What a treat it was to find this beautiful 1957 Chevy convertible parked in front of one of the historic Henry Gruene Family Home, now the Gruene Mansion Inn. The Eastlake Victorian-style mansion that was constructed in 1878. It is a contributing property within the Gruene Historic District listed in the NRHP.
Situated on the Guadalupe River in the fast-growing community of New Braunfels, Gruene (a German surname, pronounced "Green") is a former German town in Comal County. Once a significant cotton-producing community along the Guadalupe River, the town has now shifted its economy to one supported primarily by tourism. Today Gruene is a district within the city limits of New Braunfels, and much of the former town was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1975. Gruene is known for its German-Texan heritage and architecture.
New Braunfels is the seat of Comal County and has a 2020 census population of 90,403. A suburb just north of San Antonio, and part of the Greater San Antonio metropolitan area, New Braunfels was the third-fastest-growing city in the United States from 2010-2020.
A fellow photographer and friend from the UK wanted to learn more about masking in Photoshop, and Zoom to the rescue. I started with one of my shots that never thrilled me, but thought it was a good simple shot to start with. As far as the dime a dozen shots of '55 Chevys go, IMO, it was just OK, and it's color was not my favorite. Kind of a peach color, ergo the title. I showed him the power of the new Object Selection tool in Photoshop, and if any further cleanup is required a few other tools can be used. However, typically I use the Polygonal tool for that. I went on to tell him that if you are selecting the subject (car here) but want to do something with the rest of the image, (the background) and not the subject, you must click Inverse before doing any of that. I told him that if you are going to spray out the background like above, you can pick any color you want, but a color already in the image usually works well, or as in the case here, a complimentary color. Maybe a bit of a stretch here, and being that the cars color is in the red family, the compliment of red is green, and therefore my reasoning for going with a shade of green. So, as I'm working my way through this demo process with him my original feelings about not liking the image started to change, and I actually kind of like it now. I think it's proof as to how, with a little extra play, you can turn a mediocre image into something a little more special. So, the takeaway here is don't throw in the towel on those "so so" images, there just may be hope for them.

An instantly recognised classic! - The 1957 Chevy Bel Air Sport Coupe. I am a big fan of Tri-Chevys, so decided to include three photos here. Registration: “PSU 407”, imported to the UK in 1988. Mildly customised W/ aftermarket wheels, fuel injection badges, retrofit 305-CID V8. The owner was a friendly bloke. Seen at the annual ‘Race The Waves’ hot rod racing event opening/registration/scrutineering pre-race gathering on Church Green, Old Town, Bridlington, Yorkshire, UK, 13/06/25.
A rather solid and complete (apart from the front clip) 1957 Chevrolet station wagon sits in an abandoned garage in the Inland Empire of Southern California.
Rear-quarter nearside view of a beautiful 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 4-Door, 6-Passenger Sedan, model code/ID [2403], one of 264,449 examples built and sold for the 1957 model year. This car - complete with age-related, six-character registration “XSV 179” includes the optional “Turbo-Fire” 283-CID V8 engine and automatic transmission - possibly a “PowerGlide” 2-Spd. The paint has received a retouch, albeit still a period-correct shade of “Surf Green”, W/ Kustom Metal Flake roof. A truly beautiful example which looked even nicer close-up in person. The car has a friendly and enthusiastic owner.
The ‘57 Chevy is a hugely iconic American car, being one of the famous ‘55-‘57 “Tri-Fives”.
