about 3 million square kilometres or 1.2 million square miles), containing about 8 billion terajoules of energy. Over time, the formation of peat is often the first step in the geological formation of other fossil fuels such as coal, particularly low-grade coal such as lignite.
Depending on the agency, peat is not generally regarded as a renewable source of energy, due to its extraction rate in industrialized countries far exceeding its slow regrowth rate of 1 mm per year, and as it is also reported that peat regrowth takes place only in 30-40% of peatlands. Because of this, the UNFCCC, and another organization affiliated with the United Nations classified peat as a fossil fuel.
