The slide rule, also known colloquially in the United States as a slipstick, is a mechanical analog computer. As graphical analog calculators, slide rules are closely related to nomograms, but the former are used for general calculations, whereas the latter are used for application-specific computations.
The slide rule is used primarily for multiplication and division, and also for functions such as exponents, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry, but typically not for addition or subtraction. Though similar in name and appearance to a standard ruler, the slide rule is not meant to be used for measuring length or drawing straight lines.
Slide rules exist in a diverse range of styles and generally appear in a linear or circular form with a standardized set of markings (scales) essential to performing mathematical computations. Slide rules manufactured for specialized fields such as aviation or finance typically feature additional scales that aid in calculations particular to those fields.
At its simplest, each number to be multiplied is represented by a length on a sliding ruler. As the rulers each have a logarithmic scale, it is possible to align them to read the sum of the logarithms, and hence calculate the product of the two numbers.
The Reverend William Oughtred and others developed the slide rule in the 17th century based on the emerging work on logarithms by John Napier. Before the advent of the electronic calculator, it was the most commonly used calculation tool in science and engineering. The use of slide rules continued to grow through the 1950s and 1960s even as computers were being gradually introduced; but around 1974 the handheld electronic scientific calculator made them largely obsolete and most suppliers left the business.
And this is my landscape and the colours I deal with a large portion of the year. You learn to master the white balance, overcompensate with slight adjustments. Just being behind the lenses is all a person need to escape from any pressing obligations. All you see and focus on is whatever in front of your eyes. I like the action of scouting and taking photos more than the actual development of a picture - processing & organizing & posting on occasions. Sharing and selling are not on table right now. True, Sometimes I'm curious to see the final product, but it's not the goal, it is the journey that counts.
The creations of whiteouts - wind, snow and barren fields/open spaces, might lead you to places you haven't intended to be in the first place - you might become disoriented for a bit if it's a too long a stretch. You learn to compensate, drive according to conditions. But even when you're lost you're found. All you need is your core, and it doesn't matter where you are, eventually you'll find a way. Your way. Capish? Nah. I'm just blabbering into the howling wind. You can do that when you're lost, no one will know it's you. The freedom eh?

September 2015’s blood moon eclipse rising over Mount Shuksan in Washington State, shot on a rented 80-400mm. This is a composite of two images – one to capture the foreground while there was still enough light and another for the moon as it rose above the mountain about 20 minutes later. This shoot was planned out in advance with the amazing Photo Pills app and a bit of trigonometry. I'd be happy to share the spreadsheet for anyone who is interested.
I'm about 30% into a much more ambitious composite of the lunar eclipse. Stay tuned.
The Golden Triangle shoves its train towards the Columbus Modified Fiber Plant east of Artesia, Mississippi on former GM&O rails. Power for the train is the railroad's sole MP15AC and one of two ex-Chehalis Western GP38-2s moved to the GTRA by Weyerhaeuser.
Zodiacal light and the winter band of the Milky Way creates an almost perfect right triangle over this desert ghost town.
A few things to point out in this vertical panorama, is the obvious beam of light on the left of the frame known as Zodiacal light. The reddish smudge (upper mid left) is the California Nebula, and peeking out from behind the jail is the Andromeda Galaxy. You can also see a couple of the other buildings still standing near the base of the mountain.

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. Table Mountain National Park is the most visited national park in South Africa, attracting 4.2 million people every year for various activities. The mountain has 8,200 plant species, of which around 80% are fynbos, meaning fine bush. It forms part of the Table Mountain National Park, and part of the lands formerly ranged by Khoe-speaking clans, such as the !Uriǁʼaes. It is home to a large array of mostly endemic fauna and flora. Its top elevates about 1.000 m above the surrounding city, making the popular hike upwards on a large variety of different, often steep and rocky pathways a serious mountain tour which requires fitness, preparation and hiking equipment.
The main feature of Table Mountain is the level plateau approximately three kilometres from side to side, edged by steep cliffs. The plateau, flanked by Devil's Peak to the east and by Lion's Head to the west, forms a dramatic backdrop to Cape Town. This broad sweep of mountainous heights, together with Signal Hill, forms the natural amphitheatre of the City Bowl and Table Bay harbour. The highest point on Table Mountain is towards the eastern end of the plateau and is marked by Maclear's Beacon, a stone cairn built in 1865 by Sir Thomas Maclear for trigonometrical survey. It is 1,086 metres above sea level, and about 19 metres higher than the cable station at the western end of the plateau.
The cliffs of the main plateau are split by Platteklip Gorge ("Flat Stone Gorge"), which provides an easy and direct ascent to the summit and was the route taken by António de Saldanha on the first recorded ascent of the mountain in 1503.
The flat top of the mountain is often covered by orographic clouds, formed when a southeasterly wind is directed up the mountain's slopes into colder air, where the moisture condenses to form the so-called "table cloth" of cloud. Legend attributes this phenomenon to a smoking contest between the Devil and a local pirate called Van Hunks. When the table cloth is seen, it symbolizes the contest.
Table Mountain is at the northern end of a sandstone mountain range that forms the spine of the Cape Peninsula that terminates approximately 50 kilometres to the south at the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. Immediately to the south of Table Mountain is a rugged "plateau" at a somewhat lower elevation than the Table Mountain Plateau, called the "Back Table". The "Back Table" extends southwards for approximately 6 km to the Constantia Nek-Hout Bay valley. The Atlantic side of the Back Table is known as the Twelve Apostles, which extends from Kloof Nek (the saddle between Table Mountain and Lion's Head) to Hout Bay. The eastern side of this portion of the Peninsula's mountain chain, extending from Devil's Peak, the eastern side of Table Mountain (Erica and Fernwood Buttresses), and the Back Table to Constantia Nek, does not have a single name, as on the western side. It is better known by the names of the conservation areas on its lower slopes: Groote Schuur Estate, Newlands Forest, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cecilia Park, and Constantia Nek.

Since 2019, I've had the idea of photographing a moonbow on Yosemite Falls while a hiker created a light trail up the trail next to it. My first attempt at this shot was canceled by the pandemic, and then the next few years were too dry for good moonbows. This year's record snowpack finally enabled this photo.
I wrote a Python code to predict where and when rainbows and moonbows could be possible. This involved some fun spherical trigonometry and vector math that I hadn't needed in a while. I was worried that I might have made an error and a whole group of people might make a trip based upon my erroneous predictions. Fortunately, my predictions were accurate, the moonbow appeared right on schedule, and it lasted about 20 minutes when viewed from Sentinel Dome.
Jon-Kyle Mohr and I carried six cameras up to Sentinel Dome, across the valley from Yosemite Falls. Griff Joyce and Mark Vierra, of the Half Dome 50/50/50 adventure and the Yosemite lunar eclipse trip, hiked up Yosemite Falls at the right time. An 82% moon illuminated the scene.
Clouds obscured the sky above, blocking the moon, and filled the valley, blocking my view of the falls. Following some desperate prayers, they cleared exactly as the moonbow occurred. The photo was possible after all!
This is the first of several posts I'll make, since I have a number of angles and variations on this photo. I stacked a bunch of 20-second exposures to produce the light trail. A single exposure was used for the moonbow.
The first trigonometrical station was erected in 1936 in Northamptonshire and the last one is the one in the picture. It took its last observation on the 4th of June 1962. It's the Thorny Gale trig point but on the map it's called Limes Head. The brass plate attached to the column commemorated its importance to the mapping history of Britain. In the background can be seen the A66 crossing Stainmore Summit.

It was a stunning predawn up on Te Mata Peak this morning, with the crescent moon rising ahead of the sun.
The triangular structure in shot is a Trig Station, which is used as part of New Zealand's land surveying system.
The three people on the other hand were just admiring the view after walking up the 400m peak.
Drusilla feels confident that she can solve for angle ABC in the given triangle now that she has mastered trigonometry basics.

The position of the rainbow isn't ideal, but for the novelty of catching it from Southside Drive it's a fun variation.
This area was packed with photographers this year, which is very strange, given that moonbows are only visible as the colorful refracted light exits the water drops at 21 degrees off axis from the moon's direction. The colors are separated by fractions of a degree as white light goes from air to water and back to air after two reflections within the water drop. It's not like the rainbow simply exists there, and can be seen from all directions!
So photographers positioning themselves in other places is like shooting a game of pool blindfolded. Sure, you might get lucky from time to time, but you'll waste a lot of time too.
But even a broken clock is right twice a day (as long as it's not digital), so by all means, if you don't want to review the trigonometry (or find a high school student who will do the math for you), take all the "blind pool shots" you want, and see if you can get lucky!

I have a new gig, which is the same as the old gig. The local community college has accepted me as a member of its adjunct faculty to that I can teach a dual credit class at my school. In short, the students that I have in our honors precalculus can now earn credit in College Algebra and College Trigonometry while in high school.
I could claim to have planned this shot weeks in advance, but that's not the case! A friend of mine sent me a message on Facebook earlier asking for moonrise times and rough position for her location, a little to the south of Vancouver, and then casually asked if it would line up with Mount Baker.
My first thought was 'yeah, right!' -- while it would obviously line up with Mount Baker from somewhere, the chances of it lining up close to home seemed pretty optimistic, but it was but the work of a moment to check, and discover that while it didn't, it was surprisingly close!
The next few minutes put my trigonometry to the test, as I worked out the distance to Mount Baker from the Vancouver area (about 95km), the height of the mountain (3,286 metres), and from that, how far it would be above the horizon (almost exactly 2 degrees). I knew the diameter of the moon was roughly 0.5 degrees.
I was then able to plug that into The Photographers Ephemeris and figure out the path where the moon would line up with Mount Baker when it was 2.25 degrees above the horizon, and discovered that the Boundary Bay Dyke Trail would provide me access to the exact spot I needed!
As the afternoon drew on, the haze increased more and more. My friend decided the conditions didn't look promising enough, but I knew that I'd regret more not going and finding out it was good, than I would if I went and got nothing. Plus, how else was I going to validate my calculations?!
Arriving about 15 minutes before the calculated time, and surrounded by a swarm of flying creatures ranging in size from midges to dragonflies, I was pleased that I could at least see Mount Baker, although I could certainly have wished for less haze. Setting up my camera and tripod on some very boggy ground, I wondered if the moon would be visible through the haze, or if it would need to get higher to be seen. You can imagine my delight as, right on time, the moon began to rise behind the mountain! Taken right as the sun set, the last rays were still lighting up the top of the mountain, giving it a pink glow.
This is a single exposure, taken at ISO 100, f/11, for 0.2 seconds, using my 300mm lens and 1.4x teleconverter for a total focal length of 420mm.

I always wondered about the dreadful Sin, Cos and Tan of Trigonometry and how I never used them all my life. It was only after I started trekking high mountains did I realise that Trigonometry came into big powerplay when the height and distances of these peaks were to be assessed.
Not that I have fallen in love with the Migraine inducing Trigo!

The main peak of Kanchenjunga is the second highest mountain in Nepal after Mount Everest. Three of the five peaks – Main, Central and South – are on the border between North Sikkim and Nepal.Two peaks are in the Taplejung District, Nepal.
Until 1852, Kanchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest. Allowing for further verification of all calculations, it was officially announced in 1856 that Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain
