Essential maintenance work is now being carried out on trees across West Oxfordshire following a district wide tree survey.
West Oxfordshire District Council invited Treework Environmental Practice to assess the condition of the 12,000 individual trees and 35 hectares of woodland that fall under its authority.
The survey included plotting, on electronic maps, the position of each tree and details such as species, size and condition to highlight what work was required.
The data captured enables the District Council to proactively manage the trees for amenity purposes. All work identified as being required within a year of the survey is now being carried out by Oxfordshire-based tree surgery company Complete Tree Services.
Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Environment said: “We have a wonderful variety of trees in West Oxfordshire which are vital to our local towns and rural areas from an environmental and aesthetic standpoint. Carrying out a regular survey helps us to improve and enhance their health, safety and quality.”
“Since our first tree survey and subsequent works in 2006 there has been a marked reduction in the number of public liability claims received. We plan to re-survey all the trees on our land every five years.”
Complete Tree Services are currently working at North Leigh Common.

The week before last, we got some work done on our trees. The biggest thing was the removal of six leyland cypresses next to the house. I think the original plan had been to have them grow into a hedge along the fence, but they had been neglected enough that they turned into full-on trees in the meantime and weren't getting any smaller. We were originally just going to get an arborist to work on the plum tree, which had cracked a branch during a recent storm, but both guys that Steve consulted immediately pointed out the cypresses as being problematic.
So here's the tree guy, in the process of cutting down the first of them. I took this from our bedroom window on the second floor, so he was up rather high.

Mark and Mike did a really elegant job. The tree was in a very tight corner between my summerhouse and the fence, and overhanging my neighbours greenhouse and garage. It also had the phone line running through the branches.
I do like the fox ladder that Mark cut into the stump!
For those of you who are curious it cost £600: you get what you pay for with tree care. There are firms who charge much more because they employ a couple of extra lads who mainly stand around, and there are many folk who have a van and a bowsaw who quote far less, from the well known firm of 'Bodge it and Scarper'.
The side of our house, after the removal of the trees along the fence and major pruning of the plum tree. Lots more light there now. We plan put in some planters on each side of the plum tree and figure out replacement trees or other greenery to plant by the fence in the fall.
Here's an update of our most recent work. A great day working in Grindleford, Peak District with Ashley Hall and Simon Martin. Carefully lowing branches which were overhanging a newly renovated property and power lines. Well done chaps!
Evan pretty much spent that day going from window to window, watching the tree guy and hoping for waves from him. This was the scene in Evan's room on the second floor, while the tree guy was pruning the plum tree.
