An early morning capture of a parent loon on a perfectly still and quiet pond. Except the loon was doing its tremolo call probably because he wasn't happy by my presence. Their chick had hatched just recently and these parents were very skittish. I was far away, on my motionless kayak tucked up against the shore, and the mom and chick were clearly safe (on the other side of the island, behind this parent, and not even visible). Nevertheless, I was being "yelled at". (Same loon family as my recent loon posts.)
Although you can tell the loon is making a sound, I wish the tremolo call could be part of the viewing experience. If you are curious, this site has various loon calls, including the tremolo, click here . Among birds in North America, the loon must have one of the most interesting repertoire of vocalizations.
The red halo of a reflection around the loon comes from the roof of a small cabin on the other side of the pond. A fortunate "planetary alignment" experience. I like how it matches the red eye of the loon. Hit "z" twice for a closeup view.
Most of the Bears love music and they like to hang near the gear. This guitar is my PRS Santana SE. I recently did some work on this guitar where I floated the trem, changed strings, and adjusted my intonation. Guitar players would know what I mean. I have been watching YouTube videos and learning more about guitar set-ups. I am a drummer first but also play guitar. I have two acoustics and 8 electrics.
Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday
I heard this song through all my life. My grandparents played it at home, my parents, and I do from time to time. Mostly when I feel doubtful about something or simply need a boost. And it always works for me. Madame Piaf's voice is so unique and so powerful. It is one of my favorite songs and I do not regret it at all 😘
Je ne regrette rien - Edith Piaf
Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal
Tout ça m'est bien égal
Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
C'est payé, balayé, oublié
Je me fous du passé
Avec mes souvenirs
J'ai allumé le feu
Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs
Je n'ai plus besoin d'eux
Balayé les amours
Avec leurs trémolos
Balayé pour toujours
Je repars à zéro
Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait
Ni le mal
Tout ça m'est bien égal
Non, rien de rien
Non, je ne regrette rien
Car ma vie
Car mes joies
Aujourd'hui
Ça commence avec toi
Common Loons are famous for their eerie, beautiful calls. Among these are the tremolo, a wavering call given when a loon is alarmed or to announce its presence at a lake. The yodel is the male loon’s territorial claim. Each male has his own signature yodel. If a male moves to a different territory, he will change his yodel. The wail is the haunting call that loons give back and forth to figure out each other’s location. Hoots are soft, short calls given to keep in contact with each other. Parents might hoot to a chick, or one mate might hoot to another.

'The Loon Calls Me Out'
The nightly chorus from loon throats,
From lake solitudes that decorate the twilight
In rising and falling ululation.
Where pairs tremolo their duets
That resonate and resound and echo.
For me, this is no wail of sorrow
As it may be for some hearer in grief
It is no dirge of darkness or a’haunting
But it bestirs my core with its longings
For stillness and serenity and the silence
Of a wilderness night pierced only by the echoes
Of created things that raise their voices by instinct.
For me, the silence of nature’s night;
The wind stirring trees, caressing branches,
The tinkling of pebbles at lakes edge, a hooting owl,
The refrains of a frog choir,
And always, always the loon.
Not for me the roar of cities with its barrage of engine thrum,
Strident shouts, sirens and horns
Stabbing the night with uproar, outcry and cacophony
And distant menace
That jar the soul with the din of loneliness.
The wild a place where there are no lies
Or insincerity,
Only the struggle to live another day under the sun.
Let me go where the silence of the night and nature’s songs
Reverberate, if only in my heart.
For, there is no loneliness there.

The morning silence is broken by the tremolo calls of this pair of Common Loons, as the late summer morning sun paints a portrait that rivals the work of the masters.

Ja el sol aguaita per l'ample cel;
ros com la bresca, degota mel
damunt les planes totes florides.
S'embadaleixen les margarides
i alçant la testa ,beuen claror
qui les anima d'un tremolor.
I en les diades de sol ardent,
quan el cel brilla més resplendent,
sembla que llencin crits d'alegria;
--les margarides són flors del dia--
Tenen un riure d'ulls deixondits;
ni el sol que et guaita de l'alta cima;
i, ja m'estima, ja no m'estima,
cauran tes fulles, mesquina flor,
cauran tes fulles, com cau el plor.

The common loon or great northern diver (Gavia immer)
Some morning.in Spring I can hear the loons flying over as they head to and from the ocean or pond- calling as the go.
If you wish here is a link where you can here four of their distinct calls {Wail,hoot tremolo & Yodel}
Whammy..
My favorite guitar has a American standard tremolo that is as reliable as it is pretty. I can push diving the note and slacking the strings till they fall loosely against the pick ups or pull on it making the strings scream to the pint they are going to break; the strings generally stay in tune, which is awesome, especially when you are playing with a group of guys who can hear a sour note amidst a full band.

Twenty five year old Jordan is a military brat.....and I mean that kindly. (A military brat is a child of serving or retired military personnel)
She was born in Cambridge, England and she honed into my English accent right away. She moved back to the US with her family at just 12 months old but she has a love and curiosity of all things British. Her mum is of Irish decent and her Dad is originally from New York. She is bar tender at Bosque brewpub. Amiable and so easy to talk with and I am sure she will soon become more than a stranger when we enjoy the food, her company and a beer at Bosque Brewpub in the future. Thank Jordan for being my girlie #1 in this project for me.
She is my first girl in my 100 strangers project. Thank you Jordan for being my stranger and also for pouring a good pint.
This picture is #40 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at 100 Strangers

The great David Lynch-
I was very happy to get to
meet him in person - after I
interviewed him on the phone
about his album of music,
the great "Crazy Clown Time."
At Soho House in
West Hollywood, there was
a Lynchian listening party
for the album, which I
happily attended, and
was very happy to have
a moment - upstairs from
the proceedings -
to take his photo.
I took three -
he looks almost
exactly the same in each -
perfect stillness.

This is probably too dark?
Sóc un maulet modern i tolerant.
Sóc prou enterc, l'aljub de l'assedegat.
Sóc l'herba verda, la vora de la mar,
un tros de cel i el vermell de l'infern.
Sóc un peó de l’escac de la vida,
una tremolor del nàixer a la por.
Sóc com el so d’aquesta xeremia
i el tabal que anuncia festa i dol.
I sóc mos i sóc carícia
i sóc tendresa i sóc bastó.
Sóc el què sóc, sóc el que sóc.

Here's the great Mr. Carell again, who I like to
call my friend, but strictly in the phony Hollywood sense
of the word, in that he's not truly a friend at all, but someone
we've run into now a few times at our local supermarket. He's a very
kind man, very unassuming, sweet enough to
pose in the middle of a market with my beamish boy,
something a major movie-TV star
doesn't have to do.
