CN’s trial Prairie States local (L544) pulls limestone empties from the Praire States power plant near Lively Grove, IL to interchange with the Kaskaskia Port railroad at Lenzburg. The local was created due to the L548 local crew regularly timing out returning to STL after swapping with L546 at New Athens. L546 work of picking up empties and/or fly ash, running up to Lenzburg to set out and returning with limestone loads seemed to be a bit much. This is the second week of the trial run of L544. Thanks to MH for the info on this new move. Two SD70s lead today's consist, IC deathstar #1028 and CN (IC) #1037.

Site of the Hog Trial in the Hatfield-McCoy feud.

Three historical markers at the site read:

"McCoy Cemetery. Among the graves in the McCoy Cemetery are those of Randolph McCoy's three sons -- Tolbert, Pharmer, and Randolph Jr. -- all killed by the Hatfields. Also buried here are Alifair and Calvin McCoy, who were killed by the Hatfields when cabin was burned. Cemetery is part of the Hatfield-McCoy Feud Historical District."

"Hog Trial. In 1873 Randolph McCoy accused Floyd Hatfield of stealing his hog. A trial followed, presided over by Reverend Anderson Hatfield, justice of the peace. To be fair, the jury consisted of six Hatfields and six McCoys. One witness, William Staton, stated he had seen Floyd mark the hog's ear. This resulted in Floyd's acquittal."

"Hog Trial Site. In the fall of 1878, Randolph McCoy brought charges against Floyd Hatfield for stealing one of his hogs. The resulting trial occurred here and was presided over by the local justice of the peace, Preacher Anderson Hatfield. Preacher Anderson was Devil Anse Hatfield's cousin and did not want to appear biased so he gathered a jury of six Hatfields and six McCoys to hear the case. When the jury reached a verdict, Selkirk McCoy, nephew of Sarah McCoy and a veteran of the Virginia Confederacy, sided with the six Hatfields in favor of Floyd. The McCoys felt betrayed and open hostilities soon erupted between the Hatfield and McCoy families. Later Bill Staton, who testified in favor of his brother-in-law Floyd Hatfield was killed by two of Randolph McCoys nephews while he was hunting. They were tried and acquitted in a trial presided over by Valentine Hatfield, uncle of Devil Anse. After this, violence between the families continued and the resulting conflict eventually escalated into the most famous feud in American history."

Memorial stone at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial in Salem, Massachusetts, to Giles Corey.

Corey was a Puritan who emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony some time before 1664. Already in his 50s, Corey was somewhat wealthy and owned a farm in the southwest corner of Salem Village (now the town of Peabody). He had two natural daughters with his first wife, Margaret. His second marriage, to Mary, ended with her death and no offspring. His third marriage to a "Lady Perkins" also ended with her death and no children. He married a fourth time to Martha, who had son, Thomas. Thomas became Corey's heir. Martha was pious and a dedicated church-goer.

The Salem witch trials began on February 29, 1692, when three young girls (aged, 9, 11, 13, and 17) who had been faking epileptic fits for a month accused Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and a black servant named Tituba of witchcraft. Three other teenage girls soon also begin "having fits" and declare they are being tormented by witches, too.

Martha Corey was outspoken in her belief that the girls were lying, and that a good thrashing would cure their fits. On March 12, the girls accused Martha Corey of being a witch. She was interrogated on March 21. Giles defended his wife's innocence vigorously. On April 13, one of the girls declared that Giles Corey was a warlock; he was arrested on April 18. He was interrogated the following day. Giles plead not guilty. But he refused to acknowledge he court's ability to try him -- which was required of defendants. Nonetheless, he was tossed in jail along with his wife.

Salem's jail cells were barely three feet on a side, and underground. An iron door with a barred window about five feet off the ground was the only view. The accused could sit on a bare wooden bench, and that was all. Defendants had to pay for their own food, water, medical care, and clothing. The Coreys, being wealthy, could afford to do so. Others were not so lucky...

The Coreys lingered in prison until September 1692. In May, a "Court Oyer and Terminer" began sitting in Salem Town, hearing the cases. No one who came before it was found not-guilty. On June 8, it sentenced accused witch Bridget Bishop to death. She hanged two days later. Ten more people were hanged between June and September.

Both Coreys were finally indicted in mid-September. Martha was tried and found guilty.

British law did not allow Giles Corey to get off scot-free. The remedy for refusing to acknowledge the court's jurisdiction was "peine forte et dure". The prisoner was stripped naked and laid face-up in a shallow, narrow trench. A heavy board was laid on his body. A boulder was then laid on the plank of wood. If he did not confess, another rock was added. And another, and another, and another...

This was known as "pressing".

On September 17, Sheriff George Corwin led Giles Corey to a pit in the open field beside the jail. Each of the stones placed on the board required six men to lift it. Not once did Corey cry out, admit jurisdiction, or plead for mercy. On the first day, Corey was permitted to eat three small chunks of bread and no water. On the second day, Corey was permitted three gulps of water, but no bread. Giles was asked three times that day to plead. Each time, Corey replied, "More weight."

More rocks were piled atop him. Corey's eyes bulged from his skull. Sheriff Corwin stood on the pile of rocks several times to look down at Corey, who gasped for breath. When Corey's tongue bulged out of his mouth, Sheriff Corwin stuffed it back in with his cane.

Giles Corey died at noon on Monday, September 19, 1692. His final words were: "More weight."

Since Corey refused to acknowledge the jurisdiction of the court, no indictment could be formally entered against him. Furthermore, the government could not seize his lands and estate. In accordance with his will, all his lands passed into the hands of his loving sons-in-law.

Martha Corey was hanged on September 22.

Martha's death, along with sevenothers on September 22, ended the Salem witchcraft trials. On October 3, Reverend Increase Mather (president of Harvard College) denounced the use of "spectral evidence" in the trials. Nine days later, the Governor of Massachusetts stopped the proceedings. The governor prohibited further arrests on October 29, freed several of the accused, and dissolved the Court of Oyer and Terminer.

In January 1693, a newly constitued Superior Court frees 49 of the remaining accused for lack of evidence. (One would die in jail, unable to pay her fees for her own care.) Five people indicted in September are found guilty and sentenced to death. Three others are indicted, tried, and condemned as well. The governor pardons all of them. Another of the accused was cleared in April, and in May another 11 had charges against them dismissed. Five remained in jail, indicated but untried. They were pardoned by the governor in May.

The Salem witchcraft trials had ended.

What of the many young girls (and boys) who had accused others of witchcraft? Most of them slunk away, never speaking of their role in destroying the lives of countless people. They tried to disappear... Several were known later in life as vicious gossips, cruel slanderers, and all-around nasty people.

Only one confessed her sin. In 1706, Ann Putnam, Jr. stood up in church and confessed deep regret for lying about being tormented by "witches". She asked for the forgiveness of God and her church.

Martha's son, Thomas, sued the colony of Massachusetts -- arguing that his mother had been hanged illegally. He asked for damages, and was awarded £50 on June 29, 1723.

Trials are like fire. How?

Remember that the fire that melts the butter, is the same fire that hardened steel.

Do you melt or hardened by trials?

If we endure opposition and persecution with the right attitude, it can build endurance in us. This will help us to weather future sufferings. We read: “Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you meet with various trials, knowing as you do that this tested quality of your faith works out endurance.” (James 1:2, 3) Similarly, Romans 5:3-5 informs us: “Let us exult while in tribulations, since we know that tribulation produces endurance; endurance, in turn, an approved condition; the approved condition, in turn, hope, and the hope does not lead to disappointment.” So the more we now endure trials because of our Christian course, the better equipped we will be to endure further trials in this wicked system of things.

Cedar, glass, wire

Created in response to an adverse political climate, this sculpture aptly speaks to the opposing views that have engulfed our nation’s daily dialogue. Its “seeing eye” evokes the concepts of god, governance, and the Eye of Providence (the all-seeing eye found on the United States one-dollar bill).

In this commentary on society and government Larimore juxtaposes the rational grid of the wire glass with a cedar tree that represents nature and its unknown, uncontrolled course.

The event was rewarded with 29 riders attending on a range of classic and modern machines. Straightforward sections with just a couple of sections in the trees responsible for my points. Thanks Travis for letting us use your property. Great to see Trevor joining pre-65 on his BSA for the first time.
