If I had known this was a job I may have a different career:) the guy swinging from a crane with a chainsaw on his back is cutting down a huge dead oak tree. I'm sad to see any tree cut down but this one was completely dead and in danger of falling.

The old oak could not fight back and is no more.

Here is a selection of pics of the big event. I now need to fertilize the hedge to boost it's growth. I was pleased to get this done before anyone decided to nest in the tall hedge!

A year after our forest fire, the big boys came to do the felling of the hazardous trees. Thanks Mowbrays - www.mowbrays.com

This big suga was the tallest tree on our street and it took the brunt of the flames coming from the east, when a forest fire took our gorgeous mountain landscape away.

HAZARD TREE:

Giant, burnt, dead standing trees can fall and pose a risk to people, pets, vehicles and buildings. It takes about a year for the cellulose inside the tree to start breaking down - and with any decent wind, it can break off and topple.

We had the top half of a large pine tree next door come down in the winds. Luckily, it landed in the open driveway.

You can see the three trees that were being felled here, with a gum at the end of the row which was staying as it hadn't been poisoned like the others. In the foreground left to right are Tim Swain, Nick Kiddey, some reporter from the Otago Daily Times, and David Glenn. Climbing is Simone Montgomery, possibly Michelle Sinclair and Nick Thorns (barely visible). The person in the midground is Chris Brand, and to the left of him (again, barely visible) is Tim Hamilton. The redwood stump and planked timber are beside the drive, the stump was being left high to create a table for picnics, and the timber was to be used to build furniture to surround it. Personally I wouldn't have thought it was much of a place for picnics as one of the locals would be undoubtedly nosing around anyone trying to enjoy themselves, asking what they were doing in Seacliff.

Crooked, half-dead street tree (London Plane?) on Monroe Street NW in Columbia Heights. The orange dot and sign warning of "tree work" indicates it will either be removed, or given a major pruning. I've walked under this tree many times, and it does look like it's going to fall onto the sidewalk during a storm, so I'm glad to see the city is taking action. If it is removed, hopefully it will be replaced with a new tree that will not grow to resemble the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
